Abstract
This thesis aims to analyze the reality of ECCE at schools and go on to grasp the characteristics of it, and finally gain important implications. I posit the following three research questions. First of all, what is the reality of subject-related character education using experiences? Secondly, in view of Dilthey's lived experience, what are the characteristics of subject-related character education using experiences? Finally, what are the implications that Dilthey's lived experience give to subject-related character education using experiences? The answer to these questions is provided by the qualitative case studies where three middle school teachers were chosen and involved in their subjects-related character education. The choice was made according to several criteria: teachers' intent on implementing character education, relevance to subjects, utilization of experiences as a subject matter, and inclusion of expression activities. Data collection was made through face-to-face interviews with teachers and students, participant observations in classes, analyses of some related documents. Data analyses were conducted according to the framework which was derived from Dilthey's lived experience concept. The analysis framework is five-fold: (1) recalling lived experiences, (2) expressing lived experiences, (3) connecting lived experiences, (4) reliving lived experiences, and (5) sharing understanding. All those three cases in the research have the following aspect in common: actively exploring the close relationship between class instruction and character education, thereby making use of students’ daily experience as educational resources or contents. Besides, they actively participate in recalling lived experiences, particularly through speech, writing, and pictures. That is, they employ the way of speeches about personal interests (case A), paintings of self-portraits (case B), and writings of autobiographies (case C) to encourage students in expressions. The case B exemplifies connecting lived experiences that are of special interest, but doesn't make a step toward students' trials. The case C offers students some opportunities to practice connecting lived experiences themselves. It provides for imagination and self-input of students and induces the students to find out the meaning and value of life from various lives of others and apply the results to their own lives. In case of sharing understanding, all those three cases are open to public experience, but it still remains doubtful whether it could be ultimately connected to the sharing of understanding process and results. As a result, the ECCE needs to be re-established in such a way as to expand the notion of experience. The expanded ECCE should not be delimited to the common experience from the outside of school wall. It incorporates the processes by which students come up with a large amount of daily experience and understand the meaning of experience in connection with the value or aim of their lives. All those processes could be made available through every possible class activity and should be shared among students. Based on our conversion of recognition on the notion of experience, we should let the ECCE introduce hermeneutical structure of circulation to school classes. Especially, it is required to encourage students to find out significance by connecting experiences instead of simply enumerating them. On the other hand, it is also necessary to practice reliving and to let them share the whole process leading to the results, not just the outcome of understanding. For our present purposes, it seems obligatory that we should make note of the value of expression and reinforce communication as well as re-experience through expression. And most of all, it should come before that to recognize experience as a text for character education and expand the notion of it. The possibility was confirmed through this research that Dilthey's lived experience concept can be adequately applied to both class instruction and the field of character education. Along with that, this research opens up a new perspective on the desirable direction of ECCE. The experienced-based character education at schools is expected to obtain maximum results when teachers are equipped with a keen interest on hermeneutical circulation and perspective when they are actively involved in its implementation. It therefore comes as no surprise that in ECCE, teachers and students should not restrict themselves to any‘experience-shared community.’ Rather, they should try to build ‘a community sharing the meaning explorations of experience and understanding,’so that they grow together in there. Such a process is not restricted to any timeline or activity exclusively organized for character cultivation, but should be kept going on as long as class instruction and our routine of existence persist.
