Abstract
The purpose of the study were to investigate in what ways science teachers understood metacognition and its importance for science teaching and learning, and explore to what extent they utilized metacognitive instructional strategies in their science teaching. To achieve the aims, a total of 108 science teachers (60 middle school teachers and 49 high school teachers) participated in the study. The teachers responded to a questionnaire modified from Schraw & Sperling (1994) and Printrich (1991). And eight science teachers voluntarily participated in individual interviews after completing the questionnaire. The results of the study were as follows. First, the science teachers presented higher mean scores in metacognitive knowledge (especially, in the domain of human) than metacognitive skills. However, any statistically significant differences were not found in terms of gender, teaching experience, majors, and grade level they taught. And second, during the interviews, the science teachers presented limited understanding of metacognition and metacognitive instructional strategies. The teachers confessed their lack of knowledge and skills on metacognition and felt difficulties in designing science lessons to facilitate students’ metacognitive thinking. Only a few teachers implemented metacognitive instructional strategies in their teaching, but they tended to focus on using planning and monitoring.
