말(馬)을 통한 자아표현 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 본인의 내면세계와 자아를 투영한 말(馬)을 상징적으로 표현하여 현실 속에서 억제된 본능적·정신적 욕구를 작품을 통해 해소하고 전달하는데 그 목적이 있다. 말(馬)의 일반적인 상징성과 연구자가 재해석한 말(馬)의 상징성을 함께 제시함으로써 연구자의 개인적이고 주관적인 자아를 진정성 있게 표현하고자 한다. 예술은 내면의 깊숙한 곳까지 표현함으로써 무의식의 세계를 현실세계와 연결해주는 매개체 역할을 한다. 예술로 표현된 모든 것은 자신을 표현하는 상징이 되고, 무의식 속에 잠재되어 있던 감성의 표출이 된다. 이러한 예술에 의한 자아표현은 실존적 갈등과 정체성의 혼란을 겪고 있는 인간에게 자신의 정체성을 모색하고 확립하는 기회가 된다. 인간은 사물이나 어떠한 형태에 자기 나름대로의 의미를 부여하여 변형된 상징을 만들어 종교나 예술로 표현하고자 한다. 시대를 불문하고 종교나 예술에서 동물 이미지는 수없이 등장하며 중요한 역할을 하는데 이처럼 동물 상징을 중요시하는 이유는 단순한 상징 때문만은 아니다. 이러한 동물 상징을 통하여 인간생활 가운데서 나오는 본능, 동물적인 성향을 어떻게 잘 조화시키느냐 하는 심리적인 요인 때문에 동물을 소재로 한 예술이 중요시되는 것이다. 연구자는 동물을 통한 상징, 특히 말(馬)을 통해서 내면의 자아를 표현하고자 하였다. 이는 말(馬)의 기질적인 성향, 조형적인 특성, 말이 갖는 상징적 의미들이 연구자가 보여주고자 하는 자아에 대한 모습들과 잘 맞아 떨어지기 때문이다. 연구자는 말(馬)을 통한 자아표현으로 본인의 내면에 숨어있던 본능을 깨우고, 억눌러있던 무의식의 욕구와 갈등의 요소들까지 나타내고자 한다. 따라서 국내외의 문헌 자료를 통해 말(馬)의 전반적인 특성과 상징성을 연구하고 말(馬)을 소재로 하는 작품에서 예술가들이 표현하고자 하는 바를 정리한다. 또한 이러한 이론적 배경을 바탕으로 본인이 재해석한 말(馬)의 상징적 의미와 의인화 된 자아의 모습을 양면적 측면, 강인하고 생동감 있는 조형적 아름다움과 순종적이고 본능을 억누르며 내면의 갈등을 겪는 측면으로 해석하고 표현하고자 한다. 말(馬)을 연구자와 동일시함으로써 과거로부터 억눌러 있었던 연구자의 내면적 자아의 모습을 표출하고, 10점의 작업과정을 거치면서 정체성의 혼란과 사회적 갈등으로부터 억압되어있던 자아를 찾아가는 과정을 보여준다. 말(馬)을 통해 표현된 연구자의 자아가 작품을 통해 관람자들과 교감하고, 나아가 관람자들 또한 현실 사회에서 잃어버린 자아의 모습을 되돌아보는 기회를 가질 수 있기를 바란다.;This study aims to demonstrate how to resolve the researcher's repressed desires by expressing inner world and ego through a horse. The research examines both generic and re-interpreted symbols of a horse to perceptively represent the researcher's personal identity. The art acts as a medium that connects individual's unconscious mind with the real world, since it enables them to express their deep-seated feelings. The ego expression through the art allows people who undergo an existential conflict and an identity crisis to establish their real identities. People have expressed religious beliefs and arts by attaching specific meanings to objects, geometric shapes, or signs. Especially, animal symbols have been innumerably used in the area of religion and art from all time. This is because individuals are apt to more readily represent their instinct and hidden desire via the animal symbolism rather than showing the way he or she is. The researcher focuses on representing the inner world through the symbolism of a horse, because inherent and formative characteristics of it dovetail featly with the inner side that the artist has intended to reveal. Moreover, the researcher integrates herself with a horse to arouse her suppressed feelings and to display unconscious desires and conflicting egos. Therefore, the study examines the generic characteristics and the symbols of a horse and explores how horses have been used in art. Based on this review of literature, the researcher combines herself with the re-interpreted meaning of a horse which is lively and energetic but semi-domestic and submissive to humans simultaneously. The study including ten art works shows how to become true to oneself which was repressed in reality for a long time by identifying the researcher with the horse. The study aims to communicate with readers via the artist's symbolized identity and hopes them to find their true identities by looking back on their lives as well.
