A Comparison of the View of Libertinage in “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Untold Scandal”

Abstract

쇼데를로 드 라클로 (Choderlos de Laclos)의 소설 “위험한 관계”는 성적 방족과 방탕을 주제로 한 내용 때문에 1782년 처음 출판되었을 때부터 불미스러운 글로 알려지게 되었다. 하지만 유혹과 복수와 같은 주제는 풍부한 예술적 영감의 원천이 되어 왔고, 이 소설은 이미 여러 번 영화로 만들어졌다. 본 연구는 “위험한 관계”를 각색한 영화들 중에서 스티븐 프리어즈 감독의 영화 <위험한 관계>와 이재용 감독의 영화 <스캔들–조선남녀상열지사>를 연구 대상으로 하였다. 두 영화 모두 18세기를 시대적 배경으로 하고 있으나 하나는 프랑스, 다른 하나는 조선을 공간적 배경으로 하고 있다. 영화 <스캔들–조선남녀상열지사>는 서양문화권이 아닌 나라를 배경으로 하여 각색한 첫 번째 영화로서 이전에 만들어진 작품들과 구별된다. 특히, 방탕과 부도덕의 동의어라고 할 수 있는 ‘libertinage (리베르티나주)’는 두 영화의 핵심이 되는 것인데, 이는 엄격한 도덕정신으로 알려진 유교 사회인 조선과 어울리지 않는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 영화 <위험한 관계>와 <스캔들–조선남녀상열지사>에 묘사된 방탕(libertinage)이라는 주제를 영화의 인물들을 통해 인물들의 동기와 관계를 중심으로 비교 분석하였다. 연구 목적은 조선과 프랑스라는 다른 문화적 환경에서 방탕이라는 주제와 방탕의 결과에 대해 어떻게 이해하고 있는지 살펴보고, 이런 문화적 배경이 두 작품의 소설 해석에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 분석하는 것이다. 1장에서 방탕(libertinage)에 대한 정의를 논하고 문학에서 방탕의 의미가 어떻게 변화해 왔는지를 설명하였다. 2장에서는 영화 속 특정한 인물들을 통해서 방탕과 관련된 다양한 테마를 분석하였다. 먼저 메르퇴유(Merteuil) 후작 부인/조씨 부인을 통해 속임수(manipulation)와 위장(dissimulation)이라는 테마를 분석하고자 하였다. 다음으로 발몽(Valmont)/조원이라는 인물이 투르벨(Tourvel) 부인/정씨 부인을 유혹하는 테마를 살펴보고, 마지막으로 방탕이라는 주제와 이야기의 결말에 있어서 사랑과 질투의 영향에 대해서 살펴보고자 하였다. 3장에서는 영화에 묘사된 귀족 계급과 여성관에 초점을 맞춰 18세기 프랑스와 조선의 사회적 배경을 개괄적으로 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 영화 <스캔들–조선남녀상열지사>에서 문화 차이 때문에 조선 사회에 적합하도록 인물의 역할과 관계를 수정하고 인물의 동기 또한 변경하는 작업이 필요했다는 점을 확인할 수 있다. 프랑스와 조선, 두 나라 모두 가부장적 사회였지만 조선에 비해 프랑스에서 여성들이 행동과 이동에 있어 좀 더 자유로웠다. 두 영화를 비교해 보면, 메르퇴유 후작 부인과 조씨 부인이 복수를 하는 이유는 각기 다르게 나타나지만 그들이 그들의 목표를 성취하기 위해 조종하는 다른 인물들과의 관계는 비슷하게 묘사된다. 메르퇴유 후작 부인/조씨 부인과 발몽/조원의 관계는 협력관계이며, 세실(Cécile)/소옥과의 관계는 선생님과 학생의 관계이다. 당스니(Danceny)/인호와의 관계는 주인과 하수인 관계로 나타난다. 한편, 발몽과 조원은 유혹의 방법이 각기 다르다. 발몽은 투르벨 부인의 마음을 모독하고 그의 존재로 그녀를 압도하면서 평화를 흔든다. 반면 조원은 인정받기 위해 정씨 부인에 대한 도발을 계획해야 한다. 결국 사랑과 질투는 게임의 승패를 가르는 요소가 되고 치명적인 결과를 낳는다. 본 연구를 심도 깊은 연구라고는 할 수 없으며, 사회의 일부분에 불과한 귀족 계층에만 초점을 맞췄기 때문에 사회 전체를 이해하기에는 어려움이 있다. 게다가 이 연구에 제시된 여성관은 분석을 뒷받침하기 위한 것이기 때문에 제한적이다. 또한 각 장에서 인물 한 명에만 초점을 맞춰 살펴보았기 때문에 유사한 주제로 다른 인물에 중점을 두어 연구를 하게 되면 다른 결과가 도출될 수도 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금까지 이 영화 두 편을 비교 연구한 자료가 많지 않기 때문에 본 연구는 의미가 있다. 동양에서 소설의 각색이 더 많이 이루어지고 있기 때문에 본 연구는 추후의 연구에도 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.;"Les Liaisons Dangereuses," Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ only novel, has been hailed as scandalous since its first publication in 1782 for its libertine content. Seduction and revenge have always been a source of inspiration and the novel has now been adapted multiple times. This research focuses on “Dangerous Liaisons” by Stephen Frears and “Untold Scandal” by E J-yong. Both films are set in the 18th century, but in different countries: France and Chosŏn. “Untold Scandal,” as the first adaptation set in a non Western culture, distinguishes itself from the previous films. Indeed, libertinage, which is synonym with debauchery and immorality, is at the core of the story and seems at odds with the Confucian society of Chosŏn, known for its strict morals. This research will analyze libertinage as portrayed in “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Untold Scandal,” through the characters, their motivations and their relations to each other. The purpose of the study is to gain a better understanding of libertinage and its consequences in the cultural environment of France and Chosŏn, and to find out how this environment affected the interpretation of the novel in both films. The first part will give a definition of libertinage and the evolution of its meaning in literature. The second part will analyze themes related to libertinage in the films through particular characters. First, the manipulation and dissimulation side of libertinage, through the character of the Marquise de Merteuil/Lady Cho. Next, the seduction of Madame de Tourvel/Lady Chŏng, through the character of Valmont/Cho-wŏn. Last, the effect of love and jealousy on libertinage, and on the dénouement. The third part will provide an overview of the social background of the 18th century in France and Chosŏn, focused on the aristocracy, and on the view of women, as portrayed in the films. The research showed that because of the cultural difference, adjustments in the characters’ status and relationships were necessary in “Untold Scandal” in order to fit into the society of Chosŏn, which also altered their motivations. First, although both countries have a patriarchal system, women in France have more openly accepted freedom of movement and of action than in Chosŏn. The Marquise de Merteuil and Lady Cho have different motivations for their revenge, but they both maintain similar relationships with the other characters, whom they manipulate to achieve their goals: partnership with Valmont/Cho-wŏn, teacher/pupil with Cecile/So-ok and master/pawn with Danceny/In-ho. Also, Valmont and Cho-wŏn have different approaches in their seduction. Valmont invades Madame de Tourvel’s mind and overwhelms her with his presence, leaving her no peace. Cho-wŏn has to organize an attack on Lady Chŏng to be acknowledged. Last, love and jealousy are game breakers and have fatal consequences. This research is not exhaustive. It only focuses on a small part of society, the aristocracy and therefore is not representative of the whole society. Moreover, the view of women presented here is restrictive, as it is meant as a support for the analysis. Therefore, it cannot be accepted as the only view of the women’s condition. Each part only focuses on one character; a study of similar themes emphasizing different characters might yield different results. However, because there aren’t many researches focused on these two particular films, the value of the present research cannot be neglected. As more adaptations of the novel set in the East appear, it may serve as support for further studies.
