Abstract
This thesis begins with the thought that life is filled with the incomprehensible and the impossible. Our lives are studded with impossibility, which is an obstacle standing in the way of people who are seeking possibility in their lives. Accordingly, the impossibility could be a form of restraint. Human nature wants to prove itself and seek the veritable goodness; virtues such as happiness, freedom or love. Therefore we always struggle to overcome the impossibility. In the process of that overcoming, we make impressive amounts of outcome, by-product and residue. I see this productive practice as the process of Art. And this thesis is based on the sight. In regards to my life, the impossibility is relevant to a temperamental characteristic called melancholy. The innate melancholy makes me pursuit something that is vague but also unconditional and absolute. Seeking absoluteness provides a remedy in order to control sorrow. Thus melancholy is the basic sense and foundation among all of my works. So first of all, I will explain about the theories of melancholy. The subject in melancholia attempts to hide one’s inner side, and that behaviour makes the subject observe the world outside of itself. Observing such as this makes the subject scholarly invested. Just as medieval ascetics strengthened the belief to walk through sorrow as an religious ascetic penance, my works derived from melancholy concern devotional performance. Art involved with possibility can be contributive as religion, because of the connatural attribute as passion towards life. On the basis of that possibility, I presume that I am an ascetic hence my works are another form of religious rites and prayers. Rites liberate people from being consumed by becoming means to a purpose-oriented contemporary system through momentary outbursts. My ascetic attitude and the way of expressing works contain attributes that of medieval times. The properties of the Middle Ages influence me alongside contemporary pop culture. Consequently, there is an undercurrent of Gothic art aspects within my works. So I will explain several peculiarities of medieval culture and research Gothic under contemporary light. The attitude of mine comes from the thought that even the smallest effort can help make a better universe. My works are endless prayers in this journey from the impossibility to the possibility of seeking absolute truth. The works that I will analyze in these papers are attempts to express impossibility as a form of restraint, thus insisting the value of absoluteness. I will develop the attempts fully in this thesis, followed by checking the past and proceeding the future towards the impossibly-possible world. In the long run, this thesis will be considered as a compass which enables us to find the way.
