Abstract
This study analyzes the Ecofeministic viewpoint found in Ursula K. Le Guin's The Other Wind through an investigation of the intricate relationship between dragons and women. As a master of Fantasy and Science Fiction novels, Le Guin has shown unique interpretations of gender by surpassing its boundaries. The well-known Fantasy series The Earthsea Cycle has gone through a remarkable revision during its thirty years of writing. In the last book of this series, Le Guin illustrates a new understanding of dragons and women. This study underlines this new attempt through the lens of Ecofeminism, one of the latest type of feminism. By a close analysis on dragons and women, this thesis aims to find a newly defined relationship between women, nature and dragons. This study also explores the meaning of dealing gender and the environment in the Fantasy genre. The introduction opens with a coverage of Le Guin's works and her entry to feminism, and its influence on The Earthsea Cycle. It also traces the depiction of dragons and women within the tradition of literature. Mythologies and early novels show a close relationship between the two entities by viewing female dragons as a representation and the goddess of earth. However, an autonomous and active relationship between nature, women and dragons are not to be found. The introduction also deals with an overview of the history of Ecofeminism and its variations in the current era. This part closes with this study's stance within the field of Ecofeminism. The second section deals with dragons and women in regards of species and gender. In the novel dragons are women, and they are also nature. Both entities have been oppressed by the mainstream Hardic male wizards who had erased them from history and defined them as "the Other.󰡓This meets with the arguments of Ecofeminism that men have claimed women and nature by categorizing them as the other and the inferior. The novel also intertwines women and dragons by representing a mix of them. Orm Irian and Tehanu, the two daughters of the dragon Kalessin are an integrated version of the two species. They are examples showing that women and dragons understand each other and share a similar status in the society. By adding the meaning of subversion in the nature of dragons, the novel gives women and nature the possibility to overcome the situation. The third part investigates the wider perspectives of Ecofeminism, which broadens its attention to other types of oppressions. The Kargs in the novel are people living across the eastern borders of the land, cultivating a culture other than the Hardic people. Tenar and Seserakh, the two ladies representing the Kargish people are seen as dragons as the story proceeds. This is a representation of the multicultural aspects of Ecofeminism. Next deals with how Ecofeminism embraces men as part of the green future. The Grove of Roke Knoll is a place where harmony is kept between species, gender, culture, and also is the gateway to a different and ideal world: the kingdom of dragons. The last part of this section discusses the hopeful implications of the novel and the message it delivers to the world we live in. The conclusion examines the power of the fantasy genre as a window to explore the issues of gender and the environment. By creating an alternate universe where the issues of reality are reflected and investigated, the Fantasy genre enables to catch a glimpse of reality which traditional literature may overlook and seeks a positive vision of the future.
