도시 건물에 반영된 타자로서의 주체

Abstract

In the urban category, in which innumerable relationships are formed, a human forms relations with other objects in diverse ways. The endlessly-changing city, as the symbolic existence, is perceived as a variable space which does interaction fluidly according to its flow rather than a place which is fixedly maintained. With the internal existence composing a city forming the correlation, such an urban characteristic shows the possibility that such a characteristic could be exposed differently according to the correlation. As a social being, a human's identity cannot be thought away from relations, and a human's identity is formed while having a relationship with diverse objects outside other than being formed in oneself on one's own. Contrary to R. Descartes' ontology which discovers truth of existence from one's own internal side by thinking for oneself, Emmanuel Levinas puts more emphasis on the importance of the existence method of building a relationship than existence itself. As the main entity that comes to be exposed by entering into a relationship, 'Hyphostase' is the concept of being placed on behalf of me, and the 'hyphostase' helps understand the other's existence which is exposed differently depending on a relationship. However, the existence, which forms infinitely in the relationship, is difficult to define as a specific noun, and the existence comes to have a subjective judgment including one's own experience. Maurice Merleau-Ponty gives a comment that an object cannot be perceived by being separated from the main entity's subjectivity as long as an object is perceived. In other words, it is learned that an object has a meaning by perception, and there could arise an error in a difference and judgment between the perception of an object and an object. In perceiving the existence, an unfamiliar experience is important. This writer's work stemmed from the perception of the existence through an unfamiliar appearance of the other, and visualizes the other's existence method as one cross section of an urban structure. This is the method of looking at the structure as the ontological existence other than an aesthetic object, and giving ‘Person’ to the structure. As the other reflecting an object while having an external relationship, light and the glass of a structure work as factors in making an object look unfamiliar. The urban building consisting of mostly glass, like an living organism having protective coloring, varies in line with the situation, and consequently has an appearance encroaching on an object or situation. This is reflected as the existence of various kinds of situations only with one's substance disappearing due to being assimilated into the relational situation with the other. Contrary to the existence method in which a main entity disappears into urban scape, there is a method of forming an unfamiliar landscape by simultaneously exposing one's original appearance while making a harmony with a different object. Such a method causes the object having a relationship with oneself to be seen as a concomitantly exposed appearance in coexistence with oneself, and therefore, the differently exposed appearance according to an object brings about a confusion about an identity. The method of covering up oneself by veiling oneself between exposing oneself and hiding oneself makes the other look at oneself as an object for curiosity, rather causing the other to re-perceive the existence. Through this research, this study looked into the existence method of the other who transforms differently according to the changing relations, which serves as a momentum to ruminate on the other's existence and meaning. This writer re-perceived the existence through works, and looked at the main entity who becomes the other, which this writer didn't perceive in human relations, through the structure in a city. The perceptual change over the other, who has been identified with me, brought about a change in relations, with the newness about difference. Further, this writer is intending to inquire into the developmental possibility towards much better relations by endlessly relating with the other while realizing that new relations form the new existence. ;수많은 관계를 형성하고 있는 도시의 범주 안에서 인간은 다른 대상과 다양한 방식으로 관계를 형성해나간다. 끊임없이 변화하는 도시는 상징적인 존재로 고정적으로 유지되는 장소라기보다는 흐름에 따라 유동적으로 상호작용하는 가변적인 공간으로 인식된다. 이러한 도시의 특성은 도시를 구성하고 있는 내부의 존재가 상관관계를 이루면서 관계에 따라 다르게 드러날 수 있음을 보여준다. 사회적 존재로서 개인의 정체성은 관계를 벗어나서 생각할 수 없으며, 자신 안에서 스스로 형성되는 것이 아닌 외부의 다양한 대상과 관계하며 형성된다. 스스로 사유함으로써 자신의 내면으로부터 존재의 진리를 발견하는 데카르트(R. Descartes)의 존재론에 반하여, 레비나스(Emmanuel Levinas)는 존재 그 자체보다 관계 맺는 존재 방식의 중요성을 강조한다. 관계를 형성함으로써 드러나게 되는 주체로써 ‘이포스타즈(hyphostase)’는 나를 대신해 자리하고 있는 개념으로, 관계에 따라 다르게 드러나는 타자의 존재에 대한 이해를 돕는다. 하지만 관계 안에서 무한히 형성되는 존재는 특정한 명사로 정의내리기 어려우며 자신의 경험을 비롯하여 주관적으로 판단하게 된다. 메를로-퐁티(Maurice Merleau-Ponty)는 대상은 인식되는 한에서 주체의 주관으로부터 분리되어 인식될 수 없음을 언급한다. 즉, 대상은 의식에 의해 의미를 지니고, 대상과 대상을 인식하는 것 사이에서 차이와 판단의 오류가 발생할 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 존재를 인식함에 있어 낯선 경험은 중요하다. 본인의 작업은 친숙한 관계에서 드러나는 타자의 낯선 모습을 통한 존재의 인식으로부터 비롯되었으며, 타자의 존재방식을 도시 건물의 한 단면으로 시각화한다. 이는 건물을 미학적 대상이 아닌 존재론적 대상으로 바라보고, 건물에 인격성을 부여하는 방식이다. 외부와 관계하며 대상을 반영하는 타자로써 빛과 건물의 유리는 대상을 낯설게 드러내고 인식하도록 하는 요소로서 작용한다. 대부분 유리로 되어 있는 도시의 건물은 보호색을 가진 생명체처럼 상황에 맞게 변화되어 대상이나 상황으로 잠식하는 모습이다. 이는 다른 사람과의 관계적 상황에 동화되어 자신의 실체는 사라지고 갖가지 상황만이 존재하는 것으로 비춰진다. 주체가 하나의 도시 풍경으로 사라지는 존재방식에 반해, 다른 대상과 조화를 이루면서 본래의 모습과 동시에 드러내어 낯선 풍경을 형성하는 방식이 있다. 이러한 방식은 자신에게서 관계하는 대상이 공존하여 함께 드러나는 모습으로 보여지기 때문에, 대상에 따라 다르게 드러나는 모습은 정체성에 대한 혼란을 가져온다. 자신을 드러냄과 숨김 사이에서 스스로를 가림으로써 은폐하는 방식은 다른 이로 하여금 호기심의 대상으로 바라보게 하고 오히려 존재를 재인식하도록 한다. 본 연구를 통해 변화하는 관계에 따라 다르게 변모하는 타자의 존재방식을 살펴봄으로써 타자의 존재와 의미를 반추해보는 계기가 되었다. 본인은 작품을 통해 존재에 대해 재인식하고, 인간관계에서 인식하지 못했던 타자화되는 주체를 도시의 건물을 통해 바라보았다. 나와 동일시되었던 타자에 대한 인식의 변화는 다름에 대한 새로움으로 관계의 변화를 가져왔다. 나아가 새로운 관계는 새로운 존재를 형성한다는 사실을 깨달으면서, 끊임없이 타자와 관계하며 더 나은 관계로의 발전가능성을 모색하고자 한다.
