Abstract
For an accurate understanding of climate change and tropical cyclone (TC) activities, it is important to use the best track information on various conditions. Moreover, the best track is especially as verification data for prediction model and operational fields. Here, the purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the process of generating best track information so that the basic concept of the best track production can be clearly defined. It also aims at creating a distinguished best track production tool by developing an algorithm which is objectively applicable. Data used in algorithm is real-time data analyzed by a variety of organizations when a TC has occurred and the data is utilized as input data through different stages of data pre-processing. Here, to apply the background concepts of the best track the real-time analysis data is considered as a surrogate of the subjectively analyzed best track, while the weighted average is used for the smooth track and consensus concept. The weight which is calculated for each analysis time (6 hours) and for each track is obtained by the inverse of an objective uncertainty, which represents a degree of deviation from an ideal smooth track which is derived from the 24 hours of the track data. The algorithm developed enables us to offer objective bases as well as to promptly process vast amounts of data. The position difference compared to the published best tracks of 17 TCs is shown to be an average of around 50 km, with no significant variation with the organizations that published the best track. However, for some cases, significant difference as over 100 km appeared among published best tracks as well as at the result of the algorithm. In addition, the uncertainty of objective best tracks produced by algorithm appeared, causing different starting and dissipation point, depending on the number of available data or variability. The result of intensity for MSLP shows a larger gap than what the result of position difference does. It finally urged the needs of additional study. Meanwhile, we certified the performance improvement possibility depending on the reliability and accuracy through rejection of an outlier. We further expect more improved results after enhancing algorithm by complementing data about starting and end point of TC, and conducting supplementary studies.
