Abstract
This paper examined focusing on elementary education in Republican China, especially the introduction and the development of a teaching method. Although education modernization in China had been carried out sequentially from the late Qing Dynasty, multifarious reforms such as the education policy, system and administration were established from Republican China. Especially through the period of the New Cultural Movement and the 5.4 movement started from 1915, the changeover of an education model from Japan to America had a great influence on modern education in China. As many American education systems and thoughts were introduced, the teaching method received a lot of attention from 1920s with concerns about the means and ways to effectively transmit these systems and policies to education field. This study tried to examine how educators of those days embraced and practiced the Western teaching method through the Chinese Educational Review(『敎育雜誌』), a representative magazine in the educational world of those days. The education modernization had been started from the late Qing Dynasty, and the introduction and the development of a teaching method also had been carried out from this time. In the late Qing Dynasty, under cramming education, teachers taught with authoritarian attitudes and students learned mechanically. However, in Republican China, as the Western 五段敎學法, 自學補導法 and 分團敎學法 considering the psychology and the development of a child were introduced one by one, limitations of a previous teacher-centered teaching method were complemented. Nevertheless, because teachers were still authoritarian and exercised control, in the early years of Republican China, it was still in an experimental stage. After the Xinhai Revolution, the education model changed from Japan to America. According to the introduction of the American education, the modern education was drawn up in earnest from 1920s. One feature of the American education at that time was influence of Dewey, an educator of America, and it was maintained when the American education was introduced in China. Dewey emphasized especially pragmatism and child-centered education in education. As the Dewey’s pragmatism accorded with ‘democracy’ and ‘science’ that China at the time sought, the Dewey’s educational idea was welcomed in China. Also, the elementary education in China accepted the ‘child-centered education’ into which Dewey compiled more systematically ‘education focusing on child’ which many former educators insisted, and advanced rapidly. According to this educational development, a project method based on the Dewey’s educational idea and a teaching method, Dalton plan, were introduced in China. As the project method and the Dalton plan understood learning interest of a child as well as considered creativity and initiative of a child, these made a child plan personally and put it into practice through learning motivation. Accordingly, beyond the scope of the subject which was limitations of previous teaching methods, a child could learn more practically the things applied in real life. In 1920s, discussions about the new teaching method of the elementary education were held actively in the Chinese Educational Review(『敎育雜誌』). Most educators wanted to insert articles that introduce and study the new Western teaching method with wariness, and to propagate the more developed Western teaching method widely. On the other hand, as there was a disjunction because the education in the country whose economical · social situations were quite different was introduced blindly, some educators viewed critically the introduction of the Western teaching method. However, the introduction of the Western education provided opportunities for Chinese educators to broaden their views. Consequently, as the basic education system in 1920s has continued to the present, the teaching method provided opportunities for subsequent educators to find effective educational methods which are appropriate for China, based on the ‘child-centered education’ at this time.
