음식 이미지를 통한 환유적 표현 연구

Abstract

An artist receives inspiration from nature's form found in the personal and ordinary daily life. My daily routine begins with breakfast on the table made with my mother's love and devotion. Growing up, 'food' was at the heart of my life. My mother's food was especially at its core. A mother’s table of food is simple but satisfying even if its just a bowl of rice and a piece of kimchi. It is delicious and heartwarming because it contains mom's special touch and it comes from her heart. The image of food, which stemmed from a nostalgic memory of my whole family gathered at the table sharing a meal, satisfied a genuine interest and emotional yearning. The image of food allows one to meticulously and frankly research the object and this allows an unrestricted expression of my formative will. I developed an affinity towards female labor and the object that accumulated such devotion, and through works on female ego, I seek to draw out empirical factors, such as female sentiments, as a central description. Of all the numerous kinds of food, kimchi epitomizes a cognitive and emotional metaphor of a mother's devotion and opens up the possibility of expressing distinct female sentiments and experience. Through this research, I have examined feminist principles and its values inherent in the subject matter, kimchi, and theoretically pondered the process of approaching it formatively. My research actually began from a formative similarity between forms and one day, I associated kimchi's form as a part of nature or a part of the body. This chain of association process derives from its formative similarity. As such, we can see the display of female characteristics, such as the principle of life and the generosity and flexibility of Mother Nature, in the form of kimchi. However, in my later paintings, I have departed from fixed and isolated forms and moved on to a metonymic process to convey a poetic and vague sentiment that reveals the complex accretion of a woman's physical and psychological experience innate in kimchi. As the metonymic form methodology using kimchi progressed, shapes with concentric circles and holes, circles, and bag shaped 'image of female' began to materialize in my work. This form is an allusion of a chorastic space and an image that reflects feminine sentiments. It is also a feminist space encircling the fetus as well as the manifestation of a maternal instinct. This paper's research is based on the theories of Plato and Julia Kristeva's chora and feminism. In this formative expression research, I have analyzed the principle of how colors work in paintings, researched the symbolic expression of the color red in kimchi, and described my research in material technique, focusing on pigments and adhesives. My painting began from an aesthetic interest in kimchi and expresses the figuration of 'kimchi' - a place that contains distinct female sentiments and experience. This paper is fundamentally about researching the theoretical basis of kimchi as an object. Based on this research, I will continue to discover and bring to light the relations between ordinary object that pass us by every day and the value of feminism's expressive language.;예술가는 지극히 개인적이고 평범한 일상 속 자연의 모습으로부터 예술적 영감을 얻게 된다. 본인의 작업은 아침에 눈을 뜨면 식탁 위에 정성스레 차려진 엄마의 밥상으로부터 시작된다. 본인의 성장의 중심에는‘음식’이 있었다. 특히 엄마의 음식이 그러했다. 엄마들의 밥상에는 꾸밈이 없다. 그저 밥 한 그릇에 김치 한 조각이여도 족한 것이었다. 그래도 맛있고 찡한 것은 엄마의 손맛과 정성이 담겨져 있기 때문이다. 온 가족이 둘러앉아 먹었던 밥상에 대한 개인적 향수로부터 시작된 음식 이미지는 본인의 진정한 관심과 정서적 허기를 채워줄 수 있었다. 음식 이미지는 치밀하고 솔직하게 대상을 탐구할 수 있게 하며 본인의 조형의지대로 자유로이 표현 가능하도록 한다. 본인은 여성의 노동력과 정성이 집적되어 있는 사물에 정서적 유대감을 형성하고 작품을 통해 여성적 감수성과 경험적 요소 등을 중심서사로 이끌어내고자 한다. 그 중 수많은 음식 중에서도 김치라는 소재는 어머니의 정성으로 대변되는 인지적, 정서적 구성물로서 여성 고유의 감성과 체험을 드러낼 수 있는 표현의 가능성을 열어주었다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 김치라는 소재에 내재된 여성적 원리와 그 가치를 살펴보고 그것을 조형적으로 접근하는 과정들을 이론적으로 고찰하여 보았다. 실제로 본인의 작업은 대상과 대상간의 형태적 유사성으로부터 시작되었는데, 어느 날 김치의 형태를 보고 자연의 일부로, 또는 신체의 부분으로 연상 작용이 일어났고, 이러한 일련의 연상 작용은 모두 형태적 유사성으로부터 비롯된 것이었다. 이는 생명의 원리, 대자연과 같은 포용성, 유연성을 가지는 여성성의 특성이 김치의 형상으로 나타난 것이라 볼 수 있다. 그러나 후기작품으로 갈수록 본인은 작품연구에 있어서 고정성, 일의성을 갖는 형상에서 벗어나 시(詩)적인 모호한 감수성을 이끄는 환유적 과정을 통해 김치 안에 내재된 여성의 복합적인 신체적, 심리적 경험을 드러내고자 하였다. 김치를 통한 환유적 조형 방법론이 진행됨에 따라, 본인의 작품 가운데 동심원적인 형태와 구멍, 원형, 자루모양인‘여성 이미지’가 나타나게 되었다. 이러한 코라적 공간을 암시하는 형태는 여성적 감수성을 반영하는 이미지로써 생명체를 안고 있는 여성적 공간이자 모성의 발현이라 할 수 있다. 이에 본 논문은 플라톤과 줄리아 크리스테바(Julia Kristeva)의 코라(chora)와 여성성에 대한 이론을 토대로 연구를 진행하였다. 조형적 표현 연구에서는 회화에서 색채의 작용원리를 분석해보고, 김치에 나타난 붉은색에 의한 상징적 표현을 중점적으로 연구하였으며, 재료 기법 연구에서는 안료와 접착제를 중심으로 한 연구를 서술하였다. 여성의 고유한 감수성과 체험을 드러내는 집적소로서의 소재―‘김치’라는 사물에 미적 흥미를 느끼며 형상화한 것이 본인의 작품이고, 그것을 이론적 바탕으로 탐구하고자 한 것이 본 연구의 핵심이다. 이 연구를 바탕으로 가볍게 스쳐지나가는 평범한 사물에 대한 인연과 여성성을 나타내는 표현 언어에 대한 가치를 계속해서 찾아나가고 개진해나갈 것이다.
