Abstract
A hospital is a complex which consists of many parts, and has a clear objective to provide medical treatment to patients. Hospital should perform its function for medical treatment and provide healing environment for patients as well. Recently, the trend in hospital design is changing from ever expanding in size and number to patient-oriented environment. However, since there are still tendency to prioritize economic efficiency and functionality, the approach to provide healing environment for patients is required. Since corridor tends to be regarded as a secondary space rather than main space, it has been relatively neglected. However, corridor has multi functions such as a passageway for wide range of subjects, activity space, emergency exit route, etc. It is also a public place where patients and staffs spend most of their time. Therefore in planning ward’s corridor space, both functionality and healing environment should be considered. Therefore, this study aims to improve ward corridors holistically by improving both functional and healing aspects In this study, I have examined the concept and needs for two aspects of corridor’s improvement, healing environmental aspect and functional aspect. In size aspect, planning hospital circulation, staffs’ visibility, size of the cases been analyzed to derive the overall concept and to revise the needs to improve hospitals and corridors. In therapeutic environmental aspect, stress in medical environment and needs for healing has been looked as well as analysis of cases hospitals and present condition of natural light and dayroom were identified The research method is divided into review on reference materials and analytic approach to reference hospital cases. Standard of corridor width, nursing circulation, therapeutic environment, evidence-based design, etc been reviewed on reference materials. Moreover, field examination, design drawing analysis, quantitative-comparing analysis was done in 14 wards of 11 hospitals. As a result, by summing up these, this paper proposes integrated ways to improve corridors space which considers environmental, spatial, and elemental aspects. This study has meaning since it examined integrated improvements by reinvestigating the corridor space, which can be easily ignored, in functional and therapeutic environmental way. The results of this study can be utilized as a basic material for corridor improvement in hospitals.;병원은 여러 부문으로 이루어진 복합체로 환자 치료라는 명확한 목적을 지니는 건물유형이다.
