뮤지컬「몬테 크리스토」의 분석을 통한 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

뮤지컬은 음악, 춤과 드라마, 그밖에도 무대, 의상, 조명등의 여러 가지 장치들이 유기적 결합을 이루면서 만들어지는 종합 무대 예술로서 짧은 역사에 비해 급격히 성장하고 있다. 뮤지컬「몬테 크리스토」(The Count of Monte Cristo)는 2009년 스위스에서 초연되었고 2010년 국내에서 초연되었으며 이후로 우리나라 뮤지컬의 활성화에 기여한 점에는 알렉상드르 뒤마(Alexandre Dumas)의 탄탄한 원작 소설을 바탕으로 한 극적 완성도와 더불어 음악의 영향력이 가장 큰 이유라고 생각하였다. 따라서 뮤지컬「몬테 크리스토」의 발전과정과 작품의 배경을 알아보고 음악적 분석 연구를 통하여 음악이 극에 미치는 영향과 차지하는 역할이 무엇인지 알아보려고 하였다. 특히 등장인물의 심리에 대한 묘사와 극의 전개를 음악적으로 어떻게 표현되었는지 이해를 돕기 위해 뮤지컬「몬테 크리스토」의 전체적인 음악 구성에 대해 연구하였고 주선율과 악기의 사용, 곡의 조성 및 화성, 리듬, 템포, 박자와 더불어 기타 음악적 요소들이 작품 전체에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 분석하여 음악에 나타난 작곡가의 의도를 파악하는데 중점을 두었다. 작곡가 프랭크 와일드혼은 가사의 명확한 전달을 위해 중요한 가사는 긴 음가로 표현하거나 반복하는 방법을 사용하여 관객의 집중을 유도하였고 인물의 감정을 표현하는 극적인 선율은 장면을 더욱 돋보이게 하였다. 악기 구성에서 눈여겨 볼 것은 음역이 제일 넓고 다이나믹의 표현이 용이한 피아노를 비중 있게 사용하여 등장인물의 감정을 전달하였으며 3대의 신디사이져는 하프나 하프시코드, 오르간에서부터 패드 계열의 전자악기까지 다양하게 사용되어 공간과 제작비의 한계를 해결하였으며 전자기타와 전자베이스를 사용하여 다양한 사운드를 표현하였다. 또한 인물의 심리 상태나 감정을 묘사할 때는 조성의 변화뿐만 아니라 리듬과 음정의 변화가 나타나는데 인물의 심리 상태가 불안하거나 비극적인 상황일 경우에는 단조 조성과 반음계나 불협화음이 강조되는 선율 진행을 사용하고 반면에 희망과 같은 긍정적인 감정을 노래할 때는 장조음계와 안정된 협화음정의 진행을 주로 사용하였다. 그밖에 하나의 선율을 다른 곡에서도 반복 사용하여 작품에 전체적인 통일성을 부여하며 일관성을 주고 있다. 뮤지컬「몬테 크리스토」는 2010년 한국 초연 이후로 거듭된 수정을 통하여 작품의 완성도를 기하며 꾸준히 공연되면서 우리나라 뮤지컬의 대중화에 기여하였다. 오랜 창작 기간을 거친 뒤 거듭된 수정과 발전으로 흥행성과 작품성에서 모두 성공을 거둔 뮤지컬「몬테 크리스토」를 외국 창작 뮤지컬의 성공 사례로 보고 이 작품의 연구를 통하여 한국 창작 뮤지컬을 돌아보고 더욱 발전하기를 바란다.;Musical, as a synthetic stage art that organically combines music, dance, drama, costume and lighting has rapidly developed in spite of its short history. Since the musical, "The count of Monte Cristo" premiered in 2009 in Switzerland and in 2010, in Korea, it has contributed to invigorate Korean Musical industry. Among many reasons for its contribution are dramatic brilliance of the plot that is based on the famous novel of the same name, written by Alexandre Dumas and the power of the music, written by Frank Wildhorn. This thesis is to study the process of development of "The count of Monte Cristo" and the influence of the music on entire theatre performance by means of musical analysis. The whole musical construction of "The count of Monte Cristo" is analyzed to show how it is musically expressed to describe characters' psychological status as well as the development of plot. Moreover, to recognize intention of the composer, it is studied to show how the theme, use of musical instruments, tonality, harmony, rhythm, tempo, beat and other musical features influence the whole theatre performance. To draw audiences' attention and to deliver the lyrics clearly to the audiences the composer, Frank Wildhorn uses long notes and method of repetition for important lyrics. It is worth notice that the characters' emotion is delivered through the piano that has the widest range of note and is appropriate to express dynamics. The use of three synthesizers covering the harp, harpsichord, organ and other pad type electric musical instruments solves the problems of space constraint and production cost. The electric guitar and electric bass guitar are used to express diverse sounds. When the character's emotion and psychological status are described there are change of tonality, rhythm and notes. When the character's is in psychologically unstable status or in tragic situation, minor tonality, chromatic scale and discord are used while major tonality and scale and harmony are used when the character has positive emotion such as hope. The musical themes that are repeated constantly through entire performance give coherence to the work. The musical "The count of Monte Cristo" has been constantly performed and evolved undergoing several changes since 2010 Korean premiere. It has vastly contributed to popularization of Korean musical. By studying the high quality foreign musical which has evolved through constant development and has achieved success both publically and artistically, I hope this study can contribute to the development of original Korean musical.
