순례를 통한 자연의 이미지 모색

Abstract

Emile Zola, who established Naturalism literature, said 'An artwork is observing nature with the passion of human.' Based on his saying, I define art as a result of interpreting the nature by the artists' own knowledge, ideology and habits. Then, which part of nature is captured as a formative image? It starts from the liveliness of the nature, which constantly moves along with its own law and changes as time goes. Humans developed their own civilization while living in nature, and also built their own inner world in the flux of time. And from the religious viewpoint, the nature itself was the absolute truth and art. In Genesis 1:31, it is said "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good." The Bible contains the law of mysterious nature―which the Lord made and protected by himself. Art expresses the beauty of nature with the immediate impression and passion―such as the shining sun, breezing wind, and gently moving leaves. People search for ways to meet nature in our civilized lives, since the artificial beauty is different from nature. We admire the beauty of nature in practically designed skyscrapers which block all light from our view. Nature's generosity relieves us when we witness it. Therefore, this present study concerns the communion with nature in pilgrimage. I experienced the great nature endowed by the Creator, which accompanies with physical and mental pain but finally leads to introspection with curable power. In addition, I calmly put the feeling and emotion into my works as I drained my emotion and looked into it along with the journey. It was how past artists viewed nature that put it into various expressions. Nature is a very emotional place, which wakes new urges for art up by restoring immune five senses and changing emotions positively. Therefore this study discusses the method of the expressions that captures the image of nature through pilgrimage as to emotional changes. This study also tries to infer how the previous artists depicts nature as the artists’emotion changes. In addition, the thesis describes how my work reflects subjective meanings and expressions through the greatness of nature. Finally, the present study tried to find the subjective value of nature―which has been artistic motif―as analyzing the images from the special impressions of nature during the pilgrimage. The research also examines how well the emotional changes influenced by nature’s beautiful, graceful and amazing scenery is expressed in the image of the nature. It's impossible to express the subjective value of nature without any sincere impression from real nature―which is unpredictable but still holds visceral beauty. I seek for the way to develop the spiritual direction and formative skills in my own work, to emphasize with more people through my own expression and emotion from the nature in the pilgrimage.; 자연주의 문학을 확립한 대문호 에밀 졸라는 ‘미술 작품이란 인간의 열정을 통해 자연을 관찰하는 것’이라고 언급하였는데 이를 바탕으로 본인은 예술이란 자연에서부터 시작되어 작가들의 지식과 관념, 습관에 따라 다양하게 해석된 조형물로 풀이해 볼 수 있었다. 그렇다면 자연의 어떤 점이 조형적 이미지로 착상되는 것일까? 그것은 그들만의 고유한 질서에 따라 끊임없이 움직이고, 시간에 따라 변화하는 자연의 생명력에서부터 시작될 것이다. 그 안에서 호흡하고 생활하면서 인간은 오늘날의 인류문명을 발전시켰으며, 시간의 흐름과 계절의 변화에 따라 내면세계 또한 키워나갔다. 자연은 아름다움의 존재로, 종교적으로도 자연이 진리이자 곧 예술이었다. 창세기 1장 31절을 보면 다음과 같이 나와 있다. “하느님께서 보시니 손수 만드신 모든 것이 참 좋았다.” 이렇게 성경에는 하느님께서 직접 만드시고 품으신 자연의 섭리와 오묘함을 담고 있다. 본인은 종교의 신비에 빗대어 눈부신 태양, 따스하게 불어오는 바람, 살랑거리는 나뭇잎, 평범함에서 오는 자연의 찬란함을 즉흥적인 감동과 열정으로 표현하는 방법이 예술이라고 생각한다. 자연이 연출하는 풍경은 인위적인 아름다움과는 다르기에 우리는 자연과 멀어진 삶 속에서 어떻게든 자연을 만날 방법을 모색한다. 햇빛과 시선을 차단하는 높은 빌딩, 실용적으로 디자인된 일률적인 건물 속에서 우리는 자연의 아름다움을 동경한다. 관대한 자연은 어떠한 방법으로든 바라보는 것 그 자체만으로 우리에게 마음의 안정과 휴식을 제공한다. 따라서 순례라는 은혜로운 체험으로 정신적인 쉼을 제공한 자연과의 교감을 다루고자 한다. 때로는 육체적, 정신적 고통을 동반하며 내적 성찰로 치유의 힘을 보여주는 순례를 통해 본인은 하느님께서 주신 자연의 위대함을 몸소 체험하였다. 또한 도보 순례를 통한 자연 안에서 처음에는 속력을 내어 빨리 걸으며 마음속의 감정을 비워내고, 나중에는 천천히 걸으면서 마음속의 감정을 들여다보고, 고요히 그 느낌과 감정을 작업으로 옮겨보았다. 예술가가 자연을 어떻게 인식하느냐에 따라서 자연은 그들의 감성으로 다양하게 표현되어 왔다. 자연은 무뎌진 오감을 회복시키고 감정을 긍정적으로 변화시켜 예술에 대한 새로운 의욕을 갖게끔 일깨워주는 아주 감성적인 장소라고 생각한다. 따라서 순례를 통한 감성적인 변화를 순례지에서 마주한 자연의 이미지로 담아내는 것을 가능케 하는 표현 기법을 연구해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 기존의 작가들이 자연으로부터 어떠한 영향을 받으며 공감하여 자연을 그려냈는지 연결시켜 살펴보고자 한다. 또한 자연의 장엄함을 통해 드러난 작업 속 주관적 의미와 표현법을 본인의 작업과도 비교해 보고자 한다. 마지막으로 본인의 순례를 통해 받은 자연이 주는 특별한 감흥에 의한 이미지를 소재로 제작된 작업을 분석하면서 영원한 예술적 모티브인 자연의 주관적 가치를 찾고자 하였다. 때론 아름답고, 우아하며, 경이로웠던 자연이 주는 풍경 속에서 일어난 내면의 변화가 자연의 이미지를 통해 잘 드러나는지, 적절하게 표현되었는지 살펴보고자 한다. 예측할 수 없고 변덕스럽기도 한 자연이기에 본인은 직접 마주한 본능적인 아름다움, 그 안에서 겪은 감동 없이는 자연에 대한 주관적인 가치가 표현되기 불가능하다고 생각한다. 따라서 본인은 계속해서 은혜로운 순례 길에서 자연을 마주하며 자연을 소재로 작가로서 받은 내재적 감성과 본인만의 표현법으로 사람들과 공감대를 형성할 수 있기를 본 연구를 통해 앞으로 본인의 작업 방향과 형식적인 면에서의 발전 방안을 강구해 보고자 한다.
