For a long period of time, human beings have raised these fundamental questions based on deliberate introspection: Who am I? What do I live for? As materialism and technocracy rapidly develop within the modern society, the value of life is merely focused on materialistic elements, and people today live without being able to reflect back on their lives. Due to such change, they forget the true value of life and fill their ego with rational thoughts, living the life society wants them to live, which ultimately leads to loss of identity. At the end of the day, human beings find themselves striving to find their identity, and as they reach their rational limitation, they begin to rely on transcendent God to overcome their boundary. Therefore, they recover their true ego as faithful Christian despite of what the society asks them to be. Because it is crucial for modern people to be awake among the lost and to recover the true ego in their own life, this study concentrates on Three Stages in Human Existentialism studied by Søren Aabye Kierkegaard(1813-1855), who is considered to be the very first existentialist philosopher. Kierkegaard, through his works 『Enten-Eller』(1843) and 『Stadier paa Livets Vei』(1845), described the three stages as aesthetic, ethical, and religious existence stages. In the ‘aesthetic existence stage,’ one falls into deep despair upon repeatedly seeking for pleasure; on the other hand, in the ‘ethical existence stage,’ one regrets the life full of pleasure and tries to follow the rules of society, but falls in front of the feet of Christ after recognizing that he or she is just a sinner. Lastly, in the ‘religious existence stage,’ one depends heavily on Christ, admitting the fact that he or she is simply incapable of doing anything, and recovers the ego through pious faith in God. The creative dance work 「Ego(我)」, therefore, puts on the perspective of Kierkegaard, a devote Christian himself, and delivers a message that one can recover the true ego. The work is divided into three chapters, analyzed based on the content including the message and theme, use of space, movement and moving route of the performer, costumes, and lighting. The first chapter expresses the despair that one experiences after wandering and seeking for pleasure in hollow things. To describe the conflict, I used a slanted stage space, including the pathway and lighting, which extends from the back of the right stage to the front of the left stage. The lighting for the pathway was partially blocked to express the relationship between God and the corrupted self. I constantly swirled my arm, going back and forth on the slanted pathway, to express the pleasure-seeking, wandering self; moreover, I wore a black costume that symbolizes sin and corruption. The music used in this chapter was a drum solo piece that has an irregular tempo, which expressed agitation and conflict within the self. In the second chapter, one discovers the empty, hollow self, and tries to adapt to the society and live an ethical life. I used a slanted stage path as a ‘passive space’ that connects the back of the left stage to the front of the right stage, which portrays an adaptive nature. The same lighting from the first chapter was used; however, I overlapped the lighting and extended the path to express the movement into the ‘ethical existence stage’ from the ‘aesthetic existence stage.’ Towards the end of second chapter, I utilized an acute, straight form of high lamp lighting to highlight the self being bound to the frame of the world. I expressed the fragility of human being by repeatedly running back and forth only within the ‘passive space,’ stretching my black costume, and as I fall to the ground, I expressed the repentance in Christ. Having a regular tempo, the music used in this chapter contains a build up from a soothing, lyrical melody to a loud, passionate tone to emphasize the repentance of self. The last chapter portrays an overall hopeful theme after realizing the true ego and recovering the identity through the faith in Christ. The center stage-mostly used to accentuate the overall theme-was utilized as the ‘space of enlightenment’ to highlight the recovery of self. Red lighting, which symbolizes Christ, was added to dye the performer’s body. Also, instead of the slanted pathway used in the previous aesthetic and ethical existence stages, I used a straight pathway to depict the presence within the ‘religious existence stage.’ As I took off the costume, I wander around the stage, putting the self together to express the final recovery of the self. Despite of the unwavering materialistic minds of the world, the creative dance work 「Ego(我)」, in the end, emphasizes the need of recovering the lost ego through human existentialistic stages within the perspective of Christianity. Thus, it delivers a message that human beings must recover their true ego as Christians.-
