Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a plan for activating parent-participating activities and examine responses of the parents, the children, and the teacher to the plan so that the problems with parent-participating activities in the Sarang Class for five-year-olds could be identified and solved. For this purpose, the following questions were set: 1. What is the plan for activating parents' participation in the Sarang Class for five-year-olds? 2. What responses do the parents, the children, and the teacher make to the plan for activating parents' participation in the Sarang Class for five-year-olds? This study was conducted in the class for five-year-olds at Dodam Kindergarten established as a public kindergarten in Seoul and the subjects included 22 parents, 22 children, and 1 class teacher. It was conducted from August 1 to November 30, 2015 and started from awareness of problems with parent-participating activities. A plan for activating parents' participation was developed and implemented on the basis of the analysis of parents' participation status during the 2014-2015 term, the analysis of basic data concerning curricular organization, and the results of the survey on parents' needs. This study was conducted in the order of the first implementation, assessment of the first implementation and development of the plan for the second implementation, the second implementation, and assessment of the second implementation and final assessment. During the course of the study, data were collected from the questionnaires for parents, teachers' journals, interviews with parents, parents' moving pictures, formal and informal responses of parents, and activity plans. In addition to data collection, data were analyzed by recording responses of the parents and the children to the implementation along with the researcher's feelings or interpretation as the researcher' comments and were categorized, coded, and analyzed in terms of the questions. This study obtained the following results: first, a plan for activating parent-participating activities was developed and implemented. The activities aimed to supplement the existing type of parents' participation; the parent education materials based on home correspondence were adapted to provide QR codes and form the space for parents' participation and home activities connected with story newspapers of the Sarang Class were supported. The teacher and parents were asked to set and achieve a common goal for developing children through interviews with parents. Large-group lectures for parents that reflected parents' needs and small-group activities connected with the lectures were performed; reading and relevant activities agreed by the teacher and parents were performed as part of voluntary activities; and child observation was performed through the role of an assistant teacher in developing parent-participating activities. When the first implementation was assessed, the need of parent-participating instruction that involved both children and their parents in connection with home and lectures for parents was found. The second implementation reflected the assessment of the first implementation to perform parent-participating instruction more strongly connected with home and lectures for parents. Second, as for the responses of the parents, the children, and the teacher to activation of parents' participation, the activation brought positive changes to all of them. The parents became aware of the teacher's expertise and got a better understanding of the teacher's work. They got a better understanding of kindergarten education and their child, were motivated to participate in diverse parent-participating programs, and got a greater need for parent-participating activities. Children became more likely to share their knowledge and data with peers and to make positive behaviors through the kindergarten-home connection. They also became more likely to participate in home-connected activities. The teacher saw their negative perception of parent-participating activities changed into positive one and got better expertise in parents' participation. This study suggested the need for parent-participating activities, and made a multilateral analysis of the activities and supported them to form parent-teacher companionship and collaboration. This study is significant in that it has activated parents' participation through the activities and exerted positive effects on the teacher and the children as well as on the parents. This study is expected to help teachers in education practice develop a practical plan for supporting parent-participating activities.
