Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the current publication state of gifted children-related books and the perceptions of gifted education among studying material developers at educational publishers. The study thus aimed to raise a need for a shift in the perceptions of individuals in the field of reference book making for students by examining the distribution of printed publications on gifted education and the perceptions of gifted children and gifted education among the developers of studying materials. For those purposes, the investigator selected total 535 books published and searched under the word of gifted at three online bookstores(Kyobo Book Center, Yes 24, and Aladin) in the nation from March to September, 2014. Those books were categorized by the target age, area of publication, year of publication, and topic. In addition, a survey was conducted on the perceptions of gifted education and studying materials related to gifted education with 169 studying material developers at educational publishers. The questionnaire consisted of items on perceptions of gifted education, the concept of gifted children, the goals of gifted education, need for gifted education, the characteristics and content and organization methods of studying materials for gifted children, and perception of development of studying materials for gifted children. Collected data were put to mean, percentage, and frequency analysis with the SPSS 21 program. The analysis results were summarized as follows: First, there was an even distribution of target age of books for gifted children across elementary school students, college(graduate) students, parents, and teachers. Scientific/technical books, the 2nd Master Plan for the Promotion of Gifted and Talented Education(2008~2012), and pedagogy recorded the highest percentage in the area of publication, year of publication, and topic, respectively. As for the fields of publication in each age group, the percentage of studying materials and complete works was high among infants and young children and elementary, middle, and high school students; that of scientific and technical books was high among college(graduate) students; and that of common books was high among parents and teachers. As for the topics of publication in each age group, math recorded the highest percentage among infants and young children and elementary, middle, and high school students, and pedagogy did among college(graduate) students and also parents and teachers. Second, most of studying material developers heard of gifted education. Many of them obtained information from education-related articles(newspaper, magazine, and Internet articles). A good percentage of them answered that they had no good idea of content of gifted education and said that it would be the most appropriate to start gifted education at the age of 6~11(elementary school years). They also said that gifted children were those who demonstrated superior talents in certain fields and that the goal of gifted education was to develop their talents. Most of the respondents agreed upon a need for gifted education, and the most cited reason was personal self-realization through the development of potential abilities. Third, gifted education-related studying materials that studying material developers came across were concentrated in the subjects of math and science. They defined studying materials for gifted children as materials to help children cultivate their creative thinking skills and do practice with teaching and learning materials for themselves. According to them, studying materials for gifted children should be organized in a way to induce children to do in-depth thinking in many different methods and have first-hand experiences with using, making, and feeling things with no fixed selection of creative thinking, integration of real life-related subjects, reinforcement by the topics, and profound content. Most of them had no experience of developing studying materials for gifted children. When they did, they consulted workbooks in a similar difficulty level or the materials provided by Ministry of Education. Many of them were negative about participation in the development of studying materials for gifted children and said that it would be the most effective to develop them in cooperation with expert groups. Finally, the highest percentage of them answered pedagogy and knowledge about gifted children and education as means of self-development to develop studying materials for gifted children. Based on those findings, the study reached the following conclusions: First, the findings that there was an even distribution of target age in the publication of books for gifted children and during the 1st and 2nd Master Plan for the Promotion of Gifted has been made active and Talented Education suggest that the activation of gifted education has resulted in active publications of books for gifted children. Since the topics were concentrated in certain areas including math, science, and pedagogy for gifted children, it is required to plan and publish books for gifted children across more diverse areas. Second, studying material developers did not have a high level of knowledge and understanding of gifted education, which calls for in-service job training for them when developing teaching and learning materials on gifted education just like teachers. Finally, they should make efforts to develop studying materials for gifted children fit for the needs and demands of students as well as the profits of publishers and cultivate their abilities and capabilities by obtaining pedagogy and knowledge for gifted children and education. The findings indicate that the publication media play a positive role of supporting public education and have the duty and responsibility of making books required by the times, which implies that studying material developers should base the development of books and studying materials on their right perceptions of gifted education so that gifted education can be activated for the growth of the nation and development of individual potential. Follow-up study needs to conduct a survey on the demands for books gifted children as well as their current publication state and thus on the teaching and learning materials that actual users require. It is also needed to investigate the effects of publishers' cultures and perceptions by comparing and analyzing the perceptions of studying material developers according to the capabilities, visions, and goals of educational publishers. The findings of the study will hopefully serve as basic data to propose directions for the roles of studying material developers to improve gifted education in the nation and for the publication of books and the development of educational programs in relation to gifted education.
