애니메이션 <폴라 익스프레스>에 나타난 알란 실베스트리 음악의 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 산타에 대한 소년의 순수한 동심을 그려낸 애니메이션 <폴라 익스프레스(Polar Express, 2004)>에서 작곡가 알란 실베스트리(Alan Silvestri, 1950 ~ )가 영상에 보여지는 시각적 차원의 특징들을 표현하기 위해 사용한 음악적 접근 방식, 또한 크리스마스라는 특수한 소재가 갖는 정서를 표현하기 위해서 영상과 음악이 어떠한 관계를 맺고 있으며 그로 인해 나타난 실베스트리 음악의 특징이 무엇인지 알아보는 것이 주된 연구 목적이다. 연구 방법으로는 캐릭터의 표정이 사실적으로 재현된 애니메이션의 흐름을 정리함으로써 영상에서 보여지는 시각적 특징과 할리우드에서 <폴라 익스프레스>가 지닌 의의를 알아보았다. 또한 실베스트리의 생애 및 그와의 협업으로 유명한 로버트 저메키스(Robert Lee Zemeckis, 1952 ~ )의 작품 경향을 파악하여 실베스트리 작품 세계의 이해를 돕고자 하였다. 본론에서는 연출의도에 따른 음악사용을 파악하기 위해 기승전결 구조에 의한 작품의 줄거리와 음악의 큐시트를 정리하였으며, 음악이 시각적 차원과 관련하여 갖는 기능에 대하여 분석함으로써 작품에 나타난 실베스트리의 음악적 특징을 연구하였다. 연구 결과, 음악은 퍼포먼스 캡처 기술을 사용하여 보다 섬세하게 묘사된 캐릭터의 표정 연기와 이를 통해 나타난 인물의 감정을 중심으로 진행된다. 즉, 산타의 존재에 대하여 의구심을 갖던 소년이 북극에서의 모험을 통해 믿음을 얻게 되는 과정에서의 심리 변화를 나타내기 위하여 선율의 방향성, 음색의 결합 방식, 특수 주법 등 다양한 음악적 요소를 사용하였으며 추상적 감정을 음악으로 구체화하고 있다. 이는 인물 내면의 감정을 음악에 반영하여 모놀로그(monologue)화함으로써 스토리텔링을 유도한 알란 실베스트리 음악의 특징으로 구분할 수 있다. 또한 음악은 시각적으로 나타난 사물의 이미지를 음악적으로 접근하여 청각 이미지로 나타내었다. 이와 같은 사용 방식은 사물의 특성을 음악의 구성 요소에 내재시킴으로써 영상의 배경을 뚜렷하게 묘사하는 시청각적 이미지의 결합을 보여주었다. 크리스마스의 정서를 직접적으로 나타내는 방법으로써 주제가 내포된 가사의 노래 곡을 사용하거나 관객에게 친숙한 기존의 캐롤 곡을 메들리 형식으로 편곡하였다. 이와 같은 음악은 크리스마스에 대한 정서적 공감을 형성할 뿐 아니라 다양한 음악 요소를 통해 영상의 분위기를 조성하고 있었다. 마지막으로 음악은 내러티브를 이끌어가는 주요 인물에 각각의 모티브가 설정되어 반복적으로 등장하며 영상과 유기적 관계를 맺는다. 이 때 모티브 소재의 특징을 유추할 수 있는 선율 및 음색을 사용하거나 내러티브 혹은 장면 이미지에 부합하는 사운드를 사용함으로써 극의 이해를 효과적으로 돕는다. 발전하는 영상 기술과 그에 영향을 받아 점차 다양화 되는 영화음악 사용방식의 지속적이고 체계적인 연구가 필요한 시점에서 본 논문이 영화음악의 이론 정립 및 실제적 사용에 도움이 될 수 있기를 기대한다.;The major purpose of this thesis is to examine a musical access Alan Silvestri, a composer of <Polar Express, 2004> expressing the purity of a boy about Santa Claus, used to express visual characteristics with a performance capture technology, how image and music are related to express a feeling of a special material, Christmas, and what is the characteristics of Silvestri’s music. The flow of a performance capture animation film was arranged to examine visual characteristics of image and meaning of <Polar Express> in Hollywood. In addition, a life of Silvestri and a work trend of Robert Lee Zemeckis who has renown for cooperation with Silvestri were understood to help in understanding Silvestri’s works. The body arranged a cue sheet of music and synopsis of a well-organized work to understanding the use of music according to a direction intention, and studied the musical characteristics of Silvestri showed in his works, by analyzing a function of music about visual dimension. As a result of study, music focused on facial expressions of characters that are more delicately expressed by using a performance capture technology, and a feeling of character. That is, music specified an abstract feeling through musical expressions with various musical elements such as direction of melody, coupling scheme of tone, and special playing styles to show a psychological change in process that a boy doubts Santa Claus is trusted by adventure. This does a monologue by reflecting a feeling of the internal state of character in music, so can be divided into the music characteristics of Alan Silvestri inducing story telling. In addition, music accessed a visually-showed image of things musically, so showed this image into an auditory image. This method of use inhered the characteristics of things in musical component, so showed a combination of audio-visual images expressing a background of an image distinctly. This was a method to show a feeling of Christmas directly, so used a song of lyrics including a subject or arranged existing a Christmas carol that is similar to an audience into a medley. This music not only forms emotional sympathy of Christmas but also creates an atmosphere of an image through various musical elements. Lastly, each motive is set in the major characters leading narrative, so music appears repeatedly, and relates to an image. At this moment, the understanding of the play is effectively helped by using melody and tone that can analogize the characteristics of motive materials, or using a sound suited to narrative or scene image. At this point of time when a continuous and systematic study on a method to use film music that is gradually diversified by a developing imaging technology is needed, it is expected for this thesis to help theory establishment and practical use of film music.
