Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the current situation and the children's perception about parent-child play and private education, and to find out the effect of parent-child play and private education on children's happiness. The research questions according to the purpose of the study were as follows. 1. What is the current situation and the children's perception about parent-child play and private education? 2. What influence does it have between parent-child play and the child's happiness, between private education and the child's happiness? The participants were 120 five-year-old children and their parents. Data was collected by using questionnaires for parents and having interviews with children. The results of this study were as follows. First, the amount of time spent on parent-child play was about 52 minutes on weekdays, and about 2-3 hours on weekends. Mothers spent more time on weekdays and Sundays than fathers. Fathers mostly played physical play with their children while mothers mostly played language-play with their children. It was the child who mainly requested to start playing, regardless of the kind of play. In comparison between father and mother, children asked their fathers to play with multimedia utilization more often than to mothers, and asked their mothers to do more music play, math&science play, art play and manipulative play with them more often than to fathers. Generally parents participated passively during parent-child play. While the level of parents' participation was relatively high in language play and physical play, the level of parents' participation was relatively low when it comes to art play, multimedia play, and role play. Fathers most actively participated in physical play and mothers most participated in language play. As for the children's perception about parent-child play, children found it mostly positive, and they thought fathers were more enthusiastic in parent-child play than mothers. Second, in average, children received 2.98 kinds of private education, having 6.25 lessons and spending 4.87 hours per week, paying 241,107 won per month. Despite private education in academic field had numerical superiority, the amount of time and cost spent was larger in the field of music, fine arts or physical education. Children showed a moderate degree of dissatisfaction towards private education. The degree of dissatisfaction children felt in private education was high in the academic field, and low in the field of music, fine arts or physical education. Third, the more the parents spent time doing parent-child play with their children, the more the child's happiness grew. Especially weekday hours of play predicted a significant effect on the happiness of children. Also there was a positive correlation between father's participation in parent-child play and the child's happiness. The child's perception about parent-child play was a meaningful predictor of the child's happiness. And between parent-child playtime and the children’s perception, only the children’s perception about interesting has significant effect on the happiness of the children. Fourth, there was a negative correlation between the amount, time and cost of academic private education and the child's happiness. In particular, the higher the cost was spent in academic private education, the was more unhappy the child was. The degree of dissatisfaction children felt in academic private education was related to children’s unhappiness. Fifth, parent-child play and private education, parent-child weekday hours of play and the children’s perception about private education has significant effect on the happiness of the children. The implications of the study are as follows. Fathers and mothers played different roles in the parent-child play and as they complement each other, both parents should participate in the play with children. And excessive private education was found to be harmful to the happiness of children. Therefore, parent education should emphasize the necessity of both parents participance in parent-child play and the damage that excessive private education can cause. And as the child’s perception influences one's happiness, it should be considered as a top priority in all studies.
