Abstract
Eugène Ysaÿe was one of the greatest violinists of the 19th and 20th centuries. He is regarded as the violinist of the Belgian School, however, he also inherited the traditions of the Frech school under the influence of Wieniawsky and Vieuxtemps. Although Ysaÿe never formally studied compositions, he composed over sixty works and they are full of harmonic originality. Among them, Six sonatas for solo violin, op.27 were regarded as masterpieces. This study aims to understand his individual and unique composing style through examining diverse notes and documents, mainly concentrating on the studying of E. Ysaÿe ‘s Sonata for Solo Violin op.27, No.2. In addition, the general overviews on Ysaÿe including his musical life and violin techniques in sonata no.2 are also examined in this study. Sonata No.2 consists of four movements. Abrupt changes and contrasts of dynamics and articulations are seen in the whole movements. Ysaÿe used various violin techniques such as pizzcato, doule-triple stopping, marcato and sul ponticello, The first movement uses Prelude in Bach’s Partita No.3 and melody of Dies Irae as the themes. The second movement is played with mute and ended with the melody of Dies Irae. The third movement is the form of variations. The fourth movement uses double-triple stopping techniques to express the fear of death to an extreme.
