기계 형태로 은유된 인간의 마음

Abstract

이른바 과학기술시대라 불리는 현대사회 속에서 마음의 표상은 더 이상 심장이 아니다. 오늘날 현대인들은 ‘뇌’에 관한 연구를 기반으로 인간의 마음에 대해 알아가고자 한다. 마음에 관심을 갖고 미술작업을 진행해오던 본인은 과학적인 관점으로 인간의 마음을 분석하려는 학문인 뇌 인지과학을 통해 마음의 존재를 이해해보고자 하였고 이에 관한 여러 담론들 중 특히 연결주의(Connectome)에 주목해보았다. 그리고 이로써 기억과 마음 그리고 정체성을 만들어내는 인간의 마음이 연결하고 또 연결되고자 하는 메커니즘을 내포하고 있다는 사실을 인식하게 되었다. 그래서 본인은 이 마음의 메커니즘을 기계적인 메커니즘으로 재해석하여 마음과 인간이라는 존재 그 자체를 예술적으로 은유할 수 있는 기계를 고안해보고자 하였다. 이러한 사유에 기반을 둔 본인의 작업은 크게 세 가지 방향으로 나뉜다. 첫째는 인간의 마음이 기억을 만들어내는 그 과정을 기계적인 메커니즘으로 해석해보고, 이를 수행할 수 있는 기계를 설계도 형식의 드로잉으로 표현한 작업이다. 본인은 이를 통해 인간의 기억을 형상화하는 새로운 미학적 방법론을 만들어보고자 시도하였다. 두 번째는 한 인간의 정체성이 마음의 메커니즘에 기반해 형성된다는 생각을 토대로 그 마음의 메커니즘에 대한 해석을 통하여 인간이라는 존재를 이해하고 은유하려한 작업이다. 마지막으로 세 번째는 과학기술시대라는 시대적 환경 속에서 살아가는 현대인과 그 삶의 모습을 묘사해보고자 한 설치 작업인데, 본인은 이 설치 작업의 키네틱 오브제들이 만들어내는 움직임들로써 과학기술과의 연결·연합으로 인해 등장한 인간의 새로운 움직임과 정체성을 구현해보고자 한다. 본 논문은 연결성이라는 본성을 가진 마음의 메커니즘을 구현하고자 하는 기계들을 설계함으로써 인간과 마음이라는 존재를 이해해보려 한 본인의 사유와 미학적 태도들을 담고 있다. 본인은 이 논문을 기반으로 본인의 작품 주제인 마음의 메커니즘에 관해 더욱 깊게 고찰해보고자 하며 본인 스스로에게 ‘마음이란 무엇인가?’ 라는 질문을 되던지고자 한다. 그리고 이를 통해 끝없는 사고의 연결과정을 통해서 확장되고 변화해가는 마음과 그 안에서 성장해가는 인간을 탐구해갈 것이다.;The symbol of the mind has shifted from heart to brain in contemporary society which is considered an era of science and technology. Therefore, I attempted to understand the human mind with brain cognition science. Among various discussions related to the science, I concentrated on the science called “Connectome.” In addition, I was able to understand the memory and mind of humans with it. I also realized that the fundamental mechanism of the human brain or mind that creates the identity is centered on a mechanism to connect and to be connected. Thus, I attempted to make a work of metaphorically expressing the mind and existence of humans by analyzing such mechanism of mind. This work appears in three major directions: First, the work is intended to analyze the “mechanism of human mind creating memory” as a mechanical mechanism and to express the machine that can carry this out with drawings used in design. I also attempted to make a new image that metaphorically expresses the human memory with such drawings. The second sought to understand and express metaphorically the human beings through analysis of the mind mechanism based on the thought that the human identity is created based on the mind mechanism. The last work is the installation work designed to express metaphorically the contemporary human beings and their life in the era of science and technology. I would like to represent the new movements and identity of humans that have emerged through connection or consolidation with science and technology with movements created by the kinetic objects of the installation work. This thesis includes my thoughts and aesthetic attitude of attempting to express metaphorically humans and mind with the mind mechanism focusing on the connectivity and the machines representing them. I would also like to pose a question to myself with this thesis as to what mind is by examining the mind mechanism again. Furthermore, I will represent my introspection of mind and humans based on the mechanism and will continue to research unlimited possibilities that will unfold before us with endlessly connected movements.
