South Korean society is experiencing a rise in the average age of first marriages as well as a rise in the rate of those who have chosen not to marry, henceforth known as non-marriage. The phenomena of non-marriage and late-marriage is recognized as an important social issue. This study will analyze how the social discourse about non-marriage and late-marriage is composed in newspapers, and what content and discursive meaning it has. The positive and negative images and value judgments of non-marriage and late-marriage have an effect on the readers not by delivering bare facts or through a reflection on society, but by creating a 'constructed reality'. In this way non-marriage can be socially accepted or completely isolated and excluded depending on how non-marriage and late-marriage are defined by society. Therefore it is important to analyze which discourse defines non-marriage and late-marriage with a critical unbiased point of view. For proceeding the study, Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo , The Hankyoreh, and The Kyunghyang Shinmun were selected, and articles related to keywords of non-marriage and late-marriage from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 2013 have been collected. Through this process, 344 articles were sampled, and the collected materials were analyzed by the methods of content analysis and discourse analysis for more organized and in depth research. The following is a summary of the results of this study. First, as a result of the discourse analysis of newspaper articles, it was discovered that the structure of Familism regulates and controls non-married and late-married people to include them in the system of marriage and family. Therefore, three major negative discourses have appeared in the newspaper; First, through 'The discourse that fortifies negative prejudice toward the target', those negative discourses were strengthened by exploiting previously existing negative prejudices and biased images of non-married and late-married people in the newspaper. They also fortified the discourse by combining the usage of negative words like 'old bachelor' and 'old maid', as well as giving biased images of those words. Furthermore, they reinforced even more prejudice by define them in articles about accidents or crimes caused by the state of non-marriage. Second, in 'the discourse that make the state of non-marriage and late-marriage out to be a social problem', articles objectify them as the cause of the dissolution and crisis of the family. As it had been treated as a social issue, women were the ones who took the blame and were criticized for the low birth late. Furthermore, the non-marriage and late-marriage phenomenon was not only brought into the low birth rate issue, but was also bore the blame for problems which cause low birth rate, and its effects on the reduced work force, as well as the weakening of national competitiveness. The articles raised a sense of crisis by using extreme and negative words, reinforced by securing objectivity and trust from academic experts as informational sources. They also used the discourse effectively by showing efforts to include non-married and late-married people as a part of marriage through Familism. Third, through 'the negative discourse on the body and health of non-married and late-married people', newspaper articles show how non-marriage and late-marriage have negative health effects, and gain legitimacy by using medical experts as informational sources. This negative discourse makes women feel more scared and panicked by emphasizing the dangers of late childbirth, breast cancer and the health of their future children. It is obvious that there is a discursive strategy to include non-married and late-married people as part of the 'normal family' structure. There is also positive and ostensible discourse in contradiction of non-marriage and late-marriage, behind which lies the strategy of consumer capitalism. First of all, in 'the discourse on individualized responsibility for the future and the urge to prepare for post-retirement', setting up a sense of crisis using financial specialists and their informational sources, it urged citizens to be prepared for old age by purchasing financial products. It seems positive because it could be helpful for those who willing to prepare for their future lives, but it asserts its discursive nature by effectively combining the government's intention to place the burden of elderly care on individuals, and its strategy of promoting consumer capitalism. Secondly, it was possible to find 'discourse which divided groups according to social class of non-married and late-married people by emphasizing the appearance of the 'fabulous single''. According to the strategy of consumer capitalism, news articles only highlighted non-married and late-married people who were confident and had financial capability by using words like 'Gold Miss', 'Gold Mister', and 'Fabulous Single'. It could be considered as a positive value for non-marriage people who were bailed out from the image of negativity and of prejudice, however it contains another issue. For those who could be categorized in the non-marriage and late-marriage groups divided by social class, it possibly brings up feelings of comparative deprivation, and for those 'fabulous singles', it will work as a regulation to maintain that image. Last of all, this research was able to verify the existence of 'discourse with positive messages which fight against main stream discourse', differentiated from previously mentioned positive and negative discourses. As it becomes increasingly more common, non-marriage and late-marriage are becoming accepted as a natural change in family structure; and since a critical point of view is needed if such a phenomenon should become defined as a problematic situation, that change of attitude in the discourse carries a significant meaning. Cross-tabulation analysis was conducted based on the discourse analysis according to differences of time period and the tendency of the media in order to find out how the six types of discourse appeared and how they are distinct from one another. There is big distinction according to time period; In both of the 1990's and the beginning to middle of the 2000's, the discourse that mentioned the phenomena of non-marriage and late-marriage as a social problem needing solving had the highest rate, The period after the year 2007 had the second highest rate. Additionally, discourse in the 1990's that fortified negative prejudice toward non-marriage and late-marriage accounted for the second largest part. Negative discourse about the body and health consistently accounted for the third largest portion from the 1990's to the middle of the 2000's when discourse on low birth rate arose. It is therefore well recognized that negative discourse was proportionally higher in the newspaper. Additionally, discourse highlighting financially capable 'fabulous singles' in the newspaper according to consumer capitalism was most frequent after the year 2007. From a similar context, discourse that urged people to prepare for post-retirement has increasingly influenced consumer capitalism, and it accounted for the largest number of mentions in the time period after 2007. The discourse fighting against that of main stream has also increased slightly over time; This can be seen as the beginning of a positive change. There is a distinction in the type of discourse about non-marriage and late-marriage depending on the media source's tendency toward conservative or liberal views. First of all, discourse that brings up the non-marriage and late-marriage phenomena as a social problem and discourse that highlights fabulous singles represent large portions in both kinds of media. However, there was an obvious distinction in discourses that fight against main stream's discourse, which appeared in the liberal media three times more often than in conservative media. Such a distinction arises based on the tendency of the conservative media to emphasize the value of the traditional family structure while the liberal media tends to call for innovation of the existing order. As a result of the above, this study has several implications. First, it indicates the significance of people finding out about and learning the meaning of non-marriage and late-marriage through social discourse as it is presented in easily encountered mediums such as the newspaper. Secondly, different from existing studies, this study does not set a limitation based on gender or class, and also made a commitment to include male and female examples of non-marriage and late-marriage . Also, this study choose the method of content analysis together with discourse analysis for more objective, in-depth analysis in the way of study. Content analysis suggests more objective results by quantifying, and through discourse analysis, it was possible to find out in-depth discursive significance which is inherent in newspaper articles. In conclusion, analysis on social discourse inherent in newspaper articles about non-marriage and late-marriage helps us to understand the discursive meanings that are not outwardly exposed, and also to keep a more critical point of view.-
