Abstract
Most listening texts for English listening test are scripted and recorded by the native speaker reading the script. Scripted texts tend to be missing some of the characteristics of realistic spoken language, including hesitation phenomena. It is important to reflect the characteristics of spontaneous speech in the listening text to enhance construct validity of the test. For this reason, semi-scripted text could be considered. Compare to the script method, semi-script method provides more possibility of speaking naturally during the recording process. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of using semi-scripted text and scripted text on English listening comprehension and the perception of Korean high school students on different text types. This study conducted English listening comprehension test on 69 high school students with different text types, and investigated the effect of text type on the result of listening test of the test-takers. In addition, the study examined if there is interaction effect between type of listening text and the level of listening competence, and analyzed the perception of the test-takers on different listening text types. The results of this study are as follows. First, the text type has not affected the test-takers' listening performance. There was no statistically significant difference in the results of listening test between the group tested with semi-scripted text and the group tested with scripted text. Second, there was no different effect of text types depending on test-takers' listening competence. The result of the comparison on listening test score of high and low level shows that there was no interaction effect between the type of listening text and the level of listening competence. Third, the results from the questionnaire indicated that students in the group with semi-scripted texts felt the test was more difficult and speakers' speech was unnatural. Also test-takers overall tended to show negative attitude towards the idea of using the semi-scripted text in actual listening tests because they were more accustomed to the traditional scripted listening text. The implications of this study are as follows. First, since there was no difference in the result of listening test conducted with different levels of script for listening text, positive washback effect is expected if semi-scripted text is utilized in actual listening test. When listening test based on semi-script is actually conducted, teachers will feel more necessity to utilize authentic listening materials including spontaneous speech and learners will also be motivated to listen and understand them. Second, constant exposure to listening materials including spontaneous speech is necessary because learners feel semi-scripted text is more difficult than scripted text due to their familiarity to scripted text. If teachers use authentic or semi-scripted text in classroom effectively through following easy and simple listening tasks, they can help learners understand authentic language materials more easily. More attempts to use listening texts reflecting the characteristics of spontaneous speech should be made in both the classroom and testing contexts by consistently providing more suitable listening materials and assessing important listening skills at the same time.
