Abstract
; This research studies , a collection of Ned Rorem’s songs (1923- ) focusing on a relation between poem and music. Rorem left over 300 songs with literary sense and musicality about harmonization of poet and music among neo-romanticism tendency to be representative composer of American songs in 20th century. This research used Rorem’s songs collection, which lyrics are poems of English poets, Robert Browning (1812-1889) and John Dryden (1631-1700) and Scotland poems by unknown poets in 16th century, and each song requires high ranges in many parts so that they are good for coloratura soprano. This song was composed in 1953 when Rorem was studying in Paris. Each song has main melodies which continue to develop by constant imitation, transformation, repetition and express French flowing lyricism and simple form. In addition, he composed songs under two strict principles with excellent literary and acute senses considering harmonization of poet and music. His principles are first, to follow natural rhythm and second, never to repeat poetic words which poet didn’t repeat. These principles were strictly kept in . Various rhythms such as syncopation, compound time, irregular time and etc and additional words were used due to natural breathing by reading lyrics and to express contents of poem more effectively, some main words got longer melodies or higher tones to emphasize poetic words. These confirmed that he made his own characteristics and style to use various musical elements and expressed his excellent literary sense and love for poems.
