Abstract
This thesis is an analyzed study of Da-Hye Kim's White Heat for solo piano (2015), vacuátus for solo cello(2015), Resonance for piano, flute and bassoon (2015) and Tumultuousness for string quartet (2015). These four pieces were performed Da-Hye Kim's Graduate Recital at Ewha Womans University’s KimYoungui Hall on November 16. 2015. The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the background and analyze the musical characteristics of each work. White Heat for solo piano was inspired by a photograph that is an enormous white light. In three movements, each share an ascending theme that is consistently developed. The first movement, having an A-B-C-A' structure, has two themes. The first theme emphasizes repeating pitches and the second theme is an ascending pattern. These two themes are developed and expanded with the important interval being the perfect 8th. The second movement, a slow movement, with the structure A-A'-B, emphasizes the 9th chord which comes out at the beginning as Bb-(D)-F-A-C and is expanded and reduced. The third movement, a fast movement with the structure A-A'-B-C-D, has both an ascending theme and a descending theme. These two themes represent energy along with the ascending theme being connected with the first movement's ascending theme. vacuátus for solo cello, is inspired by the film, Maison Vide, which means "empty house" in French. This piece is in single movement ternary (A-B-A') structure. Both section A and A' emphasize the Perfect 5th and Major 7th. These two intervals expand to the Minor 6th and Perfect 8th respectively, and are also each reduced to a Diminish 5th and Minor 7th, usually expressed vertically as a double-stop. In comparison, section B emphasizes the triad and 7th chord horizontality. The structure of piece and technique of solo cello learned from Richard Melkonia; Incandescence for solo cello Resonance for piano, flute and bassoon in two movements, was inspired by acoustics, using the piano's sympathetic pedaled resonances. The first movement, with the structure modified sonata form, also significantly emphasized, are the flute's low register through various timbral techniques, such as flutter tonguing, tongue stop, molto vibrato, and pizzicato. These ideas are also continued in the second movement, with the structure Rondo, with the floating rhythms as an important characteristic. Tumultuousness for string quartet in three movements, is a work, that develops with large textures through few pitches. The first movement, a fast movement and in ternary (A-B-A') structure, emphasizes tremolo. The second movement, a slow movement, also in ternary form, has a theme made up of Major 6ths followed by Major 2nds in the first violin. This theme is sometimes inverted and changes interval throughout the second movement. The third movement, a fast movement in A-B-C-A' structure has each part with their own theme. Part A has a disjunct motion theme and contrastively, part B has a conjunct motion theme. Part C has a expanded conjunct motion theme and part A' has all part's elements centre around a element of part A, disjunct motion. By having their own theme, the third movement's part clearly divided. In conclusion, through this thesis, Kim Da-Hye’s compositions are analyzed by structure, motivic characteristic and interval. The elements used for these four pieces are the intervals the Major 7th, Minor 7th and Perfect 5th, various structures, such as Modified Sonata form, Rondo, Ternary form, A-A'-B-C-D and A-B-C-A', etc. Particularly to vacuátus for solo cello and Resonance for piano, flute and bassoon, various timbral techniques are used such as molto vibrato and sul ponticello on cello, flutter tonguing, tongue stop, molto vibrato and pizzicato in flute, in where timbre is a connecting element between themes. These elements, structure, motivic characteristic and interval, used to express composer's idea.;본 논문은 2016년 11월 16일 이화여자대학교 김영의 홀에서 열린 이화여자대학교 일반 대학원 음악학부 작곡과 김다혜의 석사 졸업 작품 발표회에서 연주된 독주 피아노를 위한『백열』(2015), 독주 첼로를 위한『빈,결여된』(2015), 피아노, 플룻, 바순을 위한『울림,공명』(2015), 현악 사중주를 위한『흐트러짐』 (2015)에 관한 연구 논문이다.
