Abstract
The study aimed at exploring the effects of writing extensive reading logs on Korean primary school students' English writing abilities and attitudes towards writing and achievement. Twenty-three students of grade 2 to grade 6 participated in the study, and they were divided into two groups. In order to investigate the possibility of language transfer, one group was set to write reading logs in their first language, Korean; whereas, the other group was required to write them in their second language, English. By comparing the two groups' gains in writing, the study intended to examine if the Korean reading log group's improvement in English writing would be as large as the English reading log group's. Participants took a pre-test and filled out a questionnaire in the first week of the study, and the two experimental groups were identified as the same group in terms of their attitudes towards writing and the treatment. However, the groups' writing abilities were not identical, as the English reading log group had a higher pre-test score, so the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with the pre-test score as a covariate was conducted to control the difference. The subjects were required to read at least one book in a week and to write a summary and reflection on the book out of the classroom. The participants repeated the procedure of reading books and writing reading logs for 10 weeks. A post-test and survey were performed in the 12th week. The results of the present study are as follows. First, both the Korean reading log group and the English reading log group made significant gains on writing test in terms of content and fluency; in contrast, the improvement in language use was not statistically meaningful to either group. Second, the difference of writing abilities between the groups was not statistically significant, though the English reading log group had a higher mean score than the Korean reading log group. However, the English review group outperformed the Korean reading log group regarding the number of words written on the post-test. Third, there was a drop in the English reading log group's attitude toward writing, while the Korean reading log group's attitude toward the efficacy of extensive reading in writing abilities meaningfully improved. Participants' other attitudes toward achievement, however, showed no significant differences in spite of gains. Fourth, the difference of attitudes towards writing and achievement between two experimental groups was not statistically meaningful, but the Korean reading log group made better gains than did the English reading log group. Lastly, three participants of the Korean reading log group who seemed to have similar Korean writing abilities differed on pre- and post-test scores, so it was considered that the relation between Korean and English writing abilities was not meaningful. By analyzing reading logs of two participants in the English reading log group. it was also found that genres and reading levels of books could affect students’writing abilities and that grammatical errors were not corrected through writing extensive reading logs. Besides, it was suggested that writing reading logs provided most participants with opportunities to interact with the reading books by connecting their own lives with the books and expressing their ideas on reading logs. Overall, the experimental result indicates the effects of writing extensive reading logs on students' writing abilities. Unlike the gains in writing abilities, the study does not confirm a great impact of writing extensive reading logs on students' attitudes towards writing and achievement. However, considering the Korean reading log group's gain on the post-survey, the result might have been meaningful if the experiment was conducted for a longer period. In addition, the analysis of the reading logs suggests the relationship between reading and writing, and the significance of selecting appropriate books to read. Based on the findings, it is concluded that writing extensive reading logs would be an effective approach for Korean students to improve L2 writing competence. It is, therefore, recommended that teachers develop a writing instruction based on extensive reading, considering students' English proficiency, guidelines to choose readable books, and enough time to regularly implement the instruction.
