Possibilities of the Transnational Spaces in Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient

Abstract

This thesis examines the possibilities of transnational spaces in Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient (1992). By depicting how desert explorers engaged in transnational relationships in the desert and how four injured characters are gathered in an isolated villa, the novel explores the relationship between transnationalism from above and that from below. The purpose of this thesis is to show to what extent national, racial, and geopolitical affiliations affect transnationalism from below as a site of resistance to transnationalism from above in the two spaces in the novel: the desert and the villa. The first chapter overviews the complexity of the notion of transnationalism. The novel experiments with the different kinds of transnationalism: transnationalism from above and transnationalism from below. The former is presented in the work through the war and colonialism while the former is depicted through the way characters engage in transnational relationships, creating transnational communities. The second chapter examines the desert and investigates the way the notion of nation is questioned in the novel and how transnationalism is suggested as a means of breaking through the limitations of prioritizing nations beyond necessity. However, the war and colonialism, the results of the forces of transnationalism from above, are shown to intervene in transnationalism from below. The third chapter investigates the villa and the way transnationalism seems to be suggested as an alternative to the war. However, this space also shows the way in which the results of transnationalism from above, in the form of colonialism and race issues, interferes with the transnational relationship the characters have attained to a certain extent. The final chapter concludes the thesis by suggesting that the novel warns how transnationalism from above can backfire to obstruct transnationalism from below.;본 논문은 마이클 온다체(Michael Ondaatje)의 『영국인 환자』(The English Patient, 1992)에 나타나는 초국가적 공간의 가능성을 검토해 보고자 한다. 사막에서 인물들이 국적과 국경을 초월하여 탐험하고 관계 맺는 모습과 외딴 저택에서 네 명의 상처받은 인물들이 함께 모여 사는 모습을 통해 이 소설에는 ‘위로부터의 초국가주의’ (transnationalism from above)와 ‘아래로부터의 초국가주의’ (transnationalism from below)의 관계를 탐색해 볼 수 있는 여지를 지닌다. 그리하여 본 연구는 국가, 인종, 지정학적 소속감이 이 소설 속에 등장하는 특정 두 공간—사막과 저택—에서의 초국가주의적 가능성에 미치는 영향력의 양상을 살펴보고자 한다. 제1장에서는 본 논문이 이론의 틀로 삼고 있는 초국가주의를 개괄적으로 설명한다. 특히 초국가주의의 두 가지 층위로서의 ‘위로부터의 초국가주의’와 ‘아래로부터의 초국가주의’를 검토한다. 그리하여 전쟁과 식민주의의 양상으로 드러나는 ‘위로부터의 초국가주의’와 개별 인물들 간에 사적 관계에서 발전되는 ‘아래로부터의 초국가주의’의 개념을 살펴본다. 이어지는 2장에서는 국경이 불분명한 사막 공간을 통해 국경에 기반을 둔 국가의 존재와 그 관념을 필요 이상으로 강조하는 담론의 부작용을 살펴보고 그에 대한 돌파구로서 제시되는 초국가주의를 논의한다. 나아가 ‘위로부터의 초국가주의’의 부정적 결과물인 식민주의와 전쟁이 ‘아래로부터의 초국가주의’에 개입함으로써 사막에서의 초국가주의라는 이상적 공간 형성의 가능성이 끝내 무산되는 과정과 그 의의를 분석한다. 제3장에서는 구체적 국가와 현실에서 벗어나 있는 저택 공간을 중심으로 국가를 기반으로 한 담론을 해체하고 극복할 이상으로서의 초국가주의를 살펴본다. 이어서 ‘위로부터의 초국가주의’의 또 다른 산물인 식민주의와 인종 문제가 인물들이 어느 정도 성취한 ‘아래로부터의 초국가’적 관계를 다시금 방해하는 작품 전개 과정을 분석함으로써 초국가주의의 현실적 한계를 논의한다. 제4장에서는 초국가주의의 이상과 한계를 반복적으로 제시하는 온다체의 작법을 분석하면서 초국가주의에 대한 작가의 모호한 태도를 논의한다. 그리하여 오늘날 더욱더 가열되고 있는 초국가주의에 대한 논의에 해답이 아닌 질문을 던지고 있는 『영국인 환자』의 의의를 다시금 살펴본다.
