Sergei Rachmaninoff Piano Sonata No. 2 Op. 36에 대한 고찰

Abstract

19세기 말과 20세기 초반에 걸쳐 활동한 세르게이 라흐마니노프(Sergei Vasilyevith Rachmaninoff, 1873-1943)는 활발한 연주활동을 병행한 피아니스트 겸 작곡가로, 당시 급속하게 변하는 근대음악의 성향보다 19세기 낭만주의적 성향의 음악들을 작곡하였다. 그의 주요 피아노 작품 중 Rachmaninoff Piano Sonata No. 2 in B♭minor, Op. 36 은 그가 작곡가로서 왕성한 활동을 보인 1913년에 작곡되었다. 후기 낭만적 색채를 띄고 있는 이 작품은 서정적인 선율, 극적인 화성진행, 반음계적 선율, 다양한 리듬의 변화, 장대한 규모의 악구, 복잡하지만 짜임새 있는 구조 등의 일반적인 낭만음악의 특징들을 사용함과 동시에 주제의 반복, 주제의 변형된 등장과 동일한 서주의 사용을 통해 곡에 통일성을 부여, 유지하고 있다. 이후, 이 곡은 1931년과 1943년, 두 번에 걸쳐 개정되었는데, 1931년 작곡가 스스로 개정이라는 작업을 통해 과장되거나 중복되어 반복되는 부분들을 삭제하면서 곡의 전체적인 규모가 줄었고 선율, 화성, 리듬, 장식음, 음역대, 아티큘레이션 등 에 있어서 많은 변화가 이루어졌다. 초판이 개정되며 생긴 변화는 길고 복잡한 선율들을 단순한 선율로 바꾸어 음악적인 진행이 자연스럽게 흘러가도록 연결하였고, 무겁고 두꺼운 화음들을 간결하고 매끄럽게 연결되도록 변화시키고 중복되는 음들을 생략하면서 기교적으로는 단순화 되었다. 부점 리듬과 빠른 음형의 16분음표 리듬들은 삭제 하거나 단순하게 변형시킨 리듬으로 바꾸어 긴장감을 완화시키며 곡의 유연함을 느끼게 하였고 장식음과 반주부의 음형을 삭제 하거나 단순한 흐름의 음형을 사용함으로써 멜로디 연결이 명료하게 진행되도록 하였다. 개정판(1931)은 초판(1913)보다 화성이나 리듬이 간소화 되어 연주하기에 초판에 비하여 연주자의 비르투오조 적 요소보다는 음악적 흐름 자체에 집중하여 대중에게 더 친숙하게 다가갈 수 있어 현재도 1931년판이 세 가지의 출판본 중 가장 많이 연주되고 있다. 본 논문은 Rachmaninoff Piano Sonata No. 2 in B♭minor, Op. 36의 3개의 출판본에 대해 먼저 개정판을 분석하여 이 곡이 가지고 있는 특징을 알아본 후, 초판과 개정판을 비교분석하였다. 이 연구를 통해 이 곡이 개정되면서 생긴 변화들과 라흐마니노프의 독창적인 곡 전개 방식을 알 수 있으며, 테크닉적, 음악적인 특징과 작곡기법을 고찰하여 라흐마니노프가 대중에게 다가가려 했던 개정 의도를 파악해 보고자 한다.;Sergei Rachmaninoff, a Romantic composer of 20century Russia, wrote numerous musical works as a composer. As a conductor and pianist he adapted and arranged many pieces for piano. His Piano Sonata no. 2 Op. 36 was initially written in 1913 when he was very active as a composer. Rachmaninoff began to revise it in 1931 diminuting the parts unnecessarily exaggerated or repeated. As a result, the sonata was very much reduced in its length along with many changes on its melodies, harmonies, rhythms, agrements, range and articulations. The sonata has three versions. This paper studies the characteristics and differences of those versions in an effort to better understand it. In particular this paper focuses on what changes had been made in the process of revision. Rachmaninoff changed dragging, complicated melodies into simpler one to help it proceed more naturally. Harmonies with heavy and thick structure were revised into simpler structure to ensure swift connections. Diminution of repeated parts made the sonata more tidy in its entirety. Dotted rhythms and dotted 16th rhythms were either erased or revised into simple notes, which helped to relax the tension while enhancing the flexibility. Same revision was made on agrements and accompaniments. 1931 version is most frequently played than other versions because it is simpler in harmony and more appealing in musical consistency than other versions. While 1913 version is rather bent on formality, 1931 version has more focus on musica flow. Horowitz version has little difference with 1913 version. Rachmaninoff's Piano Sonata no. 2 op. 36 is evidently the product of post Romantic period in view of its melody, harmony, rhythm, and etc. This paper tried to show Rachmaninoff's own method of developing musical theme. It also tried to shed light on his intention for the revision of the sonata in terms of technical skill of playing piano, musical characteristic and composition.
