개체론적 환경윤리에 입각한 동물윤리 시각표현연구

Abstract

인류문명의 시작에 있어서 불과 도구의 사용은 인간의 대도약을 가능하게 하였다. 이후 과학과 기술의 발전으로 자본주의를 기반으로 한 산업화와 자동화 그리고 물질만능주의 경향은 인간사회의 가치기준을 변화시켰다. 특히 근대 이후의 힘의 논리에 의한 가치기준의 변화는 제 1, 2차 세계 대전과 같은 전쟁을 유발하였으며, 이후 이러한 생명에 대한 왜곡된 가치판단은 인간사회에 있어서 인간을 포함한 지구상의 모든 생명체에 대한 가치를 하락시켰다. 1960년대를 기점으로, 전 세계적으로 본질과 가치에 대한 질문은 ‘인간이란 무엇인가’, ‘인간다움은 무엇인가’에 대한 질문으로 옮겨왔다. 나아가 이러한 경향은 여자, 아이, 노인, 난민과 같은 소수약자의 인권운동 그리고 환경운동 등으로 확대되었다. 여기서 본인은 환경운동 혹은 생태운동에 동물을 소수약자의 항목에 추가해야 한다고 본다. 본 연구자는 현대 사회의 구조 속에 숨어 있는 동물학대의 사례들을 바탕으로 작업을 진행하였다. 일반적으로 진행되어 온 동물보호운동의 직설적인 고발의 형태들을 지양하고, 수사적 표현을 통한 대중의 관심을 유발할 수 있는 시각적 표현들을 연구하였다. 기존의 방식이 인간의 감성에 호소하는 것에 그쳤다면, 본인의 연구방법은 좀 더 근본적인 변화를 위하여 이성적 접근과 감성적 접근 두 가지 모두를 지향할 수 있는 은유적이고 서술적인 방식을 찾고자 하였다. 연구의 방법론적 측면에 있어서 ‘내러티브(narrative)기법’을 바탕으로 한 다양한 시각적 표현을 지향하였다. 또한 ‘북아트(book art)’형식을 이용하였는데, 기존의 책의 범위를 넘어 놀이개념을 통해 자연스러운 흥미와 관심을 유발시킬 수 있는 효과적인 매체로 여겨진다. 본 논문은 첫째, 본 연구 진행을 위해 연구배경과 연구목적을 제시한다. 둘째, 연구의 이론적 배경이 되는 개체론적 환경윤리에 대한 이해와 구체적 이론인 동물 해방론과 동물 권리론에 대해 알아보고, 현 사회에 드러난 동물학대의 사례들을 살펴보고자 한다. 셋째, 본 연구자의 작업의 디자인 방법론을 주제의 적용의 예와 방법적 표현의 예로 나누어 살펴보고, 본 연구자의 대표적 작업방식인 북 아트를 소개하고자 한다. 넷째, 본 연구자의 작업에 대한 연구로서 [올바른 요리법(The Right Recipe)], [올바른 상자(The Right Box)], [화려한 목소리(Fancy Voice)]를 통해 이론적 배경과 시각적 방법론을 근거로 살펴보고자 한다. 인간은 사고할 수 있기에 동물과 다른 종으로 분류된다. 그런데 이러한 인간우월적 거만함은 지능이 높다는 이유로 지능이 낮은 다른 종들을 지배할 수 있다는 의미로 잘못 받아들여지고 있다. 그러나 인간은 지능이 낮은 다른 종들의 생명과 권리를 존중함으로써 더불어 사는 환경을 조성할 의무가 있다. 인간은 가장 악한 동물이라고 하지만, 가장 도덕적일 수 있는 동물이기 때문이다. 본 연구자는 연구를 통해 동물윤리에 대한 이해와 공감을 확산시키고 나아가 좀 더 나은 방향을 모색할 수 있게 되기를 바란다.;In the beginning of civilization, mankinds achieved the great leap through finding how to use fire and tools. Later, human put endless effort to advance science and technology, resulting to industrialization, automation, and materialism. These trends, stood on the basis of capitalism, transformed the value criteria of human society. After modernization, especially, the new value criteria that was set under the logic of power initiated wars such as world war I and II. This distorted valuation to life depreciated value of every life on earth including human. In 1960s, people started to ask themselves questions related to understanding essence and value of human life: "What is human?" and "What makes human to be human?". This new movement expanded its presence in a way to protect rights for minority and to activate environmental acts. Here, I urge that animals should be considered minor in the environmental acts and ecology. In the research, I focus on the cruelties to animals of which practices are hidden in the frame of modern society. I refuse general approaches that directly illustrate the reality of animal abuse, but study visual expressions that trigger people's interest on the issue through rhetorical methods. Conventional approaches have taken emotional methods to appeal the issue to public. To derive fundamental change to people's stance for the issue, I research new approaches that can address the issue rationally as well as emotionally. For the methodology, I aim to create various visual expressions on the basis of narratives. I choose ‘Book Art’ for the main format to visualize the message as ‘Book Art’ is an effective method to naturally draw attention and interest on the issue while playing with it. This paper is structured as followed. First, I provide the background and the objective of the research. Second, I present the concept of individualism environmental ethics, the theoretical background of this research, with more detailed view of Animal Liberation and Animal Rights Theory. Third, I introduce ‘Book Art’ as main methodology, and explore various usages of this method applied in other subjects. Lastly, I present my own art works, [The Right Recipe], [The Right Box] and [Fancy Voice] as a result of the research. Human is considered exceptional species because of its thinking ability. The arrogance of human supremacy has led human to have erroneous perception that human may dominate other species of low intellectual ability. But, human has a duty to make the environment to be the place where all the living species can live respectful life together. Some people may say that human is the most evil creature, but human is the one who can be the most moral species. With this research, I anticipate that bioethics gets more attentions from society and incubates deeper interests from the public. Moreover, I wish it opens a way to develop more effective way to deliver the message of bioethics to public.
