쿠사마 야요이(Kusama Yayoi)의 후르츠 바스켓(Fruit Basket)연작이 지닌 조형적 특성을 응용한 패션디자인 연구

Abstract

With the improvement of the levels of consumption and cultural life in the contemporary society, the role of fashion gradually expanded its realm. The artistic value of fashion becomes increasingly important beyond its simple functional purpose or a means to express personality. Therefore, the fashion industry must keep up with the diversified life styles and pursue new possibilities continuously, applying a wide range of cultural elements. Thus far, the fine art, music, architecture, fashion, and other genres were crossed over as combined in various ways, developing into a new design. The meeting of the fine art and fashion began from the effort to create a new thing sharing each other’s artistic values. By uniting distinctive motives or expression techniques described in the art works, the borders between the two were extended and the artistic qualities of fashion industry were embodied by suggesting a new design. Yayoi Kusama is one of the most renowned contemporary visual artist creating dynamic and experimental artworks covering a wide range of genres from fine art to film to fashion design to literature, etc. as transcending her conditions of mental illness through art. In view of that, this research analyzed the formal characteristics by dot, line and surface demonstrated in FruitBasket among her paintings and applied those found motives to the fashion design. The purpose of this research is in enhancing the artistic value of fashion and propose a new possibilities of expression by employing the formality of painting in the field of fashion design through the laser cutting technique. The methodologies taken for this research include literature materials pertaining to Yayoi Kusama and the laser cutting technique such as dissertations, books, academic journals, and others as well as empirical materials to manufacture works such as fashion magazines, internet, fashion related sites, etc. To begin with, the context of the artistic practice of Yayoi Kusama and her art world were identified. Through this, the formal qualities demonstrated in her work Fruit Basket were analyzed in relation to dot, line and surface, and then the examples of contemporary fashion designs applying the seformal qualities were studied. In addition, the concept and characteristics of the laser cutting which were used as a principal method for this research were considered, and contemporary fashion design examples applying this laser cutting technique were explored. As a design expression method, the formal qualities drawn from the works of Yayoi Kusama were integrated into the design and the Neoprene material was standardized in order to maximize the laser cutting technique. The total of 6 garments were created with the color contrast between the two colors of yellow and black. Followings are the outcomes concluded based on these research activities concerning the research as to the fashion design applying the formal qualities of Yayoi Kusama’s art works. First, an infinitely appearing sequence of dots and nets were drawn from the works of Yayoi Kusama through the analysis of formal qualities and they were appropriate to apply to clothes in various ways as designed as a new motif. Second, it was verified that the laser cutting technique which was used as the primary method is suitable for maximizing the visual effect in applying the motif as it cuts in great detail and in clear cut. Third, the stark contrast of colors which is also another feature of Yayoi Kusama’s art works was applied to the fashion design as a result of limiting the color palettes to two colors. Fourth, it was easy to form a silhouette of the work by designing with the Neoprene material, and it allowed to represent the artistic element of Yayoi Kusama’s art works for its three dimensionality and thickness. Fifth, through unique design, it was possible to confirm the infinite design possibility of dots and nets patterns which are contemporary senses and able to express the aesthetic values inherent in them. The artworks constantly provide ideas and inspirations for the contemporary fashion design, and enhance artistic value of design, maintaining the complementary relations. However, there were numerous difficulties in articulating the vision of art in practical and wearable manners with regard to materials and expression methods. It is considered that further researches and efforts are needed to converge two disparate fields of art and fashion constantly. In this sense, this research attempts to serve as a means to vitalize the applications of formal qualities of artworks in the fashion design realm with a wide range of expression and practical design development possibilities.;현대사회는 소비생활과 문화생활 수준의 향상으로 인해 패션의 역할은 그 영역이 점점 확대되고 있다. 단순히 기능적인 목적이나 개성을 표현하기 위한 방법을 넘어 의상이 주는 예술적 가치를 중요시하게 되었다. 따라서 패션산업은 소비자의 다양화된 라이프 스타일에 맞춰 변해야 하고 여러 분야의 문화적 요소들을 활용하여 끊임없이 새로운 것을 추구해야 한다. 최근까지 미술, 음악, 건축, 패션 등은 그 경계를 넘나들며 여러 요소들이 어우러져 새로운 디자인개발로 이어지고 있다. 미술과 패션의 만남은 서로가 갖고 있는 예술적 가치를 공유하고 새로운 것을 창조 하려는 노력에서 시작되었다. 예술작품에서 보여지는 표현기법이나 특징적인 모티브를 패션디자인에 접목시켜 그 경계를 확장시켜나가고 새로운 디자인을 제시하여 패션의 예술성을 구체화시켰다. 쿠사마 야요이는 자신이 앓고 있는 정신질환을 예술로 승화시켜 미술, 영화, 패션디자인, 문학 등 매체와 장르를 자유롭게 넘나들며 역동적이고 실험적인 예술작품을 만드는 현대 미술작가이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 이러한 쿠사마 야요이 회화작품 중 후르츠 바스켓(Fruit Basket)에서 보여 지는 조형적 특성을 점, 선, 면, 색채로 분석하여 패션 디자인에 모티브로 활용하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 이를 레이저 컷팅 기법을 통해 디자인하여 패션에 있어서 회화작품의 조형성과 기법을 접목시켜 의상의 예술적 가치를 높이고 새로운 표현 가능성을 제시하고자 하는데 있다. 본 연구의 방법은 쿠사마 야요이와 레이저 컷팅에 관련된 학위논문과 단행본, 학술 연구지 등의 문헌 자료와 작품제작을 위한 패션 전문지와 인터넷, 패션 정보 사이트의 실증적 자료를 토대로 수집 및 분석 하였다. 본 연구의 내용으로는 먼저 쿠사마 야요이 작품의 형성배경과 그 작품세계를 알아보았다. 이를 통해 쿠사마의 후르츠 바스켓(Fruit Basket)연작에서 나타나는 조형적 특성을 점, 선, 면, 색채로 나눠 분석한 후 작품의 조형성이 응용된 현대 패션 사례를 살펴보았다. 또한 본 연구의 주요 기법으로 사용된 레이저 컷팅에 관한 정의와 특징에 대해 고찰하였으며 레이저 컷팅 기법을 응용한 현대 패션 디자인 사례를 알아보았다. 디자인 표현방법으로 쿠사마 야요이의 작품에서 도출해낸 조형적 특성을 모티브로 디자인에 접목시켰으며 레이저 컷팅 기법의 효과를 극대화하기 위해 네오프렌(Neoprene)소재로 통일시켰다. 컬러는 블랙과 옐로우 두 가지로 색채대비 하여 6벌의 작품을 제작 하였다. 이러한 연구 활동을 바탕으로 쿠사마 야요이 작품의 조형적 특성을 응용한 패션디자인에 관한 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 쿠사마 야요이 후르츠 바스켓 연작의 조형적 특성인 작품에서‘점의 반복’,‘원의 반복과 중첩’,‘무한망’은 새로운 모티브로 디자인되어 다양한 방식으로 의상에 응용하기에 적합하였다. 둘째, 사용된 레이저 컷팅 기법은 정교하고 섬세하며 절단면이 깨끗하게 잘려 반복되는 모티브의 시각적 효과를 극대화해 의상에 적용하는데 용이함을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 작품에 사용한 색상을 블랙과 옐로우 두 가지로만 제한하여 적용한 결과 쿠사마 야요이 후르츠 바스켓 연작의 특성중 하나인 강렬한 색의 대비효과를 패션디자인에도 적용할 수 있었다. 넷째, 네오프렌(Neoprene)소재를 디자인에 사용함으로써 작품의 실루엣을 이루는데 용이하였으며 조형적인 입체감과 두께감으로 쿠사마 야요이 작품의 예술적 요소를 의상디자인에 표현할 수 있었다. 다섯째, 작품이 주는 예술적 가치를 패션에 적용함으로 다양한 표현 방법과 실용 가능한 디자인개발 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 예술작품들은 현대 패션디자인에 창의적인 자극과 영감을 주고 디자인의 예술적 가치를 상승시켜 서로 상호보완적 관계를 유지해나가고 있다. 그러나 예술이라는 분야를 디자인적인 측면에서 실용적이고 실제 착용 가능하게 표현하는데 소재나 표현방법에 많은 어려움이 따랐다. 또한 예술과 패션이라는 각기 다른 분야가 지속적으로 융화되기 위해서는 더 많은 연구와 노력이 필요하리라 사료된다. 본 연구를 통해 예술작품의 조형적 특성과 기법이 패션디자인에 접목되어 다양한 표현 가능성과 실질적인 디자인개발에 도구로서 활성화 될 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
