애니메이션 <드래곤 길들이기(How To Train Your Dragon)> 분석을 통한 존 파웰(John Powell)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

작곡가 존 파웰(John Powell, 1963～)은 현재 영화 음악 뿐만 아니라 애니메이션 음악에서도 활발한 활동을 하고 있는 대표적인 작곡가 중의 한 명으로 애니메이션 <해피피트(Happy Feet, 2006)>, 영화 <본 아이덴티티(The Bourne Identity, 2002)>로 우리에게 잘 알려져 있다. 그는 <드래곤 길들이기(How To Train Your Dragon, 2010)>에서의 차별화된 음악적 어법을 통해 음악성을 인정받아 애니 어워즈(Annie Awards, 2011) 음악상, ASCAP 어워즈(ASCAP Awards, 2011) 음악상 수상 및 아카데미 어워즈(Academy Awards, 2011) 음악상에 노미네이트 된 바 있다. <드래곤 길들이기>의 공동 감독을 맡은 크리스 샌더스(Chris Sanders)와 딘 드블르와즈(Dean Deblois)는 작품에서 현실에 존재하지 않는 상상의 동물인 드래곤과 용감하고 남성적인 민족성을 가진 유럽의 해적 바이킹이라는 소재를 사용하여 ‘진정한 소통의 의미’라는 주제를 보여주고 있다. 이와 같은 판타지 애니메이션에 대한 음악적 접근으로 자신의 음악적 특징을 보여주고 있는 존 파웰은 감독의 연출 의도를 표현하기 위해 테마 혹은 라이트 모티브를 사용하여 내러티브의 흐름에 따라 장면의 연속성 및 일관성을 확립함으로써 스코어의 구조적, 기술적 기능에 대한 활용 가능성을 제시하였다. 본 논문에서는 존 파웰의 <드래곤 길들이기>의 음악 분석을 통해 나타난 그의 음악적 특징에 대해 연구해보고자 한다. 구체적으로 캐릭터 묘사, 사건의 상황, 인물의 심리묘사에 따른 음악의 기능적 역할에 중점을 두어 분석함으로써 작품에 나타난 존 파웰의 음악적 특징과 어법에 대해 고찰해 보고자 한다. 연구 방법으로는 작품의 이론적 배경을 확립하기 위해 <드래곤 길들이기> 작품 배경의 바탕이 되는 드림웍스의 약사(略史)에 대해 연구한 후 드림웍스가 추구하는 차별화된 이념이 작품에 어떻게 반영되고 있는지 알아보았고, 작곡가 존 파웰의 작품세계를 살펴봄으로써 그의 음악적 경향을 알아보고자 하였다. 분석할 작품의 내용을 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말로 나누어 줄거리를 정리한 후 음악의 인, 아웃을 파악하기 위해 음악 큐시트를 작성하고 영상에 따른 음악의 역할과 특징에 대해 분석하였다. 연구 결과 스토리 전개를 반영한 캐릭터의 성격과 이미지, 사건의 상황, 인물의 심리를 묘사하는 음악이 몇 개의 주요 모티브로 제시되었고 그 모티브의 변주된 형태가 애니메이션 전체에 유기적으로 확장되어 메들리 구성으로 음악적 전개를 해나감으로써 작품의 통일감을 주고 있었다. 통일된 상황이나 캐릭터의 성격, 인물의 심리를 나타내는 라이트 모티브나 테마 음악은 대사 대신 음악으로 스토리텔링을 함으로써 주제의 전달을 수월하게 하며 내러티브의 전개와 이해를 도왔다. 또한 모티브의 패턴을 변형시키면서 주요 모티브 사이에 연결구의 역할을 부여함으로써 장면 전환의 연속성과 일체감을 확립하여 존 파웰의 음악적 진행방식을 뚜렷이 보여주기도 하였다. 다양한 타악기나 남성 합창과 같은 악기의 특성을 활용하여 사운드 이펙트를 음악과 함께 통합적으로 사용함으로써 스토리텔링에 직, 간접적으로 개입을 하면서 효과적으로 극의 이해를 돕고 있다는 점 역시 특징적이었다. 마지막으로 유럽의 전통 켈틱 악기(틴 휘슬, 백파이프, 피들)를 사용함으로써 작품의 공간적 배경이 되는 북유럽의 분위기를 연출하였고, 모드나 펜타토닉 음계를 활용함으로써 바이킹이라는 민족성과 문화적 분위기를 묘사하고 있었다. 존 파웰의 이러한 음악적 연출은 내러티브의 시공간을 강화하고 문화적 배경의 확립에 기여하고 있다는 것을 보여주었다. 본 논문의 연구 범위는 존 파웰의 다양한 작품 중 <드래곤 길들이기>에 국한되어 있지만 본 논문이 앞으로 그의 작품을 연구함에 있어 후발 연구자들에게 도움이 되는 자료가 되길 바란다.;John Powell (1963~) is a well known English composer recognized not only for live-action films like The Bourne Identity (2002) but also for animated films like Happy Feet (2006). In his Academy Award nominated animated film, How to Train Your Dragon (2010), Chris Sanders and Dean Deblois, the co-directors of the film, used mythical creatures like dragons and virile Medieval European Viking pirates to express its theme, a real meaning of communication. To express these two directors’ motif, Powell musically approached this fantasy animation by suggesting structural, technical functions of the scores establishing a connection and a coherence of each scene according to a narrative flow with a theme or a leitmotif. This thesis explored and described John Powell’s musical features through examine his score, How to Train Your Dragon (2010). It evaluated Powell’s musical traits by focusing functional role of music portraying each character’s personality, the sequence of events, and psychological description of characters. Moreover, this paper examined how Powell reflected DreamWorks’ differentiated philosophy on his musical work. The musical piece was divided into beginning, development, climax, and conclusion according to its plot. In addition, to understand in and out of the music, a cue sheet was created and musical roles and features of accompanying images were analyzed. And also by researching John Powell’s works, his musical inclination is discovered. This works’ contents are divided into the beginning, development, climax and conclusion and then the story is arranged. After cue sheet of the music is reported to understand in/out of the music and the music’s roles and features about these images are examined. The research discovered that few motifs which reflected personalities of main characters, background events, and psychological description of each person were presented as main motifs and the variations of these motifs were developed and expanded in medley format to give unity of the work. The storytelling using a unified leitmotif describing personalities and psychology of characters delivered the theme to audience more effectively than using lines in addition to help development and understanding of a narrative. Moreover, the continuity of switching scenes established by granting bridging role between main motifs through transforming motif patterns clearly demonstrated Powell’s musical producing style. It was impressive that various percussions, men’s vocal chorus, and timbre of European Traditional Celtic instruments’ properties were involved directly and indirectly on storytelling and effectively help understanding. European traditional instruments including tin whistle, bagpipe and fiddle created Northern European mood in which is a spatial background of this animation. A mode or a pentatonic scale well described the Viking ethnicity and cultural ambience which reinforced the space/time of the narrative and contributed to establish its cultural background. The research was only addressing How to Train Your Dragon among Powell's various works but I hope this thesis would be helpful to the following researchers who would study his other works.
