김정일·김정은 권력이행기 『로동신문』1호 사진 연구

Abstract

북한에서 ‘1호 사진’은 북한의 최고지도자가 등장한 사진을 지칭하는 용어이다. 본 연구는 정치 커뮤니케이션의 도구로 활용되는 북한 ‘1호 사진’의 특성을 밝히고, 북한 당국의 시기별 ‘1호 사진’ 활용 방식을 파악하는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 외형변수와 내용변수로 구성한 분석항목을 가지고 김정일과 김정은의 권력이행기 3년간 『로동신문』에 보도된 ‘1호 사진’ 총 3,604장을 분석하였다. ‘1호 사진’은 시대적 상황에 따라 북한 당국이 대내적으로 전달하고자한 메시지를 파악하는데 도움을 주며, 이는 북한의 변화를 유추할 수 있는 유용한 자료로 활용할 수 있다. 북한은 선대 지도자의 사망으로 인해 두 번의 권력이행기를 겪었다. 각 시기마다 북한의 최고지도자가 추구한 국가 목표가 상이하다는 점에서 권력이행기는 이전 정권으로부터의 변화가 시작되는 전환점이라고 볼 수 있다. 이는 새로운 지도자의 안정적인 권력 승계를 위한 초석을 다지는 시기이자 후계자가 최고지도자로 공식 추대되기 이전부터 암묵적으로 최고지도자의 실질적 권한을 행사하는 시기이다. 따라서 김정일의 권력이행기와 김정은 권력이행기에 보도된 ‘1호 사진’을 분석하는 것은 두 지도자의 통치 성향과 방향성을 파악하는데 기본적인 단서를 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 분석 결과에 나타난 두 시기의 공통점을 통해 ‘1호 사진’의 전반적인 특성을 발견할 수 있었다. 첫째, ‘1호 사진’은 북한 당국의 계획 하에 매년 특정 기간에 게재 빈도와 게재량이 증가한다. 둘째, ‘1호 사진’은 최고지도자를 미화하는 것을 최우선 목적으로 두기 때문에 사진기술뿐만 아니라 등장인물의 표정과 복장 등 세심한 부분까지 고려하여 주인공의 모습을 극대화하는 방법으로 촬영된다. 셋째, ‘1호 사진’의 효과적인 메시지 전달을 위해 특정한 때와 상황에 맞는 규격화된 촬영 기법이 존재한다. 넷째, ‘1호 사진’은 최고지도자의 이미지를 형성하는데 기여한다. 그런데 두 시기의 ‘1호 사진’은 북한 당국의 입장을 옹호하는 동일한 목적을 가지고 활용되었으나 세부적인 활용 방식에서 차이를 보인다. 두 시기의 ‘1호 사진’은 사진 기술, 노출 형태, 보도 주제의 측면에서 두드러진 차이가 나타났다. 먼저 김정일 시기에는 단조로운 사진 기술을 사용한 반면 김정은 시기는 다양한 사진 기술을 사용하였다. 김정일 시기는 클로즈업샷과 미디엄클로즈업샷을 기피하고 대부분 깊은 초점으로 촬영하여 김정일이 과도하게 부각되는 것을 자제했지만, 김정은 시기는 클로즈업샷과 미디엄클로즈업샷, 얕은 초점을 적절히 사용하여 지도자의 모습을 생동감 있게 묘사하였다. 더불어 김정일 시기는 사진의 크기를 통해 ‘1호 사진’의 상대적 우월함을 과시했지만 김정은 시기는 ‘1호 사진’의 크기를 줄이고 게재량을 늘리는 방식으로 레이아웃의 다양화를 시도하여 인물보다 지도자의 성과를 부각시켰다. 마지막으로 김정은 시기는 ‘1호 사진’ 보도에 있어서 비교적 다양한 분야의 주제를 다루었다. 김정일 시기 ‘1호 사진’의 보도 주제가 주로 군사와 정치에 관련한 내용이었다. 반면에 김정은 시기는 경제, 군사, 정치에 초점을 맞추는 한편 과학·의학, 스포츠·레저, 사회 부문 등에도 주력한 것을 확인하였다. 두 시기의 ‘1호 사진’이 이러한 차이를 보이는 것은 북한 당국의 시기별 ‘1호 사진’ 활용 의도가 다르기 때문에 나타난 결과이다. 북한 당국의 의도가 무엇이었는지 파악하기 위해 각 시기 ‘1호 사진’의 외적·내적 특징을 종합적으로 분석하여 두 지도자의 유훈통치 스타일과 두 지도자가 형성하고자 한 지도자의 이미지를 유추했다. 결론적으로 김정일 시기는 유훈사진을 부각하여 권력 승계 정당성 획득과 후계 준비 과정에서 김정일이 세운 업적을 강조하고, 군사·정치 분야에 집중한 현지지도 보도를 통해 선군정치를 위한 기반 마련에 주력하였다. 반면 김정은은 할아버지 김일성의 젊은 시절과 유사한 외모를 부각시킨 사진을 반복적으로 보도하였는데 이를 통해 혈연관계를 강조하여 정치 정당성을 획득하고자 하였다. 더불어 김정은은 다양한 분야의 현지지도 사진을 통해 개인의 능력을 강조하여 후계자의 자질을 입증하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 권력이행기 김정일·김정은의 통치 스타일과 이미지 메이킹을 분석하기 위한 도구로 북한의 ‘1호 사진’을 활용하였다. 사진은 활자로 된 기존의 문헌연구에서 파악하기 어려운 세밀한 정보를 제공하는 역할을 하기 때문에 본 연구는 기존의 김정일·김정은 비교 연구에 새로운 시각을 더하였다고 할 수 있다.;In North Korea, ‘No.1 photo’ refers to the image of the supreme leaders. This study aims to explore the characteristics of ‘No.1 photo’ as a means of political communication and to investigate how the North Korean government utilized ‘No.1 photo’ per period. For this purpose, this study analyzed total 3,604 images of ‘No.1 photo’ published in 『Rodong Sinmun』 for each three years of the power transition based on the analysis factors composed of external variables and content variables. Since ‘No.1 photo’ contributes to a better understanding of the messages that the North Korean government attempts to internally deliver, it can be useful data to analogize the changes of North Korea. North Korea under the hereditary successions of power for three generations experienced two power transitional periods. Given that the national objectives pursued by the supreme leaders in North Korea were different, the power transition can be regarded as a shifting point of North Korea where changes begin to be differentiated from the previous government. A power transitional period is the time in which the basis for stable power hereditary succession for new leader is strengthened as well as the successor implicitly exercises the actual power prior to his official selection as a supreme leader. Therefore, analyzing ‘No.1 photo’ in the power transitional period of Kim Jong-Il and Kim Jong-Un provides basic clues to comprehend the political characteristics of the two leaders and the directions of the North Korean government in each period. The general characteristics of ‘No.1 photo’ are revealed through the analysis findings on common grounds of the two periods. First, the frequency and amount of the publication of ‘No.1 photo’ increase in a specific period every year. Second, since the beautification of the supreme leaders is the top priority of ‘No.1 photo’, their prestigious appearances are maximized through not only photograph techniques but also the details such as the facial expressions or outfits. Third, for the efficient message conveyance of ‘No.1 photo’, the standardized photograph techniques exist according to specific circumstances and times. Fourth, ‘No.1 photo’ contributes to forming the images of the supreme leaders. However, ‘No. 1 photo’ in the two periods is distinguished in detailed utilizations in spite of their identical objectives to advocate the stances of the North Korean government. ‘No.1 photo’ in the two periods has distinct differences in terms of photograph techniques, exposure formats, and report topics. First, the Kim Jong-Il period used plain photograph techniques, while the Kim Jong-Un period used a variety of photograph techniques. In the former period, close-up shots and medium-close-up shots were avoided and in-depth focus was used instead to restrict the explicit emphasis of Kim Jong-Il. In the latter period, close-up shots, medium-close-up shots, and shallow focus were appropriately used to vividly describe the appearances of Kim Jong-Un. Moreover, The large scale photos were used to display the relative superiority of ‘No.1 photo’ in the former period, while the variations of layout were tried to highlight the performances of the leader than the character itself by decreasing the scale of ‘No.1 photo’ and increasing the publication amount in the latter period. Lastly, In the Kim Jong-Un period, the reports related to ‘No.1 photo’ covered relatively diverse topics. It was confirmed that the main report topics related to ‘No.1 photo’ were military and political issues in the Kim Jong-Il period, compared to the topics on economy, military, and political issues as well as science, medicine, sport, leisure, social issues in the Kim Jong-Un period. The reasons of these differences between the two periods are that ‘No.1 photo’ per period was intended to be differently utilized by the North Korean governments. To understand the intentions of the North Korean government, the integrated analysis on the detailed utilization methods of ‘No.1 photo’ in each period, and the necrocracy style of the two leaders and their images could be analogized. As a result, the photo on teachings of the departed was stood out to emphasize the justification of power succession and his performances in the process of preparing the succession and the establishment of military-first policy through the reports on local guidance centered on the field of military and political issues in the Kim Jong-Il period. In contrast, The Kim Jong-Un photos stressing the similar appearances with young Kim Il-sung were repeatedly reported to try to acquire positive images and to verify the capabilities as his successors to underscore the personal competences of Kim Jong-Un through local guidance photos in a variety of fields. This study used the ‘No.1 photo’ in North Korea as a tool to analyze the method of ruling and the image making of Kim Jong-Il and Kim Jong-Un during their hereditary successions. Photograph provides detailed information that cannot be found in the literature research. Therefore this study has contributed to provide new perspective to previous studies on the leadership of Kim Jong-Il and Kim Jong-Un.
