Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the aspects of de-masculinity in Korean plays of the 1990s. Among them, the targets of discussions are limited to the dramas of male playwrights to focus on their reflective aspects of transitions regarding the existing hegemonic masculinity. Until the 1990s, the desirable representation of a man in the Korean society was a strong man acquiring the hegemonic masculinity. However, the internal and external changes that the Korean society faced in the 1990s emasculated the social and political discourses which were the main topics in Korean plays and weakened the influences of once-stable patriarchy ideology, bringing the crisis of masculinity. Thus, male playwrights reached to the point of rejecting and disturbing the existing masculinity by embodying the crisis of masculinity and rethinking the hegemonic masculinity. The age of 1990s as contemporary period was regarded as the contemporary period in the majority of studies, excluded from discussion. In particular, gender-related studies were not sufficient in the field of drama. Nevertheless, considering that the discourse of masculinity crisis appeared in this era not only in the field of drama but also in the society and the crisis started to be actively investigated by male playwrights, it was revealed that the discourse of masculinity in Korean plays was in its embryonic stage in earnest. Therefore, exploring the aspects of de-masculinity in Korean plays in the 1990s is highly significant, since it expands the scope of gender-related studies in Korean plays as classifying the aspects of transitions of masculinity perceived in the contemporary plays. This study classified the types of male characters in Korean plays of the 1990s into patriarch, the unemployed, intellectuals to identify the facets of downfall, ostentation, splitting of masculinity experienced by each type. In Section A in each chapter, the causes and methods of reaction were examined in terms of male subjects with masculinity-threat. In Section B, the relevance of the subjects and the places where the subjects belong and the influences of place change on the masculinity were examined. In Section C, the dramatical symbols utilized to represent the masculinity were analyzed, which investigated how Korean plays were biased to the dualistic gender regime of masculinity/femininity deconstructed the gender binary. Chapter Ⅱ includes how patriarchy male characters who were the dominant figures his families under the patriarchy ideology encountered the downfall of the masculinity and the experience of authority-deconstruction. They caused frictions with their family members as failing in performing the roles of economic providers. In the process of encountering power struggle within the family and threatening the status of a patriarch, there were two responsive trends: they were sometimes deprived of the patriarchy power or escape from the patriarchy power and the roles on their own. Given that they overset and criticized the patriarchy ideology on the one hand and revealed the skepticism on the overthrown masculinity and the desire of recovery, it implied their ambivalent features. Therefore, the place of home which was the domain of relaxation and safety under the order of the patriarchy ideology became the place of fear where the struggles and confrontations occurred for the patriarchy power. Home was transformed from the place of exercising male authority to hand over the power. Family members attempted escapes from the place of home to promote its dissolution. Such downfall of the masculinity was suggested through auditory symbols, which had pessimistic viewpoints with the impossibilities of recovery. Chapter Ⅲ examines that the reality of marginalized men who were degenerated whose right to work in neo-liberalism was deprived from constructing the masculinity. The unemployment of men leads to the loss of economic power, which interrupted the construction of the masculinity established from the alliance and politics in the labor market. It has more defiant aspects since the secure of rights in the labor market is directly related to unemployed men's survival. Men tries to perform the masculinity through physical ostentation or unethical enrollment to the labor market. However, unemployed men's incompetence made no possibility to incorporate into the labor market. Therefore, the neo-liberal labor market wraps up the issue by excluding the whole group and concealing their masculine rebellion. The redundancy men who cannot acquire the places for work and residence consistently became subjected to deportation. The efforts to establish the masculinity expressed in their gestures that produces temporary regaining of masculinity embodies imperfection, since it is the suspension of conflicts rather than the fundamental settlement. In Chapter Ⅳ, the aspects of social maladjustment and the masculinity deconstruction of intellectuals who lost macroscopic discourses were analyzed. The de-masculinity of male intellectuals had close relation with social changes because men who once acquired the hegemony in the past era experienced the degeneration of social status. The values of struggles emasculated by the termination of the socialist discourses rapidly transform the hegemony masculinity. The masculinity of male intellectuals as strugglers was segmented by economic inabilities. The male intellectuals were represented as corrupted intellectuals adapting to the historical changes or the subjects to be disunited to adhere to the identity of the past age. Therefore, male intellectuals were signified as the existences to destroy the new symbolic order, disengaged from the reality or alienated within the imagined space established by their own. A variety of objects appeared in the dramas represented the divisive selves of male intellectuals. It revealed the signs of de-masculinity through the disintegration of the ideals that they pursued. This study explored Korean plays in the 1990s from the gender perspective of ‘de-masculinity’ which was not separately comprehended. Since the plays in the 1990s were not characterized as a single trend due to the influences of post-modernism, they were considerably marginalized in the existing discussions. However, it can be evaluated as a period to understand the gender discourse in Korean plays due to the growth of feminism and the activation of women plays at that time. Particularly, the signs of de-masculinity by male playwrights were significant achievements of Korean plays in the 1990s. The Korean plays in the 1990s crystallized the corrected discourse of masculinity through the multidimensional aspects of male subjects in terms of social classes. Male playwrights continued to re-establish the masculinity, accompanying the reflections on the existing masculinity and critique for neo-liberalism. It functions as an axe to generate new gender norms to publicize the fall of patriarchy ideology and traditional male images in the Korean society and reveal the thoughts for alternative masculinity. Moreover, it can also be interpreted as a resistant movement to reject the obligations to exercise male power, not keep the male power by cultivating and maintaining the masculinity. The male narratives of Korean plays in the 1990s can be assumed to build the degendered male discourses by proceeding identity-deconstruction of male subjects beyond boundaries.
