Dominick Argento 연가곡에서의 음악적 어법

Abstract

도미니크 아르젠토 (Dominick Argento, 1927-2007)는 미국의 현대 작곡가 중 대표적인 인물으로, 특히 20세기 미국 오페라와 예술 가곡 분야에서 뛰어난 업적을 남겼다. 그의 주요 작품으로 14개의 오페라, 19개의 합창 교향곡, 그리고 10개의 연가곡 등이 있다. 오늘날에도 그의 오페라와 예술가곡은 널리 공연되어, 가장 많이 공연되는 작품을 가진 20세기의 작곡가로 손꼽힌다. 예술성과 대중성에서 모두 인정을 받는 아르젠토의 음악성은 시를 이해 할 수 있는 문학적 통찰력과 더해져 가곡분야에서 더욱 빛을 발하였다. 아르젠토는 시가 갖는 언어적인 뉘앙스와 시어의 묘사에 많은 중점을 두어 가곡을 작곡하였는데, 본 논문에서 알아볼 「버지니아 울프의 일기(From the Diary of Virginia Woolf)」역시 시와 음악의 결합을 뛰어나게 보여주는 작품 중 하나이다. 1974년 미네소타(Minnesota)주 세인트 폴(St.Paul)에 자리잡은 슈베르트 클럽(The Schubert Club) 1882년에 생긴 음악단체로, 세계적으로 유명한 연주가들의 독창회를 많이 개최하였다. 이 아르젠토에게 작곡을 의뢰하였고, 아르젠토는 이 연가곡을 위한 가사로 영국의 여류소설가인 버지니아 울프(Virginia Woolf, 1882-1941)의 일기를 선택하였다. 이 연가곡은 메조소프라노 자넷 베이커(Janet Baker)에 의해 성공적으로 연주되었고, 1975년 퓰리쳐(Pulitzer)상을 받음으로서 아르젠토가 국제적인 명성을 얻도록 해준 작품이기도 하다. 이 연가곡을 구성하는 독립적인 8개의 곡들은 운문체가 아닌 산문체의 일기를 가사로 선택함으로써 자유로운 형식을 가지며, 가사의 묘사에 중점을 두고 있다. 아르젠토는 울프의 일기를 가사로 택하여 자신만의 독특한 스타일로 표현 하였고, 더 나아가 각각의 곡들을 유기적인 관계로 묶어 하나의 긴 연가곡을 이루어냈다.;The American composer, Dominick Argento, (1927-2007) is well-known for his exceptional achievements in 20th century American operas and art songs. His major works include 14 operas, 19 chorus symphonies, and 10 song cycles. His operas and art songs are still widely performed, making him the most frequently played 20th century composer. Argento’s works are acclaimed by both critics and public; especially his songs are highly praised for his literary insight. In his songs, Argento emphasizes the poem’s linguistic nuances by depicting the poetic words. The song cycle, <From the Diary of Virginia Woolf> shows remarkable combination of poem and music. The composition of this work originated by a commission request from the Schubert Club in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1974. Argento decided to use the diary of the British writer, Virginia Woolf, (1882-1941), for the lyrics. The completed song cycle was successfully performed by the mezzo-soprano, Janet Baker, the success of which brought Argento international fame. Argento received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1975. The song cycle is consists of eight independent songs; each song’s style is free from convention because of his choice prose, not verse, for lyrics. Argento interpreted Woolf’s diary in his unique style, and composed one long song cycle by organically combining each songs.
