토니 모리슨의 『홈』에 나타난 인종, 공간, 집

Abstract

This thesis aims to explore how Toni Morrison uses her recent novel Home (2012) to show racial problems in American society through description of spaces and the possibility for African Americans to establish their identity by building their own home. Going through spaces in the U.S. and South Korea, black people suffer racial oppression. The spaces and their experience in the spaces reveal a silent history of suffering faced by African Americans in 1950’s. The journey back to home and rebuilding home reclaims the meaning of home for African Americans. The first chapter explores theoretical studies of space and place, and examines space’s relation with place, identity, and race. Historically, African Americans have learnt racial identity by racial oppression in specific spaces ever since Africans came to the American continent on slave ships. The second chapter studies the social problems against African Americans in the middle of the 20th century through their experience both inside and outside the hometown of Frank and Cee. South Korea, big cities in the U.S., and the white doctor’s house, show those spaces are related to African Americans’gender identity, as Frank reveals violently masculinity and Cee’s femininity is destroyed by the white doctor. Also, African Americans realize their social status and class in American society through the spaces. The third chapter reclaims African American space and the South, and then discusses ways that African Americans can recreate relationships, reestablishing their home. Black space can change from traumatized space to space for healing. Although African Americans’ living space has been considered a segregated site, the black community in Lotus shows it can be healing space for the wounded and can offer the possibility of hope in African American space. In conclusion, this thesis argues that Morrison reveals silenced racial problems through the movement of spaces inside and outside America, and emphasizes the importance for African Americans to build their own home and thereby establish their relationship with one another, healing their wounds.;본 논문은 『홈』에 나타나는 공간들을 통해 드러나는 미국사회에서 흑인들이 겪은 문제에 대해 알아보고 여러 공간들을 통해 흑인들이 그들의 정체성과 사회적 위치 및 관계를 형성 혹은 인지하게 된다는 것을 확인한다. 흑인들이 자신들의 공간을 다시 만들어가는 과정을 통해서 그들의 관계를 재정립할 수 있다는 가능성을 확인해보고자 한다. 여러 공간들을 거치며 흑인 인물들은 미국 역사에서 감추어져왔던 흑인들의 고통스러운 이야기를 드러낸다. 프랭크와 씨는 다시 자신들이 살던 마을로 돌아와 그들만의 집을 다시 만들어가며 그들의 관계를 새롭게 정립해나간다. 제 1장에서는 먼저 공간에 대한 연구를 살펴보는데 먼저 공간을 시간·장소·정체성·인종에 연관 지어 알아봄으로써 공간의 의미와 특성을 확인한다. 특히 공간이 흑인들이 인종적 억압을 경험하고 자신들이 백인들과 다르다는 인종적 정체성을 인지하는데 있어 중심적인 역할을 한다는 것을 확인한다. 이에 더해 흑인의 집에 대해 살펴보면서 흑인들에게 있어 집의 의미가 무엇인지 고찰한다. 제 2장에서는 소설에서 모리슨이 흑인들이 겪었던 사회적 문제들을 여러 공간들에 대한 묘사를 통해 어떻게 드러내는지 분석하고 흑인들이 공간과 그 안에서의 경험을 통해 공간이 그들의 젠더적 정체성을 표출·억압시키는 곳이자 그들의 사회적 관계 및 위치를 그들 스스로에게 인식시키는 역할을 한다는 것을 알아본다. 프랭크와 씨는 남부와 그들의 주거 공간인 마을과 집에서 소외감·자신의 열등한 위치 느끼며 그것을 벗어나기 위해 그 밖으로 떠나는데, 프랭크와 씨가 거치는 한국, 미국의 대도시들 그리고 백인 의사의 집 등의 여러 공간들은 흑인들이 겪었던 고통스러운 이야기들을 드러내는 동시에 흑인의 젠더적 정체성과 사회적 관계 및 위치에 관련되어 있다는 것을 알아본다. 제 3장에서는 프랭크와 씨가 자신들이 살던 마을로 다시 돌아와 외부에서 받은 상처를 치유 받고 그들만의 집을 만들어 사는 모습을 통해서 남부와 집의 의미를 재조명한다. 이와 함께 흑인들이 자신들의 공간을 다시 만드는 과정을 통해 그들 사이의 관계를 바꾸어나갈 수 있다는 가능성을 확인해보고자 한다. 이러한 고찰을 통하여 본 논문은 모리슨이 『홈』에서 미국 사회에서 감추어져왔던 흑인들이 겪은 사회적 문제들을 알리고자 했으며 여러 공간을 통해 흑인들의 정체성·사회적 관계 및 위치가 만들어지며 그들로 하여금 인식된다는 것을 알아본다. 본 논문은 이와 더불어 집을 다시 만들어 가는 과정을 통하여 흑인들이 관계를 바꾸어나갈 수 있다는 가능성을 제시하여 흑인들의 공간인 남부와 집을 희망적인 곳으로 재조명하고 있음을 탐구할 것이다.
