Abstract
Art museums are one of the significant places that western modernism has created. Because the art museums and the related systems were introduced in Korea under special circumstance, known as Japanese colonialism, the attributes of its establishment process and the operation methods are very complex. The external appearances of the art museums in Korea built during the modern period (also known as the Japanese colonial period) are similar to the Western or Japanese art museums. But the exhibitions held inside had purposes mostly different to that of Japan’s, and this shows that the ways the Korean and Japanese public accepts the modern art and, furthermore, the modernity itself, are different from each other. The objective of this thesis is 1) to assess the characteristics of the art museums as the modern exhibition space, focusing on the public art museums built in early 20th-century Japan and Joseon, and 2) to appreciate the significance the art museums had in both countries via its main art exhibitions in each museums. This research will also examine the different ways of the visitors of art museums accommodate the modern culture represented as the Western art and what this implies in the present-day. Chapter Ⅰ describes the background and the purpose of this research. This chapter studies the current direction of the existing researches on art museums in Korea and Japan and analyzes four public art museums chosen as the main subjects for this research and the reason for choosing these museums. Chapter Ⅱ takes a look at the background of the birth of art museums after 1900 in course of history. The museums and expositions are the products of modernity. First, the background and the history of the museums and expositions in the 19th-century West and their emergence are examined. With its Datsu-A Ron perspective, Japan’s intention for implanting the instrumentalized museums and expositions to the colonized Joseon is also discussed. It was confirmed that the Japanese Empire had installed these exhibition spaces in Joseon with the imperialistic intentions as Joseon Industrial Exhibition, Museum of Japanese government of Korea, and Joseon Art Exhibition were organized in the order named. Chapter Ⅲ examines the historical process of the separation of art mushes from existing museums in Japan and Joseon and its transformation as the first and modern public art museum of both countries. This chapter describes the establishment background and process of Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, National Museum of Modern Art, Art Museum of Yi royal family (Seokjojeon Hall of Deoksugung Palace, both main and new building), and Art Museum of Japanese government of Korea, and explains the significance of the emergence of public art museums in both countries. The similarities and differences of the external architectural styles and the exhibit hall interiors of the art museums of both countries are compared and evaluated. Chapter Ⅳ illustrates the objectives and the significance of the main exhibitions held at the four art museums mentioned in previous chapter and the impact they had on the art world later on. It then continues on explaining how the art exhibitions had affected the awareness of the ‘audiences’, the people gathered for viewing. This chapter summarizes the physical space of ‘art museum’ and the certain ‘viewing methods’ that takes place inside, and examines the colonialistic elements hidden in those installations. Chapter V reviews the implantation process of the art museum - the symbol of modernity - to the West, Japan, and Joseon. This chapter reminds the process of how ‘art exhibitions’ and ‘viewing’, developed in art museums built in early 20th century, are established as a culture in modern society and describes the significance and limitations of this research.
