Abstract
The purpose of the study is to identify the structure and features of conflict narrative between game players in MMORPGs. In online games, experienced narratives are formed not only by the interaction between players and environments, but also by the interaction between players. Players’ combats, debates and struggles are not just actions nor events. These actions actually construct the conflict narrative in online game. Conflict narrative between players introduces players’ core experiences in online games and in advance, shows the essential behaviors of human being in cyber space. In this kind of view, this study structuralizes and classifies the types of conflict narrative. Above all, this thesis defines the generative structure of the meaning of conflict narrative. Conflict narratives between players are generated individually and synchronously. The word ‘Conflict’ is usually confused with the words match, struggle, interaction and etc. However, only the word conflict can cover the meaning of confrontational situation and active interaction. From this point of view, this thesis defines ‘conflict narrative’ as the experience of online game players during their whole play, include events of real struggles like matches and situations of invisible confrontation. In conflict narrative, players are the main actors of the story and they become ironic character who has both heroic and realistic features. They cannot help participating in successive conflicts because of the interdependent relationships. Also, as players exist in both game space and out of that, conflict narrative moves in and out of game spaces too. As the reason of that every player becomes main actor of the story, conflict narrative is highly uncertain and complicated. This study is aimed at classifying the conflict narratives in 4 types. First, it can be divided in two broad categories, the ideal story and the random story. Second, it can be also divided in two, the in-game narrative and outer-game narrative. Combining these two broad categories, there comes 4 types of conflict narrative. Ideal story in game is the fate story. It imposes players to participate in endless player versus player conflict, which can be represented by sieges of fortress or PvP matches. Ideal story outer game is the carnival story. Carnival story composes a field for fellowship and societal harmony of players. Random story in game appears as struggle story. The struggle is conflict between the players who resist changes in game system and the others who adapt themselves well to game updates. Lastly, random story outer game becomes the ritual story, as players bring their private conflict events to public space. All in all, the conflict narrative between players in online game can be analyzed with the french structuralist Claude Bremond’s theory, the logic of narrative possibilities. The conflict narratives can be divided into several elementary sequences, made up of 3 lementary functions. Diversely combined elementary sequences become complex sequences. Conflict narrative is diachronically progressed by circulation and repetition of the elementary sequences, and the connection between in and outer game space forms synchronous paradigms. With semantic point of view, each conflict narrative indicates its own value, some of which can be binary opposition. Claude Levi-Strauss’s theory about mythical thinking and totemic structure suggests that the contradiction of binary oppositional values can be solved with the mediator. The contradiction between conflict narratives between players also can be solved with the mediator narrative, spontaneously created by players themselves. In conclusion, this paper proves that conflict narrative between online game players has its own structure and generative structure of meaning.;본 연구는 MMORPG에서 발생하는 플레이어 간 충돌 서사를 다룬다.
