Abstract
This study analyzes the cognition and experience of musical emotions through a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design. The aim of the study is to investigate characteristics of each of two groups through specific emotion inducing music. The basic emotions induced by music were categorized into happiness, sadness, anger, and fear, with an explanatory research question set to explore how the variables, along with recognition and experience of musically induced emotions affected adults with and without visual impairment. A total of 120 participants (60 visually impaired and 60 with normal vision) participated in examining the research question. A self-reported music emotion evaluation scale, consisting of multiple objective choice items, was used for analysis. The music emotion experience interview included 30 participants (15 visually impaired and 15 typical vision) and showed more in-depth data through verbal interviews and was consecutively evaluated through inductive analysis. The results were as follows. Regarding to cognition of music emotion, firstly, the visually impaired and those with normal vision showed high congruence in music emotion recognition, showing no difference between the two groups. Secondly, the visually impaired showed a significantly higher valence, intensity, arousal and preference in sadness. On the other hand, the scores for happiness, anger and fear were generally low, with the intensity of fear showing the lowest score. Thirdly, in the case of the visually impaired, preference, and valence for those with normal vision, showed to be the main factors affecting emotional examination. Fourthly, differences in emotional recognition in regards to personal variables, gender and degree of disability did not have any effect on emotion recognition and varying results showed for different emotion category, depending on musical expertise and emotional state before hearing the music. Fifthly, based on the music emotion model, there were clear differences between groups for dimensional model of emotion in music and discrete model of emotion in music. In regards to experience of music emotion, firstly, the description of emotional experience showed to be more dependent on the characteristic of the listener rather than the characteristic of the music. Furthermore, the subjective experience shown through interviews played an important part in the process. Secondly, visual directional verbalism was observed with the congenitally blind and the level of verbalism with contextual characteristics was higher in those dependent on learning and media. Thirdly, both groups showed high affective description towards music, especially among the visually impaired. Furthermore, more visual expressions were apparent with those with normal vision, with more sensual (excluding vision) descriptions from the visually impaired. Fourthly, in regards to music components, rhythm was associated with happiness, tonal components for sadness, and timbre of instruments for fear and anger. This indicates that certain characteristics of music can induce a specific emotion. Fifthly, in regards to non-musical elements, the visually impaired showed a high level of situational depiction, whereas episodic memory was higher among those with normal vision. We can assume that due to visual impairment, the level of episodic memory is limited for the visually impaired. The synthetic conclusion that has been complementarily construed by using sequentially quantitative, qualitative methods to musical emotion recognition and experience are as follows. First, discrete model of emotion in music asserts that the emotion category classified as basic emotion has a universal characteristic of leading a certain emotion without getting affected by visual impairment. Second, in the dimensional model of emotion in music, there is a difference in musical emotion between the visually impaired and those with normal vision, and especially sadness arisen from visual impairment shows most clearly the characteristic of musical emotion. However, as sadness induced from music includes aesthetic impressions, there needs to be a specific strategy to change into emotional compensation through music. Third, the visually impaired uses compensative function in music emotion description by using other senses than vision or by using affective expressions to express the emotion that those with normal vision sense visually. Fourth, the visually oriented verbalism can be expressed in the musical situation where an experience to the same level as those with normal vision is possible, and is frequently used as means of communication for the visually impaired, based on contextual information acquired naturally in everyday life. Fifth, as the music emotion shows consistent difference irrelevant to visual impairment rather than individual variables such as gender, degree of disability, music expertise, emotional condition right before listening to music, a special music induced emotion supporting program that is more suitable is suggested. Sixth, a music that induces specific emotion shows strong psychoacoustic characteristic compared to other elements expressed from that music, and these elements contribute to arouse particular emotions to the listeners, whether or not there is visual impairment. As a result of examining the emotional recognition and experience between the visually impaired and those with normal vision, meaningful differences were found. It can be construed that constraint of visual experience from visual impairment also affects emotional recognition and experience. Therefore, it has been verified that a hands-on experience program is needed to enable the visually impaired to experience and express various emotions through music. Furthermore, when implementing music intervention towards the visually impaired, there is a need to understand the sense of negativity associated with music induced sadness, which should be utilized as a strategic emotional resource. When designing a music induced emotion program considering the characteristics of the visually impaired, an approach in the form of a music play to graft situational depiction may be useful. We should consider a development of music excerpts that associate music with imagery, in order to promote the visually impaired to widely communicate in general society. This study has investigated the key aspects of the visually impaired cognition of music induced emotions and experience. Through a mixed method research, this study seeks to provide a foundation in which therapists, clinicians and educators can create effective strategic music emotion tools for treatment, education and development for the visually impaired. In future studies, quantitative researches that combine psycho physiological measures, behaviour observations, etc., with a scientific approach self-report are recommended.
