일상에서 마주하는 사물에 대한 작품표현 연구

Abstract

Nothing is independent in modern society we are living in. Daily issues we deal with every day at first seem to be restricted to the individuals. However, as you try to solve those issues you will find out that they are indeed related to a social structure. The structural problem can hardly be grasped or solved by individuals, which often frustrates those individuals making efforts. Because of this aspect of everyday life that nevertheless excludes an individual from it, standing in the extended line of social structure, we, being unable to be independent, follow the path already paved by the social structure. I took this issue of relation between an individual and social structure as a basis of my argument. The relation between the two social components seems to be intimate, however, one-sided. The purpose of this research is to contemplate how we individuals lead our life independently without being encroached on by the social structure. I hope that we think through the lens of everyday life and build a foothold, on which we can stand by ourselves. I also shed light on the marginalized things to reclaim their status as an independent being. As for the theoretical grounds of the research, I looked into a possibility of understanding contemporary society and culture through the lens of everyday life which was regarded as a private area. I examine the studies previously conducted by Charles Baudelaire and Walter Benjamin who interpreted the society under the light of everydayness around modern European society. Through the method of Micro-history pertaining to Benjamin’s view of history, I reveal that understanding everyday life of an individual is a way to escape from the net of authority, which will lead us to the path to independent thinking. I cast light upon the outer beings defined by the society on the basis of the idea of external concept theorized by Maurice Blanchot and Michel Foucault. This bases on a question of the boundary that defines the inside and the outside in a society. I portrait those outer beings as a main subject and connect them to the inner world. I address that I take a detour to carry out my research that is to connect inside and outside. In the analysis of work, I will look into the process of expanding a perception through fully understanding everyday beings and outer being discussed above. I claim to be the Flâneur to slowly but surely examine the city. I will analyze prompting events I encounter in the process. They are specifically played out through these three projects Useful Objects, Precarious Story:Wallpaper project, and Usable Tree. Amid the subjects of the research, the outside groups are: the recycled materials specifically functioning out of the context, a story of individuals marginalized in the process of redevelopment, and tropical plants abandoned in the city. These projects are carried out by means of meeting the owners of the objects, trading process, collecting stories from the residents, interfering the redevelopment process with the wallpaper we created from the collected stories, gathering resources for tropical plants, and finally sculpting those plants into a shape of wood stick. These three projects share the same process of working to expand our awareness in an attempt to illuminate the structure of society. I reveal those hidden narratives, and as well as the social structure behind them. Taking everyday life as a point of departure, I build a kind of axis around which we can understand the society. And through the thinking process assisted by lived experiences, this research will help us free ourselves from the confined perception, enabling us once again to live as an independent being in the society.;우리가 살아가는 현대사회에서는 어느 것 하나 독립적이지 못하다. 일상에서 마주하는 문제는 그 자체로 독립되어 보이지만, 문제의 해결을 위해 연결된 고리를 따라가다 보면 사회의 구조와 만나게 된다. 구조 차원의 일은 개인의 능력으로 파악하기도, 바꾸기도 어려운 종류의 일이기 때문에 사회구조 앞에서 문제를 해결하려는 개인의 노력은 좌절로 이어지곤 한다. 개인의 일상임에도 불구하고 구조의 연장선에 자리 잡으며, 개인을 소외시키는 삶에서 우리는 스스로 주체가 되지 못하고 구조적 관계망에 놓인 길을 따라 걷게 된다. 연구자는 사회 구조와 개인이 맺고 있는 밀접하지만 일방적인 관계에 대한 문제의식을 바탕으로, 삶의 주체로서 사회구조에 잠식당하지 않고 살아갈 수 있는 방법에 대해 고민하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 고민에 대해 답을 물어가는 시도이며, 주체적 삶을 위한 기반으로 구체적인 일상으로부터 사유하기를 제안한다. 또한, 작업을 통해 구조적 시선에 의해 소외되어 바깥에 머무는 것들에 대해 적극적인 해명을 함으로써, 사회를 살아가는 주체로서의 시선을 회복하려는 시도를 한다. 이를 위한 이론적 토대로서 사적인 영역으로 치부되었던 일상을 통해 동시대 사회문화를 읽어낼 수 있는 가능성을 살펴보았다. 근대 유럽을 중심으로 일상의 작은 요소를 통해 사회를 읽어내었던 샤를 보들레르(Charles Baudelaire)와 발터 벤야민(Walter Benjamin)의 선행연구를 살피며, 벤야민의 역사관과 연결 지을 수 있는 미시사(微視史, Microhistory) 연구방법을 통해 개인의 일상을 이해하는 것이 권력의 망에서 벗어나 독립적으로 사유할 수 있는 길로 연결됨을 밝힌다. 연구자는 모리스 블랑쇼(Maurice Blanchot)와 미셸 푸코(Michel Foucault)의 외부개념을 통해 구조적 시선에 의해 규정된 세계 바깥에 놓인 것들을 작업의 대상으로 조명하며, 이는 규범화된 사회의 내부와 외부를 경계 짓는 잣대에 대한 의심을 바탕으로 한다. 외부에 머무르던 것을 주체로 드러내고 내부와 연결하는 것으로서 작업을 전개하며, 내부와 외부를 연결하는 연구자의 작업을 수행하기 위해 우회로를 이용하고 있음을 밝힌다. ‘작품 표현 및 분석’에서는 앞에서 논의되었던 일상의 것, 외부에 놓인 것을 적극적으로 해석하며 인식을 확장해가는 과정을 연구자의 작업을 통해 살펴보고자 한다. 연구자는 일상에서 일어나는 세밀한 변화를 감지하기 위해 만보객(Flâneur)이 되기를 자처하며 느린 걸음으로 도시를 관찰한다. 이를 통해 연구자에게 하나의 사건으로 다가오는 것들에 대해 파고들어 분석하며, 구체적으로 <유용한 사물>, <흔들리는 이야기 : 벽지프로젝트>, <이용 가능한 나무> 작업으로 전개되었다. 작업의 대상으로서 외부에 해당하는 것은 사물의 ‘사용맥락에서 벗어나 재사용되고 있는 사물’, ‘재개발 과정에서 소외되는 개인의 이야기’, ‘도시에 버려져있는 열대식물’ 이며 현장에서 직접 사물의 소유자를 만나 물물교환을 하는 과정, 거주자들을 만나 수집한 이야기를 벽지로 만들어 재개발 과정에 개입하는 것, 열대식물과 관련된 자료를 모으고 각목형태로 깎는 것을 통해 전개되었다. 세 작업은 일상에서 마주하는 작은 사건을 시작점으로 인식을 확장시켜 사회구조를 파악하는 작업 과정을 공유하고 있으며, 외부로서 가려져있던 이야기들을 작업 안에서 주체로 드러내었다. 일상을 시작점으로 전개한 사유의 과정과 작업은 사회를 이해기 위한 하나의 축을 만드는 일이며, 경험을 통해 쌓아나가는 사고의 전개는 주어진 인식의 틀에서 벗어나 사회를 살아가는 주체로서의 시선을 회복하는 힘이 되어줄 것이다.
