This thesis is about my art works attempting to express the world of unconsciousness and illusion where fact and fiction intersect at the boundary point of fact and fiction. In modern society, the boundary between the imaginary and the real is becoming more and more ambiguous due to the development of digital technology. This is a characteristic of the digital society where virtuality and reality overlap each other, which, along with the development of the IT technology, due to the supply of smart phones, the life boundary of online and offline has been blurred, and through social networking systems, it has gone as far as enabling a life of an imaginary world that is different from reality. The ambiguity of the real and the imaginary within digital society can also be shown in various artworks such as fine arts, literature, and films, which imply the fantastic nature that occur as fact and fiction intersect. From this boundary point, I wish to depict a world of fantasy with works of art, and I wish to analyze the unconsciousness and illusion that are reflected in them. Therefore, in this thesis, along with the study of works which project the world of unconsciousness and illusion, I will examine how my fantasy is being depicted into artworks from the boundary point of the real and the imaginary(the cyber space), and fact and fiction(the novel). In the first chapter of the thesis’s body, the Depiction of the Subconsciousness, I will examine works of artists who have dealt with the world of unconsciousness and illusion through various genres such as fine arts, literature and films, and I will analyze how the fantasy revealed in their works are related to my own works. Such diverse attempts of artists which analyzed the unconsciousness and desire of humans will be supported by Sigmund Freud’s theory, and works and phenomenon where the relationship between imitation and the actual become ambiguous will be supported through Jean Baudrillard’s theory. Furthermore, as Oskar Schlemmer had expanded his subject through various media, crossing over genres, I wish to make a comparative analysis with my works on how the subject which I wish to talk about is being expressed and expanded through various media by categorizing into 3 parts: ‘image and text’, ‘objet and usage’, and ‘the participation of viewers’. In the second chapter of the thesis’s body, ‘The Third Space(Analysis of Work)’, based on the theories and works mentioned above, I will examine in concrete how the imaginary kingdom where the world of unconsciousness and illusion is reflected is being depicted into pieces of artworks within my own works. I deal with stories of impersonated objects in an imaginary world, and in order to transform the fictitious story into a fact, I use ‘representation’ of fiction as a part of my work. Through various media, I establish ‘The Third Space’, a surreal world that is like magic, crossing over fact and fiction. In this way, this thesis contains the process of study, which is to get one step closer to the territory of unconsciousness, by conversing endlessly with the impersonated objects while progressing the works. Such process of study was made by crossing over the reality and the imaginary, fact and fiction whilst communicating with viewers through the internet platform where restriction of time and space had disappeared according to entering into the digital society. Through artistic experiment and research activity, I hope to anticipate that the personal fantasy, which began in order to resolve the negative emotions of reality, may go beyond the personal dimension, be sympathized with a large number of people and become a field that can communicate with them.-
