지의류(Lichen)의 조형성을 응용한 패션디자인 연구

Abstract

현대 산업의 발전은 정확하고 빠르게 제품의 대량생산이 가능하게 하였고 수요 이상의 공급이 이루어지는 물질적인 풍요를 가져왔다. 그러나 천편일률적으로 복제되는 대중적 이미지는 인간의 감성적 욕구까지 충족시킬 수는 없었으며 차별화된 개인 감성과 자유에 대한 욕구가 증가하여 수공예 공정이나 고품격의 디자인을 통한 한정 제작의 소비가 증가하는 것이 오늘날의 추세이다. 이렇게 소비자 개개인의 요구가 다양화, 고급화, 개성화되면서 개인적 감수성에 부합하는 독자적인 이미지 구축을 위한 노력이 지속적으로 요구되고 있다. 자연에서 모티프를 심도있게 탐색하고 발견하여 수공예 기법을 적용한 패션디자인은 이러한 요구에 부합하고 감성적 치유의 기회를 제공함과 더불어 개성적 이미지를 구축하는데 적합하다고 여겨진다. 이에 본 연구는 우리와 공존하는 자연의 일부이지만 쉽게 지나치는 지의류라는 존재에 주목하고, 지의류의 조형성을 패션디자인에 응용하고자 한다. 지의류는 그 형태가 매우 다양한데 그 중에서도 둥근 형태의 지의류를 중심으로 적합한 모티프를 선정하고 이를 재구성하여 회화적으로 표현하고자 하였다. 디자인의 표현 방법으로는 양모섬유의 특성을 이용하여 다양한 가공 기법으로 입체적인 질감표현이 가능한 누노펠트 기법을 응용하여 차별되는 수공예 기법의 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 자연을 관찰하여 독특한 생태를 가진 지의류의 조형적 특성을 응용하고 누노펠트 기법을 활용한 패션디자인 작품을 제작함으로써 천연의 감수성과 독특한 아름다움을 지닌 디자인의 가치를 부여하고 패션디자인의 표현 영역을 확대하는데 있다. 본 연구의 내용 및 방법으로 모티프 소스인 지의류에 관한 문헌 고찰을 통해 지의류의 정의 및 조형적 특성을 알아보고 작품에 적용한 사례를 분석하여 그 특징에 대해 알아보았다. 그리고 지의류의 조형미를 입체적 질감을 부여하면서 회화적으로 표현하는데 적합하다고 생각되는 누노펠트 기법에 관한 정의와 특성, 응용 기법을 문헌을 통해 탐구하고 누노패션 기법이 응용된 현대 패션 디자인 사례를 수집하여 분석하였다. 이상의 이론적 연구와 분석은 단행본, 학회지, 패션 정기 간행물 및 인터넷 서치를 통해 이루어졌으며, 이를 토대로 선별된 지의류의 이미지를 재구성하여 개성적으로 표현하기 위한 다양한 누노펠트 기법을 실험하고, 지의류의 조형성을 응용한 패션디자인 총 8벌의 작품을 제작하였다. 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 작품의 모티프로 활용한 둥근 지의류의 형태를 확대, 반복 및 재구성한 결과 리듬감과 율동감을 표현할 수 있었다. 둘째, 지의류의 가장자리가 들뜨는 부조적 특징을 핸드펠트와 니들펀칭의 결합방식을 통해 부조적 표면 효과로 가져 올 수 있었다. 셋째, 지의류에 나타난 색채의 트랜지션은 핸드펠트로 제작한 모티프의 두께와 양을 조절하여 니들펀칭 기법을 통해 회화적으로 표현할 수 있었다. 넷째, 작품의 색채에 있어서 누노펠트 기법의 특징인 양모가 실크쉬폰 조직 사이로 올라와 점묘처럼 표현되는 색조의 변화를 활용함으로써 모티프의 서식처인 암석이나 수피의 색채를 자연스럽게 표현할 수 있었다. 동시에 양모의 색을 직접적으로 노출하여 지의류 윤곽의 색채를 선명하게 표현할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 지의류의 조형성을 누노펠트 기법의 응용을 중심으로 표현 기법을 실험하고 입체적 질감을 부여한 의상을 제작하여 수공예 기법을 통해 자연의 아름다움을 부여한 패션디자인의 조형적 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 누노펠트 기법의 유연성을 바탕으로 봉제를 통한 주름잡기와 니들펀칭 기법 등을 통해 장식적이고 입체적인 시각 효과를 가진 디자인으로 형상화 할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이처럼 자연을 심도있게 탐색하여 얻은 모티프를 적합한 수공예 기법을 응용하여 예술성을 가미한 새로운 표현 기법으로 패션디자인을 전개하는데 본 연구의 의의가 있다. 아울러 이와 같이 자연의 조형성을 토대로 감성적 충족과 자기표현 욕구를 만족시키기 위한 패션디자인의 표현 방법에 대한 연구와 시도가 계속되기를 기대한다.;The modern industrial development has made it possible to produce products in a precise and quick manner, bringing about material abundance by supplying more than demanded. However, uniformly duplicated popular images could not satisfy emotional desire of mankind fully, and differentiated personal emotions and growing longing for freedom represent the current trends of consumption—rise in limited editions based on handcrafting or in first-rate design. Amid accelerating consumers’ needs for diversification, high quality, and individuality, it is urgent to make continued efforts to develop unique image customized to individual consumer’s sensitivity. Fashion design using handcrafting techniques via in-depth search for motif of nature seems appropriate to meet such needs, provide chances of emotional healing, and create unique image. In order to apply their formative characteristics to fashion design, this study pays attention to lichens, which are found in nature but overlooked easily. A lichen is diverse in form, but this study focuses on round lichens among others to select appropriate motifs and express in painting by reorganizing them. In design, the nuno felting technique, which allows for cubic texture with a variety of processing techniques in sheep’s wool, is used to show the possibility of differentiated handcrafting technique. The purpose of this study lies in creating value to design with natural sensitivity and unique beauty and expanding the realm of fashion design expression by applying formative properties of lichens with unique ecology in nature and manufacturing a nuno felting based fashion design. Specifically, literatures on a lichen as a motif source were reviewed to look into the definition and formative features of lichen, conduct case studies about designs based on it and examine their characteristics. The study also examined through previous literatures the definition, characteristics, and applications of Nuno felting, which is thought to be adequate to add cubic texture to its formative features and express them figuratively, and analyzed cases of modern fashion designs based on the Nuno felting technique. Theological research and analysis as mentioned so far were based on books, society journals, fashion periodicals, and Internet search. Considering the findings from the research and analysis, a variety of Nuno felting techniques were experimented with to express uniquely reorganized images of lichen and as a result, eight types of fashion design based on lichen’s formative features were produced. Conclusions of this study are as follows: First, shapes of the round lichen as a motif were enlarged, repeated, and reorganized to produce the rhythmic sense. Second, with its property as relievo, that is, shifted at the corners, hand felting and needle punching were combined to express the surface as in relievo. Third, color transition in lichen was expressed pictorially with the needle punching technique by adjusting thickness and amount of the hand felting based motif. Fourth, in terms of color, by making use of changes in hue where sheep’s wool comes out between tissues of silk chiffon and is expressed like a sketch, rocks as the habitat of the motif or the color of the bark of tree was expressed naturally. At the same time, the color of sheep’s wool was directly exposed, showing the color of lichen outline vividly. In this study, formative features of lichen were experimented with in terms of expression techniques with a focus on the applications of Nuno felting. Also, clothing of cubic texture was made to examine the formative potential of fashion design showing natural beauty with handcrafting techniques. Furthermore, on the basis of the flexibility of Nuno felting, sewn pleats and needle punching were hired to produce design with decorative cubit visual effect. This study has implications for the development of fashion design with a new expression method by applying handcrafting and adding artistic features to the motif found via an in-depth exploration of nature. Moreover, it is expected that continued research and efforts will be made in respect of how to express fashion design which meets emotional needs and self-expression desires with consideration for natural formative features.
