영화 <빌리지(The Village)>의 음악 분석을 통한 제임스 뉴튼 하워드(JAMES NEWTON HOWARD)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

영화 안에서 사용 되어진 수많은 영상 언어들 중에서 영화 음악이 갖는 많은 기능들이 있다. 시간과 공간의 배경음악으로서의 기능을 하기도 하고 등장인물의 감정이나 심리를 묘사하기도 하며 행동을 표현하기도 한다. 다양한 장르의 영화들 중에 특히 스릴러 장르의 영화에서는 음악의 사용이 중요한 비중을 차지하며 긴장과 공포를 더욱 극대화 시키는 역할을 한다. 스릴러란 관객 속에 공포와 두려움의 분위기를 낳기 위해 정교한 플롯에 의존하는 서스펜스 영화들을 말하며 서스펜스란 스릴러를 구성하는 주된 요소로 관객들에게 앞으로 일어날 상황에 불안과 긴장을 조성하여 영화 전체의 분위기와 클라이막스의 효과를 더욱 증가시키기 때문에 스릴러 장르에서 많이 사용된다. 그 중에서 우리에게 영화 <식스 센스(The Sixth Sense, 1999)>로 알려진 할리우드에서 촉망 받는 시나리오 작가이자 영화감독인 M.나이트 샤말란(M. Night Shyamalan, 이하 샤말란)의 영화 <빌리지(The village, 2004)>는 공포에 의하여 유지되는 고립된 마을을 통해 평범한 등장인물들과 정체불명의 생명체라는 소재를 사용하며 캐릭터간의 긴장과 삶의 진지한 가치를 나타낸 심리 스릴러 영화이다. 본 논문은 영화 <빌리지>의 음악 분석을 통해 작곡가 제임스 뉴튼 하워드(James Newton Howard,1951~)의 음악적 특징을 연구하고자 한다. 제임스 뉴튼 하워드는 샤말란 감독과 함께 대부분의 영화 음악을 작업한 작곡가이며 샤말란 감독의 스릴러적 색채에 가장 잘 부합되는 음악을 만들어 냈으며 국내에서 아직까지 연구 되지 않은 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 음악적 특징을 연구한다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그리하여 제임스 뉴튼 하워드가 스릴러 영화의 장면 속에서 보여지는 분위기를 음악과 어떻게 연관시켰는지, 영화음악이 영상 안에서 어떠한 기법들을 사용하여 이야기 하고 있는지, 등장인물들의 심리와 상황에 따른 음악적 어법들을 어떻게 표현하였는지 등을 장면과의 상관관계를 통하여 분석 하고자 한다. 연구 방법으로 먼저 할리우드 스릴러 장르의 역사에 대해 알아보고 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 작품세계와 영화의 제작 배경, 감독 나이트 M 샤말란에 대해 살펴보았으며 영화의 줄거리를 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말로 나누어 전체 내용에 대한 이해를 돕고자 하였다. 영화에 쓰인 음악과 작곡가의 연출 의도를 알 수 있도록 큐시트를 작성하였으며 큐시트를 토대로 장면을 분석한 후, 음악의 기본요소와 특징에 대해 분석 하였다. 연구 결과 내러티브에 따라 영화 전체 분위기의 흐름을 음악이 동일하게 나타내고 있었는데 3음을 생략하여 조성을 모호하게 만들어서 보이지 않은 정체불명의 생명체에 대한 불안과 인간 본연이 가지고 있는 죽음에 대한 막연한 공포를 표현하였으며 내러티브에 따른 장면에 맞는 악기들을 곳곳에 적절히 사용하였다. 또한 불협화성과 반복 선율, 반음계적 선율, 복조화음을 사용함으로서 사건 속에 놓인 등장인물의 감정과 심리를 표현하였으며, 각각의 어쿠스틱 악기들로 하여금 특수한 주법들과 극단적인 아티큘레이션, 음색들을 통하여 마치 신스사이저를 사용한 것 같은 음향학적인 사운드를 구현해 낸 것이 특징적이었다. 본 논문을 통하여 철저한 시나리오 분석 능력과 클래식 화성에 바탕을 둔 오케스트라 사운드를 현대음악적인 사운드로 표현한 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 탁월한 연출력과 영화음악이 앞으로도 더욱 체계적이고 활발하게 이루어지길 바란다.;Film music, among the many film languages used in movies, holds an important role and has numerous functions. At times it is used to express time and space, and sometimes it reveals a characters’ emotions, psychological state and future actions. In various genres of films, especially thrillers, music is used to maximize suspense and fear for the viewers. A thriller is a suspense film that relies on elaborate plots designed to deliver suspense and fear. Suspense is its main aspect, its purpose to intensify the films’ overall atmosphere and climax by harmonizing anxiety and tension with upcoming events. It is for this reason suspense is frequently used in thrillers. Of the myriad of thriller films, The Village, directed by M. Night Shyamalan - known for his The Sixth Sense - displays the tension between characters and life’s true values by introducing ordinary characters and an ambiguous antagonist in a secluded setting, which effectively maintains fear throughout the film. The following thesis delves into James Newton Howards’ musical traits through a musical analysis on The Village. James Newton Howard composed music complementing Shyamalan’s thriller film characteristics. It is noteworthy that no research on Howard’s musical traits has been done yet. This thesis will present and investigate how James Newton Howard associated his music with the scenes and events that take place in the film, what kind of techniques he used in his pieces to convey the film’s concepts, how he expressed the music techniques based on the characters’ psychological state and situation, and the fuction behind these techniques. I first inquired into the history on Hollywood’s thrillers, James Newton Howard’s works, the film’s background, and M. Night Shyamalan, the director of these thrillers, and have divided the film’s plot into root, development, climax, and denouement in order to help better understand the overall content. I devised a cue sheet to fathom the reasoning behind the composer’s music utilization, and after examining the data analyzed the music’s fundamental elements and characteristics. Based on the research, the music mirrored the flow of the film by omitting the third note and creating an ambiguous atmosphere which indicates the anxiety and man’s fear of death felt through the unknown and uncanny being. And by using minor second and the chromatic scale, the music expressed the characters’ emotions and mentality. Furthermore, by using various acoustic instruments together with special styles and extreme articulations and tones, the music manages to produce a synthesizer-like sound. Finally, the use of music techniques to express ambience effects was exceptional. I conclude in hopes that this study can contribute to a systematic and active study of James Newton Howard’s film music and abilities, largely his through scenario analysis and remarkable modern sound based on classical harmony.
