Abstract
Trial for the restoring the traditional culture and expressing it artistically continuously is processing in various fields. One of the typical trials is the folk painting. Folk painting represents the tradition culture of our nation and is a practical drawing that fertilizes and makes the emotion of the people’s lives beautiful and the cases of reinterpretation and utilizing the folk painting in design field is highly increasing. The design that utilized the folk painting is attempting in multiple fields yet its boundary is uncertain and unclear as it uses the modernized and transformed color and form. Also the work of studying the traditional color in various aspects and data basing it is on the process however as it is biased in one filed so the study of the flowers and birds painting is insufficient. Following this stream of times, the thoughtful study that utilizes the traditional colors and forms of our own is needed for the purpose of popular and creative development. I would like to analyze the colors and forms of the flower in the flowers and birds painting that had painted most popularly among the folk painting in the Joseon period and systemize to widely utilize it into the design subject. This study was processed as the objective research through the theoretical research via literature research and preliminary research and color analysis tool. As a result of it, I suggest the pattern design that developed by the color pallet and design motive of flower kinds in the flowers and birds painting. The research was processed as below. First, I found the concept, back ground and its kind throughout the literature research and existing preliminary research and arranged the theoretical background throughout the design investigation of the flowers and birds painting and pattern. Second, in the object of 38 out of 202 the flowers and the birds paintings that are easy for color extract I found out the color characteristics and after digital imaging I selected the flowers that are classified into 28 kinds as 12 analysis object according to the frequency. Also the color pallet and combination were classified according to the compositions of the court and the private residency. Third, using the CIE a*b* graph and L*C* graph, NCS color wheel and NCS color triangle, I analyzed the overall color characteristics and clustering images then after analyzed the area ratio, constituted the combination images and developed the design motive and pattern design. The research analysis result is same as below. First, flower kinds in the flowers and the birds painting is total 28; 62 peony (19%). 42 rose (12%), 29 Japanese apricot flower (9%), 27 cherry blossom (8%), 21 lotus (6%), 17 chrysanthemum (5%) that shows the highest frequency in peony and rose and the appearance factors were showed as differently the court and private residency. Second, the colors of the court and the private residency in the flowers and the birds painting appeared in YR affiliation and the brightness and chroma, tone group were showed differently in the court and the private residency. Third, there are the difference of the forms and colors of the leaf according to the court and private residency of the flowers and the birds paintings and the leaf in the court flower and the birds painting shows the high expressive technique and completeness. On the basis of the theoretical research and the objective research I suggested the design motive and the pattern design and the result is same as below. For design motive, I selected total 5 flowers; peony, rose, chrysanthemum, cherry blossom and sweetbrier with high frequency and expressed the flower image of the folk painting realistically with the illustration (Adobe Illustrator CS6) program. Color was based on the solid pallet of the court and the private residency and the pattern was designed total 30; the court 15 and the private residency 15 in the form of the square form for one repeat design with the direct jointing type.
