Abstract
Focusing on the images represented in the cover page illustration of 『半島の光』(Chosun Union of Financial Associations, 1941~1944) published in the early years of 1940’s, this thesis aims to specifically study the images of Korean people formed and distributed by the colonial authorities. 『半島の光』was a magazine published in the period of the Pacific War(1941~1945) as a part of the colonial policies for information control and propaganda based on the National Mobilization Law. In that wartime, every single value turned subordinate to the nation as situations became exacerbated to the total war which capitalized on massive amount of resources. Consequently, in accordance with the colonial government’s emphasis that the fine arts must exist for the nation and reflect situations of those days, every media including movies, literature, and magazines started to make the images of dedicated subjects for Japanese empire. 『半島の光』published by the Chosun Union of Financial Associations, an interest group for the Japanese Government General of Chosun, was the only magazine for peasants at that time, and a hundred thousand prints were distributed to all around the nation for free. The figure in the cover image was portrayed as if he was smiling happily for his abundant harvest or living a whole-personal life so that the image could allure observers to identify themselves with the figure. Moreover, several titles were written with the illustrations to send strong and obvious messages to Chosun people at that time. These titles can be classified into 2 types. First, ‘銃後の奉公(serving the state in the rear)’ carries the messages emphasizing the increase in food production, ‘愛國班(patriotic group)’ activities, thrift, and the spirit of ‘職役奉公(serving the state through one’s vocation)’ for encouraging economic cooperation from the peninsula during the wartime. And secondly, ‘戰爭記念(celebration of the war)’ includes the propaganda of the Great Asia War and memorial days for soldiers, and praises military feats of the army so that it could romanticize the war of aggression by Japan. Adjacent arrangement of the image and the written language was more effective in directly conveying the messages than the publication only with visual elements. The origin of the female image in the rear can date back to the time when fascist states implemented policies to idealize peasants, and that image was widely shared in the countries experiencing the World War II. In addition, the origin of heroically glamorized images of soldiers can be found in neoclassic or romantic arts. The way of depicting the cover figure’s look seems to be based on the style in Japanese magazines. Plus, Jung Hyun-woong, a cover page illustrator, drew many characters in 1930’s, most of which were represented as attractive modern girls with gorgeous fashions, western style looks, and charming poses. In contrast, instead of all these colorful features, the cover of 『半島の光』, the representative works in 1940’s, was filled with images of people who lived a thrifty life and worked hard in their positions according to the wartime situations during that period. These distinctions can be better understood through the comparison with other contemporary magazines, and even 『家庭之友(Friend in the house)』or 『家庭の友(Friend in the house)』, the former versions of 『半島の光』, didn’t include any of those styles. In conclusion, the figures in the cover illustrations of 『半島の光』 symbolize loyalty to policies of the colonial government and are images of the subjects for Japanese empire, which were designed for efficiently mobilizing human and material resources of the peninsula. In other words, through the cover page of 『半島の光』, we can comprehend ideal images of Korean people mandated by the colonial authorities during the Pacific War and take a look at the public perspectives in those days.
