Abstract
This study is about Miroslav Volf, who presented a new horizon called a "theology of embrace," which grafts together "exclusion" and "inclusion," which are the characteristics of modernity, as well as theological themes on God's solidarity with victims in human society's conflict. "Inclusion" means things that had been excluded, are subsumed into sameness, and are in the process of absorption. Europe has an extreme history of exclusion; the exclusion of the Jewish people from Germans and Croatian people from Serbians can serve as examples. Everywhere "ethnic cleansing" was committed caused Volf to try to make a core theme of theological reflection about identity and otherness. Looking from his viewpoint, others are distinguishable from me, but beings will also not be absorbed, assimilated or separated, and excluded. Furthermore, in the conflict, I and other people change into perpetrators and victims. Perpetrators commit evil and victims are, in the scheme of goodness, a "self-donation": that is, on Christ's cross, the embrace of the revealed Triune God in the metaphor used by Volf. (Embrace: translated as "inclusion" in the process of acceptance). This metaphor soon leads to arguments that if there is no "will to include" the other, truth and justice are impossible, and the forgiveness and reconciliation that is Volf's premise is developed by soteriology. This thesis discusses the possibility of Volf's "theology of embrace" as a theology of overcoming violence regarding the North Korean migrant problem that arises from the special situation of the division of Korea, poverty, and the multi-cultural phenomena that is migration. In Korean Christianity, there is theological discussion that intends to overcome discrimination and prejudice against aliens and others, so Volf's "theology of embrace" is often cited, but, in the midst of conflict in extreme relationships, and in the Korean situation, where inclusion is a peaceful buzzword that we have grown accustomed to, can religious forgiveness and reconciliation and Volf's "distancing" truly realize justice? Due to poverty and migration, the boundaries between ethnicity and race have become quite ambiguous, although this has not been reduced to class and ethnic conflict. As multicultural society becomes more globalized, abandonment, exclusion, and deportation always exist in our surroundings. In this situation, where does Korean Christianity -- which has to pay attention to very smallest person, the lowest people -- put the focus of the problem? After the "Sewol Ferry disaster," the demand put to Korean Christianity by the public has been to reflect on the past, when Korean Christianity put "me" in the center, and the "other" was conquered, then merged or excluded. Now, as ever, people are suffering and being sacrificed. During this period, we have to assess who are truly the weak (the sacrificial people) of this era. Therefore, this research is about the implications and limitations of a public theology based on Volf's "theology of embrace."
