문자의 해체를 통한 독백의 시각화 연구

Abstract

우리는 모두 마음속에 ‘말’을 품고 있다. 사랑의 고백을 숨긴다던가, 진실을 숨기고 거짓을 드러낸다던가, 받아들여지지 못할까 두려워 다른 말을 하는 등 진실로 하고자 하는 수많은 말들을 품은 채 살아간다. 사람들은 자신의 생각과 느낌을 표현하는 여러 가지 방법을 가지고 있지만, 주로 ‘말’을 통하여 자신을 드러내고, 인간관계를 맺고 유지하기 위하여 대화를 한다. 하지만 인간관계에 있어서 진실로 말을 하고 안정적인 소통을 유지한다는 것은 결코 쉬운 일은 아니다. 인간관계를 유지해 나가는 것은 이 사회를 살아가는 우리에게 있어서 필수불가결한 것이다. 따라서 우리는 원활한 관계를 위한 바람직한 소통이 필요하며, 만일 소통이 되지 않는다면 그 원인을 파악하여 개선하는 것 역시 중요한 일이 될 것이다. 본 연구는 소통의 문제로 인하여 발화(發話)되지 않은 ‘내면의 말’에 주목하였다. 이를 위해 우선적으로 사회적 분위기 및 문화적 배경과 소통구조와의 관계를 살펴보고, 한국 사회에서의 소통구조의 특징과 여기에서 비롯되는 소통의 문제점도 동시에 알아보았다. 또한 이와 함께 소통으로 야기되는 문제들을 회피하기 위한 한 방편으로 자기침묵을 하게 되는데, 이러한 자기침묵의 이유와 의미에 대해서도 알아보았다. 이를 이론적 배경으로 삼아 본인의 마음속에 품고 있는 말을 시각적으로 표현시키고자 하는 것이 본인의 작품이다. 사람들은 누구나 하고 싶은 말을 다 하면서 살 수 없다. 그렇기 때문에 우리는 자신의 감정을 털어낼 수 있는 다양한 방법들을 가지고 있으며, 본인에게 있어서 그것은 일기쓰기를 통해서 이루어진다. 예술가에게 있어서 일기는 개인적인 기록에만 그치지 않고 이를 자신의 작품으로 승화시키기도 한다. 그 표현 방법 또한 가지각색으로 다양하게 이루어짐으로써 일기가 단순한 기록의 흔적이 아닌 예술가 자신에게도 스스로를 성찰할 수 있는 기반이 되는 것이다. 본인 역시도 단순히 일기를 쓰는 것뿐만이 아니라 그것을 작품으로 표현함으로써 내면의 말이 담겨있는 일기를 재구성한 것이다. 본인은 이러한 일기에 담긴 내면의 말을 형상화하기 위한 방법으로 해체된 문자에 주목하였으며, 본인 작품과 비슷한 맥락으로 문자를 모티브로 삼은 작가인 ‘웬다 구(Wenda Gu)’와 ‘슈빙(Xu Bing)’의 작품들을 연구하여 불가독성의 문자의 다양한 해석의 가능성에 대해 살펴보았다. 또한 이러한 이론적 · 조형적 방법을 연구를 바탕으로 작품 분석에서는 개별적 작품에 사용된 조형적 요소들을 정리하고 어떠한 재료와 표현기법을 사용하였고 어떻게 대상을 시각화하였는지를 설명하였다. 이러한 과정을 통해 본인 작업의 개념적 정립과 더불어 화면에서의 표현에 대한 발전적인 방안을 모색하고자 한다.;We all keep “words” in mind. We make livings by keeping inward words which may hide love confession, may say lies to hide real intentions and may say unintentional things to worry about not being accepted their saying by others. We have various tools to express their thought and feeling, but we expose themselves mainly with words and have conversation to have human relationship. But it is very difficult to say truth and keep a stable communication in human relationship. It must be essential for us to maintain good relationship under the current situation. So the desirable communication is required to keep smooth relationship and communication improvement becomes very important if communication is not interacted properly. This study keeps an eye on the inward words not expressed, resulting from communication problem. In the process of this study I found that the characteristics of communication in specific society is influenced by social environment and cultural background. I’d like to investigate communication problems while I focussed on the characteristics of communication in Korean society. And also I tried to find the grounds of ‘self silencing’ as a way of avoiding issues resulted from communication problems. My work of art is a visual expression of inward words on the basis of theoretical background. I paid attention to the deconstructed characters as a way of visualization of such inner wards, and I studied works of Wenda Gu and Xu Bing whose main motif of works were characters in the same vein with my works, and tried to investigate the possibility of various interpretation of illegible characters. Through a study of such theoretical and formative methodology, I got organized the formative elements used in each work and explained which materials and expressive technique were used and how to visualize such objects I tried to set up concept of my works and to find the advanced way of expression in work through such kind of process of study.
