영화 <다크나이트(The Dark Knight)>의 음악 분석을 통한 한스 짐머(Hans Zimmer)의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 할리우드에서 활동하는 영화음악작곡가 한스 짐머(Hans Zimmer, 1957~)가 작곡을 담당한 영화 <다크나이트(The Dark Knight, 2008)>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구다. 한스 짐머는 할리우드 진출 이래 140편이 넘는 수많은 영화들의 오리지널 스코어들을 완성시키며 명성을 쌓아왔으며 폭넓은 음악적 장르를 활용하여 전통 오케스트라 편성에 전자음악을 통합시킨 형태의 음악적 스타일을 꾸준히 확립해왔다. 슈퍼히어로를 모티브로 하는 원작 만화를 기반으로 만든 영화 <다크나이트>는 악당의 주도적인 역할로 형성되는 주인공과의 대립과 함께 선악의 이중적 캐릭터를 지닌 인물과의 관계형성을 통해 인간의 본성과 도덕적 주제를 심화시키며 개성을 부여한 크리스토퍼 놀란(Christoper Nolan, 1970~)감독의 연출 의도가 돋보이는 작품이다. 본 논문은 이러한 감독의 연출 의도를 이해하는 데 있어 한스 짐머가 어떠한 테마 음악들과 음악적 기법을 사용하여 인물의 심리와 상황의 분위기를 전달하는지 음악과 영상과의 상관관계를 통해 연구해본다. 연구의 첫 단계로, 영화 <다크나이트>가 슈퍼히어로를 모티브로 한 작품인 점을 감안하여 배경지식을 얻고자 할리우드 슈퍼히어로 영화의 변천사를 살펴보았다. 또한 한스 짐머의 생애와 작품 세계를 조사하여 그의 음악사적 위치를 알아보고 영화감독 크리스토퍼 놀란에 대한 작품경향과 연출스타일을 알아보았다. 연구의 방법으로는 영화의 줄거리를 바탕으로 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말로 나누어 내용을 요약하고 스토리 전개 순으로 주요 장면을 선정하여 음악을 분석하였다. 음악의 인 앤 아웃(In&Out)을 파악하여 큐시트를 작성하고 음악과 영상의 상관관계를 중심으로 분석하여 등장인물의 성격과 심리, 그리고 장면의 분위기를 어떻게 음악적으로 표현하였는지 중점적으로 연구하였다. 이를 통해 크리스토퍼 놀란 감독의 연출 의도가 어떠한 음악적 특징을 통해 반영 되었는지 분석하였다. 연구 결과, <다크나이트>에 나타나는 한스 짐머의 음악적 구조는 주요 인물들을 상징하는 테마 음악과 스토리 전개에 따른 상황 음악을 필두로 영상의 분위기와 배경을 부각시키는 음악적 요소들을 구성으로 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이로써 선악의 사투를 통해 드러나는 인물들의 관계 형성과 사건의 전개에 따라 나타나는 상황적 분위기에 부합하는 음악을 영상에 배치하였는데 음악 분석을 통해 도출한 구체적인 음악적 특징은 다음과 같다. 영화가 슈퍼히어로를 모티브로 하는 원작 만화를 기반으로 한다는 점에서 인물의 역동성과 영상의 속도감이 존재하는데 이를 영화 전반에 걸쳐 리듬적으로 사용된 사운드 이펙트(Sound Effect)와 함께 전자음과 합성된 현악기와 일렉트릭 기타의 불규칙한 혼합 리듬으로 표현함으로써 선악의 사투가 벌어지는 장면들에서의 긴박감과 조커의 테러로 인해 유발되는 긴장감을 드러내 주었다. 그리고 영상에 드러나는 어두운 색채감을 표현하기 위해 대부분의 음악을 D단조의 조성으로 표현함으로써 박쥐의 모습을 형상화 한 배트맨 캐릭터에 내재된 어둠의 이미지를 부각시키고 가상악기(Virtual Studio Technology Instruments)와 사운드 이펙트의 활용으로 생성되는 거친 사운드를 통해 마피아가 난무하는 범죄의 도시 고담의 배경 이미지를 극대화시켰다. 또한 세 인물의 구도를 통해 ‘선악과 도덕의 딜레마’를 다루며 인간의 본질을 심층적으로 묘사한 감독의 연출 의도에 입각하여 각 인물들을 상징하는 테마 음악을 만들어 영상에 투영시킴으로써 영화의 주제 의식을 부각시켰다. 마지막으로 상황에 처한 각 인물들의 대비되는 심리 상태를 테마의 변주를 통해 분리시켜 전달하도록 하여 장면의 흐름에 따라 교차되는 인물들의 감정 변화를 관객이 포착할 수 있도록 음악이 받쳐주는 역할을 하였다. 이렇듯 감독의 연출 의도에 입각한 그의 음악은 영상의 흐름과 긴밀한 상호 작용을 하며 등장인물들의 심리 상태와 상황을 효과적으로 전달함으로써 영화를 이끌어 가는 핵심적인 역할을 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 논문의 연구를 통해 한스 짐머를 비롯한 많은 영화 음악가들의 체계적이고 지속적인 연구에 보탬이 되기를 바란다.;The following research carefully examines the musical elements and characteristics of the film <The Dark Knight, 2008>, that has been scored by a Hollywood film composer, Han Zimmer. Since Hans Zimmer began his career as a film composer in Hollywood, he has scored and written soundtracks for over one hundred and forty films, establishing his signature sound that introduces not only the traditional orchestral score, but he also collaborated components of electrical and industrial sound into his orchestral film score. <The Dark Knight> originated from a cartoon that revolves around the superhero. In contrast, the film focuses on the villain and how it carries out the story and the conflict between the villain and the hero reflect the nature of duality in human, which the director endeavors to share with the audience, constantly questioning the virtue of reality. The research has been targeted to comprehend the director's intent as well as how Hans Zimmer strived to deliver his take on <The Dark Knight> throughout his score; explaining the musical devices he used to portray the characters' state of mind and how the musical tone has been set in the film corresponding to the scenes. To fully comprehend the fundamentals of the <The Dark Knight>, the research explores the changes in various Hollywood superhero films. Also, studying Hans Zimmer's both professional career and personal life, following research explores Hans Zimmer's musical cornerstone along with what the director of <The Dark Knight>, Christopher Nolan, aim to pursue and develop in his series of films. Examining in and out of music, the cue sheet has been drawn up and based on the correlation between music and image, the characters' personalities, their mentalities, and the scenes' general tone has been researched in correspondent to music. Consequently, the director's perspective and intent have been thoroughly examined. As a result, Hans Zimmer's musical structure on <The Dark Knight> has been shown across the leading characters, and what they represent and symbolize as the story progresses. Through conflicts between virtue and vice, the characters seize to continuously engage in various situations while the music closely corresponds the shifting vibes of the motion picture. The film, originated from superhero cartoon, expands the dynamics of the characters into the screen. To carry out the expected pace set in the film, Hans Zimmer used rhythmical sound effects and various string instruments along with electric guitar sound, has been combined with irregular beat throughout the score, reflecting the conflicts and irrational behaviors between the hero and the villain while successfully delivering the tensions during his score. Furthermore, the gloomy tone set in the film has been amplified by D minor scale that Hans Zimmer occasionally uses in the score, which never fails to capture and the darkness in Batman character. Aggressive sound derived from the usage of virtual instruments and various sound effects effectively represents the Gotham City filled with crimes and Mafias. Through three leading characters, Director's intent to signify the dilemma that lies between virtue and vice has been thoughtfully integrated into characters, revealing the nature of human. And using the theme music to magnify what each character represent, made the film concrete enough to know what Christopher Nolan wishes to deliver to the viewers. In conclusion, as the story unfolds, the contrasting characters' thoughts are expressed through changes in theme by playing variations while background music contributes to set the story apart as the scene progress. Based on the director's intention, Hans Zimmer's music productively interacts with the motion picture and evidently represents the characters' state of mind. It is impossible not to recognize his score as a major leading element in <The Dark Knight>. Furthermore, through this research development in continuous research on the film score and music technology is exceedingly encouraged.
