The study examines the Gayageum melody in 13 Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok pieces by comparing it to the tunes of the vocal and the woodwind to see the interrelations of how the lines are identical, similar, or different. Moreover, research is done to see the features of the Gayageum melodies. The results are as follows. First, as a result of comparing the Gayageum melody to that of the vocal and the woodwind in Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok, which includes Chosudaeyop, Isudaeyop, Chunggo, Pyonggo, Tugo, Samsudaeyop, Soyongi, Ollong, Pyongnong, Kyerak, Pyonsudaeyop, Olpyon, and Taepyongga, the identical parts with the vocal and the woodwind were in 1,007 beats (43.7%), which took place the most among the entire 2,305 beats. Gayageum melodies that were completely different to the vocal or the woodwind, which is the different melody, happened in 422 beats (18.3%), which took the second most. Melodies that were identical to the woodwind occurred in 383 beats (16.6%) and to the vocal were in 299 beats (13%), which took 4thplace. The part where the Gayageum melody appeared similar to that of the vocal and the wood wind were comparatively inadequate. In the case where the vocal and the wood wind melodies of Namchang Gyemeyeonjo Gagok were different to the Gayageum, it was clear that the Gayageum melodies were more identical to the wood wind rather than the vocal. Therefore, when it comes to a practical Gayageum performance, besides focusing on the vocal line, it attaches importance to the solo line progression in part and to coping with the woodwind melody. Second, the similar melody of Gayageum can be classified into 3 categories. When the first beat among the two beats of Gayageum melody in a Daegagng is identical to that of the vocal or the woodwind and different in the second beat is called Similar Melody Type ①. This type is presented throughout the whole 13 songs of Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok. When different melodies appear at the first beat of the two beats, and when the Gayageum melody is the same to that of the vocal or the woodwind at the second beat, it is classified as the Similar Melody Type ②. This type appears throughout the whole 13 pieces of Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok. Similar Melody Type ③ is when the Gayageum melody is identical to the vocal at the first beat of the two, and the same to the woodwind at the other. Among the entire 13 pieces, this type is shown in 10 pieces including Isudaeyop, Chunggo, Pyonggo, Tugo, Samsudaeyop, Soyongi, Kyerak, Pyonsudaeyop, Olpyon, and Taepyongga. To organize the features of the similar Gayageum melody, the melody of Gayageum, vocal, and woodwind made identical progression, and then additional notes were added to the Gayageum line to give changes. Otherwise, notes were added to the vocal or the woodwind during the sustaining Gayageum melody to give a transition to the tunes. The similar melodies act as a method to connect the tunes to the next phrase or to give a change in the melody for diversification. Third, the different melodies of Gayageum can be divided into two types. Different Melody Type ① is when the melody of Gayageum, vocal, and woodwind are all progressed differently in one Daegang. Such type appears throughout the whole Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok 13 pieces. Different Melody Type ② is when the vocal and the woodwind progresses in the same way but not with that of the Gayageum in one Daegang. Among Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok 13 pieces, this type is shown in 12 pieces, including Chosudaeyop, Isudaeyop, Chunggo, Pyonggo, Tugo, Samsudaeyop, Ollong, Pyongnong, Kyerak, Pyonsudaeyop, Olpyon, and Taepyongga. The features of Gayageum’s different melodies are used for the transitions to the tunes. When the line is progressed with the vocal and the woodwind with major 2nd, perfect 4th, and perfect 5th, the different Gayageum notes does not lead to alienation to the line, because the major melodies are performed by the vocal and the wood wind. Although Gayageum’s different melodies are progressed above octaves from time to time, this also does not give a sense of difference but a unity of leading the Gagok’s main melody line. In addition, different melodies appear in the end of each piece due to the Gayageum’s descending cadence line. This shows how naturally the piece is completed in the melody of perfect 4th and perfect 5th. Fourth, the features of the Gayageum melodies shown in Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok can be greatly classified into three types. The first type is when the melodies of Gayageum, vocal, and woodwind are all identical or entirely different in some parts, or progress is made along the woodwind melody and not the vocal in one song. This type of song is made in Chosudaeyop, Chunggo, Pyonggo, Pyongnong, and Taepyongga. Second type of melody is when the Gayageum melody is the same to the vocal and woodwind, identical to the woodwind rather than the vocal, and sometimes identical to the vocal in one song. Such type appears in Samsudaeyop, Soyongi, Olpyon. The third type is when the Gayageum melody is totally identical to the vocal and woodwind in some parts, occasionally similar to the vocal line rather than the woodwind, and sometimes holds an independent line at a relatively low rate. This type corresponds to Isudaeyop and Tugo. The songs which were not referred to, such as Ollong, Kyerak, and Pyonsudaeyop, does not apply to any of the types above. To sum up, as a result of examining the Gayageum melody line through comparing with the identical, similar, and different lines of the vocal and woodwind instruments from Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok, the Gayageum melody is not vertical but rather flat and transverse. Moreover, the line well demonstrates the elegant Korean traditional music tune. Focused on the Gayageum melody in Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok, the study compared the line with the relationship of the vocal and the woodwind instrument tunes in the perspectives of the same, similar, and diverse melodies. The author is looking forward for more studies to continue in different viewpoints.-
