연극적 요소를 통한 회화의 서사성 연구

Abstract

For an artist, artwork is not only a medium to express his or her thought, but also a process of finding himself or herself. To express one's thought through one’s own artwork, he or she needs time of introspection to face oneself completely. Among various kinds of introspection, I focused on one that occurs at the moment when one awakes from one’s delusion because of unexpected events or situations. Strangeness exerienced in an involuntary situation starts introspection and through enlightenment provided by the process of introspection, he or she gets out of the delusion and sees reality. I went through expansion and objectification of cognition via Plato's 'Allegory of the Cave,' as I studied the process of waking up from delusion and facing oneself completely. Plato mentioned, in his 'Allegory of the Cave,' importance of enlightenment via the story of prisoners who woke up from their delusion to reality once they perceived the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows. As enlightenment is required in the process of expanding one's cognition to seek after truth as explained in 'Allegory of the Cave', in order to face oneself completely, a process of admitting that he or she is an imperfect one who is living in a lot of delusion. Also, in 'Allegory of the Cave' to express meanings that are hard to deliver, a similar imaginary situation was set up and metaphorical description was used. And via this mean of expression, it is proven that, in the process of delivering one's intention, the intention is delivered more easily through metaphorical expression than through direct expression. For this reason, through metaphorical situation setting, I intended to deliver the emotion I experienced in the process of facing myself completely after waking up from delusion. In this process, unverbalizable complex emotion is realized metaphorically. In terms of the process of expressing thoughts, there are various works that have metaphorical narrativity. Among those I sought after those from expressionism pictures to I analyze. Expressionism pictures have a quality of visualizing the values of the artists through symbolic images. I used theatrical factors to realize a picture as a legible work. While an artist express his or her thought as he or she pictorializes it, a play reenacts life of human on a stage. I used the theatrical factors from a play, which express stories of life on the stage, as instrumental factors in process of pictorializing my story to express emotions, which are hard to deliver with words, with a similar situation setting. For this, among theatrical factors, I gave meaning to main actor, supporting actor, and props and set up a similar situation to express the story to in a picture. In a play, each of characters, props, and factors that constitute a play as theatrical factors has its own role. I described the roles and analyzed how it is applied to my own pictures. In terms of materials, cotton cloth in color of ivy and ink stick was chosen to represent a warm atmosphere. As the prisoners in 'Allegory of the Cave' did not intend to but just happened to find the truth, the way I feel about the moment in my past when I just woke up from delusion to reality involuntarily, is calm. Although the reality is painful as the delusion comes off, because the process has the power to change us and improve us, I intended to portrait it in a warm atmosphere. This thesis, focusing on the process of waking up from delusion and facing the truth, studies the visual-perceptual methods that describe roles of theatrical factors used to realize artists's thoughts metaphorically on pictures. ;작가에게 작업은 자기 생각을 표현하는 매개체이기도 하지만, 또한 작가는 그 과정을 통해 자신의 모습을 찾아가기도 한다. 작업을 매개체로 자신의 생각을 표현하기 위해서는 온전히 자신을 마주할 사유의 시간이 필요하다. 본인은 다양한 사유의 방법 중에서 예기치 않은 사건과 상황들로 인해 착각이 깨지는 순간에 발생하는 사유에 집중했다. 비자발적인 상황에서 느끼게 되는 낯설음은 사유를 시작하게 하고, 사유의 과정에서 얻은 깨달음을 통해서 착각 속에서 벗어나 현실을 보게 된다. 착각을 깨고 온전히 자신을 마주하는 과정에 대해 연구하며 플라톤의 ‘동굴 비유’를 통해 인식의 확대와 객관화에 대해 살펴보았다. 플라톤은 '동굴 비유'에서 그림자만 보다가 실제사물을 본 후 허상에서 벗어나 진리를 보게 되는 죄수를 통해 깨달음의 중요성을 말하였다. 즉, '동굴 비유'에서 설명한 바와 같이 진리를 추구하기 위한 생각의 확장 과정에 깨달음이 필요하듯 온전히 자신을 마주하기 위해선 스스로 많은 착각 속에 살아가는 불완전한 존재임을 받아들이는 과정이 필요하다. 또한 ‘동굴 비유’에서는 전달하기 힘든 의미를 표현하기 위하여 유사한 상황을 만들고 다른 대상을 사용하여 나타낸 은유적 서사의 표현을 사용되었고, 이러한 표현 방법에서는 자신의 생각을 전달하는 과정에서 때론 직접적인 표현보다 비유적으로 표현할 때 더 쉽게 전달됨이 증명된다. 위와 같은 이유에서 본인은 생각과 감정을 비유적 상황설정을 통해, 착각을 깨고 온전한 나를 마주하게 되는 과정에서 느낀 감정을 전달하고자 하였다. 이 과정에서 말로 설명하기 힘든 복합적인 감정이 은유적으로 구현되었다. 자신의 생각을 표현하는 과정에서 은유적으로 서사성을 담은 다양한 작품이 존재하는데 그 중 표현주의 회화에서 찾아 분석하였다. 표현주의 회화는 상징적 이미지를 통해 작가의 가치관을 시각화하는 그림의 형태를 가지고 있다. 본인은 작업을 읽혀지는 그림으로 작업을 구현하기 위해 연극적 요소를 사용하였다. 작가는 자신의 생각을 회화화하여 화면에 표현하는 반면 연극은 인간의 삶의 모습을 무대라는 공간에 재현한다. 삶의 이야기를 무대라는 공간에 표현하고 있는 연극 속에 나타난 연극적 요소들을 본인의 이야기를 회화화하는 과정에 도구적 요소로 사용하여 특정 단어로 나타내기 힘든 감정을 상황으로 묘사하였다. 이를 위해 연극적 요소 중 주인공, 조연, 소도구 등에 의미를 부여하며 상황설정을 통해 이야기를 회화로 표현하였다. 연극에서는 연극적 요소로서의 등장인물과 소도구와 연극을 구성하는 요소들은 각각의 역할이 있다. 그 역할들에 대해 서술하고 또 본인의 회화 속에는 어떻게 적용되었는지 분석하였다. 재료선택에 있어서는 따스한 분위기를 나타내기 위해 미색을 띈 광목과 담한 먹을 선택하였다. '동굴 비유'에서 죄수들이 본인들의 의지로 허상에서 깨어 진리를 찾게 된 것이 아니라 우연한 계기로 진리를 발견하였듯이 비자발적인 의지로 착각에서 나와 깨달음의 과정에 도달하기에 과거의 상황을 돌아보며 느끼는 감정은 담담하다. 착각이 깨지는 과정을 겪으며 느끼는 현실이 비록 고통스럽더라도 그 과정은 우리를 변화시키고 향상시키는 힘을 가지고 있기에 따스한 분위기로 그려내고자 하였다. 본 논문은 착각을 깨고 진실을 마주하는 과정에 주목하게 되었으며, 자신의 사유를 은유적으로 구상하고 회화로 구현하기 위해 사용된 연극적 요소의 역할을 서술하는 시지각적 방법을 연구하였다.
