Abstract
Amidst the turbulent modern society, contemporary individuals neglect the potentials of human existence, as they are embedded in societal frameworks, desperate only to accomplish immediate tasks. Moreover, although being possessors of infinite potentiality, they have lost such attributes, as they are rendered into components of a uniform society. Thus this study suggests the individual possibility of exuviation from such state while still abiding by the frames and norms of society, based on Georges Bataille's (1897-1962) attitudes towards death, and thereby excavating a novel potentials of leading life. Bataille endeavored to discuss and inquire "death" and "sexuality" that evoke the sense of rejection despite being innate characteristics of human existence. According to Bataille, we can experience death indirectly when we breach the taboos placed on "sexuality," a topic generally rejected. And this very "breaching of taboo" allows us to overcome our limitations by the experience of indirect death, which expands the possibility of free cognition. Such "breaching of taboo" of extreme as well as paradoxical significance drives individuals to their limits, and thereby enables them to gain such indirect experience of death. Thus based on such attitudes towards death, 「The Silence」(2015), a creative choreographed work, portrays how contemporary individuals, who limit their scope of existence, subsumed in the everyday routines of life, can expand potentials of attaining rich cognition and the limitations of human existence, through the experience of indirect death. Thus this thesis choreographs 「The Silence」 based on Bataille's perception of death, composing it into a total of three acts. This choreographic rendition intends to show how breaching taboos on "sexuality," the subject of typical rejection, leads to a transcendental experience of human limitations. In order to show this argument, this thesis choreographs 「The Silence」 based on theme and content, stage composition, movement and route of the dancer, as well as object and stage illumination. Act 1 postulates the dark, passive posterior of the state as the "field of oppression" in order to express the state of psychological oppression and repulsion towards the tabooed "sexuality." The long, red piece of fabric, as an object, visualizes the "line of taboo," and stage illuminations also emphasize the image of taboo by facilitating a sense of bars, through aligning horizontally the road-shaped lightings in the back and middle of the stage with the vertical PAR lights. The dancer revolves around the posterior of the stage, and her arms endeavor in vein to resist the taboo, but her fixed legs confine her, thus representing the inevitable snare of the taboo. Act 2 reforms the middle of the stage, the place that possesses the most realistic meanings and is best harmonized, into a "sphere of pleasure" in order to portray the indulgence of sexual desire and instinct that had formerly been oppressed. The object is facilitated in order to send a two-fold meaning: the breach of taboo is represented through the disentanglement of the object that had been neatly aligned on the floor, and the dancer's constant contact with the object shows indulgence in pleasure. road-shaped lightings that had lightened the back of the state are removed, while the PAR lights that had illuminated the image of imprisonment still more brightly lighten up the stage. The dancer moving towards the middle of the stage, the "sphere of pleasure," and her active utilization of the object, touching and feeling her body, represents how the dancer freely moves in and out of her symbolic confinement that the lightings convey. This action is congruent to the dancer's liberation from her own frame of oppression, by breaching the taboo and therefore expressing her sexual desires. Lastly, act 3 endeavors to portray the state of experiencing indirect death, transcending one's own frames, and as a consequence how the individual, represented by the dancer, realizes enlarged scope of life. The active arena of the stage, the frontier of the stage, is postulated as "the sphere of indirect experience of death," while it becomes expanded into the entire stage, visually signifying its expansion into "the sphere of human capacity." The object is thrown and scattered in order to show the expansion of free cognition. The lighting is utilized to illuminate the active frontier of the stage through the usage of road-shaped lightings, and later it expands into the lightings of the entire stage, while simultaneously PAR lights are located randomly, representing the liberation into and expansion into a self that can exercise diversified cognition. The dancer moves towards the frontier of the stage and also freely roams the entire stage, while strangling herself with the object as a allegory of experiencing indirect death. Her wild rendition of the object, both throwing and dispatching it, is a symbol of her transcendence out from former limits, emancipated from such confinements. Therefore, 「The Silence」 paradoxically represents that through the indirect experience of death, by "breaching" and accepting formerly oppressed sexual "taboos," the modern individual can emancipate herself from such course of repressed life. However, there seems to be a lack of logical justification to link sexuality and death within the framework of Bastille: death is something that cannot be ontologically experienced directly, and what Bastille means as an indirect experience holds limitations of logical proof. Moreover, that a human being experiences death in the very course of life itself is ironic; thus such endeavors to seek indirect death cannot possibly be logically shown. Additionally, the very nature of the human, bodily activities beholds impulsivity and violence as essential characteristics. Such violence may cast problems upon human dignity and value, as human morality and value are objective virtues that must be upheld no matter what, despite the inevitable subjectivity of human society and human culture. No such violence that casts threat upon human dignity and values can be justified. Therefore although this study has suggested the integration of "sexuality" and "death" via Georges Bataille's theory, in order to present the potentials of expanding the scope of the modern self, as his theory is interspersed with innate logical flaws, it can be said that sexuality and death are separate matters. Furthermore, as violence upon human dignity and value systems can never be justified, Bataille's theory cannot call upon claims to human existence and its potentials. Thus the original focus of this study, such potentials of "breaching taboos," can be said to be a methodological attempt.
