도시 초목(草木)을 통해서 드러나는 인위성과 자연스러움 표현연구

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze how ‘artificialness’ of city turns to ‘naturalness’ by city plants. Since city space occupied by the nature has decreased, this study stressed human beings should respect natural value and live in harmony with nature. Therefore, this paper explored the way city plants recover their ‘naturalness’ in harmony with human and nature by finding self-recovery ability of themselves. Growing trees in spite of pruning and trimming, weeds growing out from the crack of iron structure buildings, and moss covering precast concrete pavers show vitality of city plants. They are growing by accepting and utilizing their given circumstances. This study reflected perspectives of city plants, and recorded how they recover their ‘naturalness’ from ‘artificiality’ of this modern society. For this purpose, ‘thinking like city plants’ was the main methodology of this study. It is not only a method of observation, but also an experience of self-reflection for leading a positive and valuable life. As city plants have will to live their ‘natural’ lives, human beings need to accept circumstances and find ways to survive their lives. In pursuit of ‘naturalness’ and ‘thinking like city plants’ could change our lives in positive ways. This study examined the meaning of ‘naturalness’ and explored the relationship between ‘artificiality’ and ‘naturalness’. Drawing process and expression method of my works show the relationship between ‘artificiality’ and ‘naturalness’. I hope this study could make contributions to human beings of this modern society by suggesting the way to think and live like city plants as a part of nature. ;본 논문은 인간의 개입으로 인한 ‘인위성’이 도시 초목에 의해 ‘자연스러움’으로 회복되는 과정을 발견한 것을 그림으로 기록하고 분석한 것이다. 연구 과정에서 본인은 도시 초목에 대한 관찰을 넘어 도시 초목의 입장에서 사유하게 되었으며, 이러한 사유방법은 긍정적이고 가치 있는 삶에 대한 자기성찰로 연결되는 체험임을 본 논문에 기술하였다. 자연은 태초부터 있어 왔다. 그러나 점차 도시가 개발되면서, 자연의 입지는 축소 되었다. 때문에 인간은 자연과 공동의 유기체로서 생명의 가치에 대한 존중과 조화롭게 살기 위한 방법에 대해 고민해야 하는 위치에 놓여있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 자연과 인간의 조화로운 삶을 위한 해답이 ‘자연스러움’의 회복에 있으며, 도시가 어떻게 ‘자연스러움’을 회복시킬 수 있을지 연구하고자 하였고, 그 연구 과정에서 도시의 초목들이 스스로 회복하는 것을 발견하였다. 초목은 자신이 처한 상황을 수용하고, 주어진 조건을 최대한 활용하여 성장해 나간다. 반복되는 가지치기에도 끊임없이 성장하는 나무들, 철제구조물 사이를 비집고 자라나는 잡초들, 보도블록 틈의 이끼들이 그러하다. 이러한 도시 초목의 스스로 치유하는 과정, 즉 도시 초목이 ‘인위’적인 삶의 터전에서 ‘자연스러움’을 회복해 나가는 과정을 기록한 것이 본인의 작업이다. 그 기록 과정에서 본인은 초목의 입장에서 사유하게 되었다. 도시 초목이 인위적인 상황과 공간 속에서 자연스러움을 향한 생명의지가 있으며, 이 의지는 본인에게 긍정적이고 가치 있는 삶의 태도란 무엇인지 성찰하게 하였다. 살아가면서 상처를 입더라도 초목과 같이 스스로의 삶에 대해 불평하지 않고, 자신의 상황을 직시하고 수용하며 삶을 영위하는 태도가 필요하다. 곧, 스스로 자연과 같이 사유하며 ‘자연스러움’을 추구하는 것이 삶의 태도를 긍정적으로 변화시킬 수 있다는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 ‘자연스러움’의 정의를 살펴보고 개념을 분석하여 ‘인위성’과 ‘자연스러움’의 관계를 서술하였다. 이러한 ‘인위성’과 ‘자연스러움’은 본인의 작품을 통해 드러나며, 작품의 구체적인 제작과정과 함께 표현방법적으로 분석하고 고찰하였다. 이 연구로 현대사회를 살아가는 자연의 일부로서, 사람들도 각박한 도시의 삶을 초목처럼 덤덤하게 스스로 치유해 나가기를 희망한다.
